00:00.17 Frank Hmm. 00:00.64 James Welcome back everyone to Merch Conflict, your weekly developer podcast talking about all things in the world of software development. I'm one of your hosts back in the Pacific Northwest. James Montemagno. And with me, the man also in the Pacific Northwest, Miss Frank Greger. How's it going, buddy? 00:14.36 Frank Oh, it's going wonderful, James. Welcome back to America. I know this is your favorite place in the whole world, except for pretty much every other place in the world. But welcome back. And I can't wait to spend the next two hours talking to you about the fourth generation Apple TV. This is going to be exciting. 00:30.84 James There's a new Apple TV? Oh my gosh. 00:33.41 Frank rumors the rumor mill uh hashtag james was right um i said before the iphone announcements i said i was actually looking forward to the new apple tv because i'm due to update 00:45.23 Frank And I actually want to write an Apple TV app. And it's too slow for what I want to do. So I'm waiting for the new one to come out. And you are all like, it's totally not going to happen until October, Frank. You're just going to have to be patient. And I'm not a patient person. But somehow time moves on. And it's almost October. And there's been a bunch of Apple leaks. And one of the Apple leaks is that there will be. 01:08.65 Frank perhaps i mean it's still a leak it's not an announcement but Perhaps. the fourth generation Apple TV 4K. will finally be released. 01:17.11 James I could see you know the thing that Apple... Obviously, you know. They do all their events pretty differently, but they haven't had like a dedicated like home event. Like obviously the home pod hasn't really been refreshed. 01:25.14 Frank Mm hmm. 01:26.27 James The Apple TV hasn't been refreshed. There's been that rumored Apple. sort of home device. that has a screen on it that is a home pod with a screen uh that was like a supposed to be like a siri interface showing you different information kind of like a you could Google home or any, any of the, the, the Alexis ones. 01:43.15 Frank Yeah. 01:45.13 James things like that they're all kind of out there so i am kind of curious because It is a fascinating. and time And I was just. a I was just in one of my apps recently and it was like, Oh, do you want to connect this to Apple home? 01:56.22 James And I was like, yeah, maybe I do, you know? So I could see they could. 01:58.77 Frank Maybe. 01:59.79 James rejuvenate i think it's a big space for them to do a big pretty pretty big push right they added doorbells i added security cameras you know your icloud account now has been storage for that stuff um your Apple TV can do on-device processing of your video footage. 02:13.63 Frank Mm hmm. 02:14.66 James So it can detect animals and people and things like that automatically without having to do it like on the cloud or something sketchy. So they have a lot of opportunities to do something special there. 02:25.44 James ah And you know I think of it because... Like, am I in? uh eufy device does have like a home home base. It's like a home doc type of thing. And that is where I have like ah ah a hard drive in and it does the processing on that device. 02:39.74 James But a lot of folks just have the the blinks or they have like whatever little dingus of the world. And they put that little security camera up and it's just connected to a cloud all the time. They don't have that like. storage device or maybe has just like a sd card in it 02:50.95 Frank Yeah. 02:52.73 James And. Yeah, you could have a bunch of little. Apple TV is sitting around just like doing the processing, storing the data. And and ideally like you'd hook up a little external hard drive up to it. and Boom, you're good to go. That'd be nice. 03:05.77 Frank Oh. there is ample opportunity because we've all been making smart homes which are not smart at all but what they are is controllable so finally there is like a digital computer interface and a unified digital computer interface to control all the little appliances and stuff throughout our house they are so far from smart though like it never knows when you're properly at home and all the like good stuff So I think there is ample opportunity to add intelligence and really make. 03:35.75 Frank progress in the actual smart home world. I don't think it's going to happen too soon. Apple seems to be dragging their feet a tiny bit there. And this is one of those things that like for the rest of humanity, our homes will just be getting smarter. So I don't think anyone feels like a big race to it either. There haven't been any big innovations, but. I've noticed a lot of people talking about um smart siri siri ai like people are actually a little bit excited for siri getting smarter 04:05.49 Frank Every single person that tells me that, I'm like, well, it's not that smart yet. But I hate to break it to you, but there is enthusiasm out there, I'm noticing, at least in my anecdotal evidence, that people want. 04:18.51 Frank more intelligent, this and that. You know, we've all gotten used to chat GPT and talking to AIs that way. We want to... We want that to be a little more pervasive. 04:26.96 James Yeah, it's really. really fascinating because Right now there's the. The Grok bots, there's the OpenAI i just announced their... 04:37.68 James bits or their bites or their little Dots, they're dots, the dots are whatever. 04:41.40 Frank That. 04:42.63 James uh you know and m365 and the co-pilot app there's autopilots that are announced are kind of like these always on like virtual agents Everyone seems to be about agents. 04:50.68 Frank Yeah. 04:52.95 James I saw the cute little open AI demo where you can... You can call your, you can call your dot if you want to on the phone and and have them do stuff. Why not? I don't know. 05:01.28 Frank Yeah. 05:01.68 James like I think that... You know, the the connection bit, the one thing that interested me quite a bit. Uh, in the open ai demo is they're like hey like you know there's 400 connectors for that you're already using in chat gpt and like you could just bring that to your little virtual assistant now and then I thought about it and I was like, well. What if? 05:24.27 James you know your virtual assistant had access to all of your... you know, Apple. You do. 05:30.58 Frank Yeah. 05:30.80 James your your home devices, right? And it could automate different things. It could set things up. It could do these other things like, you know, It's kind of interesting, but. You know, I'm wondering if we can go a little bit further than just like talking to the dingus, like have the dingus do a thing and have it be a little bit more proactive. 05:43.95 Frank Mm-hmm. 05:46.23 James ah You know, yeah I think about like. you know, imagine you were. 05:50.36 James recording you know dvr let's go old school right but imagine like you know we're 10 years back 15 years back this is where i got started in the dvr world but you're you're recording the thing and then you set up all these automations and you say okay like ah record the show and then i'm gonna drop it in this folder and then this folder happens like do this and then you're like you're gonna run some proprietary software that's gonna try to like cut out the commercials then it's gonna put it over here and it's gonna rename it and then oh it's gonna go into the plex and you gotta download the metadata and do this thing right like i ideally your dingus and your little bit pop could like go off and like pragmatically, they try to understand your shows and we've been watching and like knows your history and like this. 05:53.08 Frank Yeah. Yeah. 05:56.74 Frank Hey. 06:09.05 Frank Mhm. 06:22.47 James And it's like, Oh, am I like this? And then to do that. And then it kind of like. do all the things. I don't know if I needed to do all the things, but. 06:28.52 Frank Yeah. 06:29.55 James Yo. They're trying, I guess, to do more than just the chat interface, it seems like, and in the modern days. And I think the Siri people have been wanting to, but I'm wondering if... the sir I haven't updated to iOS 27, so I'm interested in if if you have or not. 06:41.03 Frank Oh. Slow. 06:42.45 James but Like... I... i I feel like what I've heard is everyone seems to be excited because it's going to do more, but then. I haven't heard anyone use it yet. you know. 06:54.47 Frank Because it's still dumb. I don't know how, but it's still dumb. 06:55.99 James Oh. How? That's supposed to be the next gen. 06:58.17 Frank I've been, I don't know. I don't know what they keep doing to it to limit it. 07:03.55 James I want... 07:03.45 Frank I really don't get it. 07:03.94 James i Frank. 07:05.17 Frank Just give me chat GPT. Just is that so hard? 07:08.32 James I watched Maddie. We were at NDC Ozzo. I watched Maddie. You Siri AI. Now, I don't think she was on iOS 27. 07:15.02 Frank Uh huh. 07:16.19 James I'm not 100 % sure, but she asked it like a. general question. I don't even know what the question was. 07:20.90 Frank Yeah. 07:21.70 James It was not complicated. 07:23.67 Frank Right. 07:23.79 James And then. It was like, you got to chat GPT this. And then it literally opened a brand new interface. 07:27.61 Frank Yeah. 07:29.46 James I'm like, what is happening? 07:30.11 Frank Yeah. 07:30.38 James I'm like, I've never seen this. I don't even have that. I don't have like, I have i have an iPhone 11, right? 07:33.64 Frank It's the worst integration, yeah. 07:34.79 James And it's just like, oh, I will go just like chat GPT it. And I was like. 07:39.31 Frank ah Yeah. 07:40.40 James What is it doing right now? 07:42.17 Frank I don't know. I need to investigate further because I'm curious what the heck it's doing because the onboard foundation models model did get it. better. it's ah It's a significant improvement over iOS 26. But they seem to keep showing out to chat GPT in a very. um unintegrated, not smooth way. And that basically. breaks the flow and it's not like it's not keeping Cause like, imagine how few words you say to it. 08:09.42 Frank You say a couple sentences and imagine a million token contacts. Like that thing could last a year. Like Siri could have a year of contacts, but. 08:15.52 James yeah 08:18.26 Frank It doesn't. it's not like that And I don't know why they won't do it. I don't know what's holding them back, but it's just not there yet. so Ample opportunity. but I don't know. Apple keeps just fumbling. 08:30.45 Frank with this ball i don' I don't know what the big deal is over there like they keep making their integrations and they keep doing a poor job at them. 08:37.60 James It feels like so on Apple because, you know, Apple, it's like, hey, we got the calendar app. We got the mail app. 08:44.62 Frank Yeah. 08:44.85 James We got the browser. We got all the things that are the default on your phone. It's like when you install Mac OS or or like Windows, like here are the default apps. Right. And just like here, majority people just use those things. 08:54.14 Frank Yeah. 08:56.36 James and yeah you know with all this like amusing all like the muse by meta i see ads every five seconds i see the grok bot ads i'm going to see some dots ads i'm going to see ads about all these people they're like i have these agents that are doing stuff And I mean. 09:03.48 Frank Mm hmm. 09:09.62 James It feels old, but then I guess it's new again because now it's just new interfaces for these agents to to do and connect to different things. But it feels like, yeah, the... the the the foundation of their of the the shortcuts of the knowledge graph of the of the context of the foundational models on device. 09:27.80 James ah So i'm I am curious. like you know, in this newer iOS 27, whatever the foundation model two stuff is with the bigger context. Like maybe it's just not. big enough right to be doing a lot of the stuff and they really don't want to shell out to the private cloud off the device i mean i'm just saying Just saying. 09:46.16 Frank Yeah. I'm just saying I use the foundation model and for general. inquiries it's kind of fine like maybe it hallucinates a bit and by a bit i mean a lot but like at least it gives you an answer pretty dang quickly and all that Apple just seems like they really don't want to write a chatbot. 09:58.48 James Yeah. 10:02.57 Frank Like they're putting, when you install the 27 version of iOS and macOS. Siri is getting jammed into every little text box. You can't click on a text box without like a stupid overlay coming up and being like, would you like Siri to write here? You're like, no, Siri, I'd like you to get out of the way so I can actually use this user interface that's in front of me. like It's really poorly integrated. Like in the mail app, there's summarize buttons everywhere. i'm like 10:29.34 Frank Aren't you smart enough to see the email I'm looking at right now is literally one sentence long. I would love to see what your summary of this one sentence is, but I'm not clicking that button to find out what your summary is. And then they have like an always on grammar corrector. 10:45.47 Frank Apple, no, no. Your grammar corrector is terrible and it keeps everything you type in. It tries to rewrite, especially when you're doing like technical writing. 10:57.00 Frank Like it doesn't understand technical hyphenation. 10:57.50 James Hmm. 10:59.27 Frank It doesn't understand any of our acronyms, any of that kind of stuff. So they seem to like... There seems to be a mandate in Apple to like integrate Syrian intelligence into everything. 11:10.61 Frank except the important part that we want which is the stupid chat interface like OpenAI is OpenAI today because of ChatGPT. 11:15.07 James yeah 11:19.41 Frank Don't kid yourselves. like It's ChatGPT. And as programmers, we live in this little agents bubble, but as chat GPT and like Apple just refuses to create. 11:26.05 James Oh yeah. 11:28.70 Frank ChatGPT for iOS. 11:29.55 James Well, hey. I mean, it's the chat interface is what we did for Google forever, right? And like, you know, if I Google or if I Bing, I get those little AI summary overviews. And if I need to, if I know already, I'm going to need a little bit more. 11:39.23 Frank Yeah. 11:42.19 James detailed information, then it's like, I just open up copilot right away. And I'm like, boom, good to go. Or you're, you open your chat GPT or your Gemini or whatever it is, but all the things I'm just a company man. 11:49.22 Frank Mhm. 11:50.60 James Right. So. 11:51.57 Frank Hehe. 11:51.99 James So i open I open it up and... Like last night, like Millie was was sick and she was throwing up and I was just like, oh my gosh. 11:58.38 Frank Oh. 11:59.15 James And I was like, well, I need to have i need to have a conversation with with someone, right? 11:59.89 Frank Yeah. 12:03.20 James It's one in the morning. 12:03.49 Frank Yeah. 12:05.02 James and what is What is something that has... 12:05.20 Frank Yeah. 12:07.90 James a knowledge graph of the entire internet and will ask me. valid questions get detailed information and follow up and refine that information oh that's a chat bot that can do it you know and it works it totally was a great and millie ended up being fine after like 12:15.90 Frank Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. Oh, good. 12:22.31 James four hours and five throw ups later, but she made it through the night and she did fine today. 12:25.19 Frank home. awesome 12:27.31 James And yeah, sure enough, there was like some threshold that I just kind of kept the chat going, you know, and going back and forth. and Yeah, I find it so odd that they're just... Let's do. have all these random bits. 12:39.44 James around but not just do the thing that Clearly. 12:42.53 Frank Yeah. 12:43.71 James like you look in the app store right like all the number one apps are chat gpt and muse and even like you know like you know people dog on copilot it's like the number like 10 application or whatever in the app store you know what i mean it's like or productivity or whatever it is you know what i mean like all those are in there you know there's different different blends for different things so i find that really um 12:52.20 Frank Yeah. Yeah. 13:02.15 James Interesting that maybe and again, I haven't updated to the latest 27 on ah any of the devices. And I'm wondering if the pendulums are swinging like as 13:08.11 Frank Mm hmm. 13:10.83 James Microsoft, the company I work for, We seem to be like fine tuning the placement of Copilot and AI into your applications. Apple was like, you know what? It's like time for us to finally like jam in and say, you need this everywhere. 13:25.57 James uh and i'm curious you know if that ends up being like the case for it or not what happens 13:25.75 Frank Yeah. 13:30.46 Frank That's a funny point. It really does feel like Microsoft one year ago. That's that's exactly how iOS 27 feels. Yeah, you nailed it. I didn't even think of it that way. Darn. 13:41.73 Frank Make me sad because they're so good at fit and finish usually. So there must just be some crazy mandate going through there. 13:48.13 James Well, and it could be like the the interesting part there is. When Siri was just Siri, now Siri's a bunch of things in a bunch of different places, then that becomes really complicated. you know the And if you... 14:00.22 James just watch there was like this let's learn get up copilot SDK and there's some sessions about the copilot SDK about how Like the team. And. Basically, Microsoft is like standardizing on that agent harness and the Copilot SDK like everywhere and like powers the new app. 14:12.25 Frank Mm-hmm 14:13.81 James It powers a Copilot in an office. it It powers like all sorts of stuff, right? Cowork all all these experiences. And to be like, hey, listen, instead of... 20 different teams building 20 different integrations and then working 20 different ways. 14:28.41 James stand to standardizing like when you're when you're when you're you know When you are... um startup. you are just flinging stuff, right? bu but but up bu but but And that can work and sometimes it can't, right? 14:37.88 Frank Yeah. 14:39.84 James So that's why you see, oh, okay, like there's... this the siri or the copilot or the whatever integration and It looks and doesn't feel. the same necessarily everywhere or just like acts a little bit different everywhere just jammed in everywhere instead of like this here's the cohesive thought process and that takes time to smooth over it's a lot of a b testing right you don't know if someone needs a thing unless you put the thing out into the world and that is that's hard so i i'll give them takes courage takes courage frank 14:55.24 Frank Mm hmm. 14:58.64 Frank Yeah. 15:06.05 Frank ah 15:06.17 James to put it out into the world that's that's what it takes to put that little icon everywhere 15:07.38 Frank Tix. It takes... something to add an automatic grammar checker that you can't turn off. That's Maybe. hubris not courage but i i don't know i understand why they don't want you to turn it off but um 15:17.57 James Yeah. 15:22.74 Frank Come on now. come on and i i think you can turn it off if you turn off spelling correction but spelling correction is what i do need because i'm a terrible typist But I don't want your stupid grammar correction. 15:32.21 James Oh! Yeah, you know, I don't need the grammar. i mean i want Yeah, I... What I do for grammar correction. It's never real time. It's like afterwards, I'm like, I read it and I was like, make this sound not like I'm a butt. 15:44.05 Frank Yeah. Nine more. Nine more. Wait, wait till you get the blue wonderlines and then the blue wonderlines sparkle and turn into something you totally didn't intend before. 15:51.01 James What the... oh 15:54.86 Frank But going back to our previous topic, it was um I was thinking about how all the new models, we're in an AI slowdown, but with that AI slowdown, we're releasing a lot of new models. So a lot of these new models are judged by their... um computer use, which I find interesting because that's one scenario I still haven't gotten into with any of these agents or anything. i I do not want to grant them access to go start playing around on my computer. computer mine, not yours, agents. but i But I was thinking when we were talking about the home IoT stuff, I'm like home use eventually will become like a proper benchmark at some point. 16:31.34 Frank When you can say, hey, when the neighbor's cat comes by, ring every alarm. Or when a postman comes, then send me a message. and you know like home home use. 16:42.27 Frank i'm I'm looking for that to become a new benchmark. 16:44.04 James Oh. Hello. Yeah, like literally we had this family of raccoons on the camera. 16:48.80 Frank Yeah. Right. 16:50.06 James And. i was i was i watched it and there's like a raccoon so i was like oh hey normally raccoon will go through we yeah like these cats in the yard and there's like the raccoons and all of a sudden i saw another raccoon then another raccoon and i was like This is inappropriate. 17:01.39 James Too many raccoons. 17:02.29 Frank Too many. 17:03.02 James and too many they're up to the one raccoon ah not already up to no good 17:04.58 Frank Amen. 17:07.45 James Two raccoons? 17:07.86 Frank Mm hmm. 17:07.98 James I haven't heard of it. Three? Now that is inappropriate. and You cannot have three raccoons. They are going to mess stuff up. So I had to like go into the Eufy app. Had to click on the camera. 17:18.26 James And then I had to hit the alarm. And then I had to hit the slider. 17:20.68 Frank Yeah. 17:21.85 James And and it's really good. Like the the alarm, when it happens, it makes audible sounds. It flashes light. raccoons hate flashing lights so it's the perfect like they hate flashing lights and sounds so it's like boom and it 17:29.68 Frank Is that right good? 17:33.82 James Eh. they went They went a scurrying away. However, to your point. 17:37.39 Frank to your neighbor's house. 17:39.28 James it's your name Now, now there is, for example, I can set and I don't do it. Because... it would just be kind of pure chaos but there is a mode which is like hey if you detect uh a way you're in a way mode and and you detect a human or an animal trigger the alarm it's like well i could just be at night and i could just be taking out the garbage or like it could just be a deer passing through and i don't want to trigger the alarm i'm sleeping but 18:02.21 Frank Right. 18:05.45 James Ideally... That gets fed into an AI. It's like, oh, I see a raccoon. Oh, I see three raccoons. Okay. Like this is inappropriate. We need to like, here's this like. So I would go into the chat bot and I would say, hey, listen. 18:18.31 James Dingus. If you see a family of raccoons and it's... They're me angering around for more than 20 seconds. Fire off the alarm for 30 seconds. And then also send me a push notification. 18:28.07 Frank Yeah. 18:30.16 James Let me know. X, Y, Z, blah, blah, blah, blah. Right. And then stop it and then monitor again. 18:34.02 Frank Mm hmm. 18:35.42 James And like, you know, so you would do that. Like I think in. outlook now for example you can go in and give like the co-pilot like custom instructions for uh like meeting requests you can say hey like if i ever get a meeting from my manager or my skip 18:50.17 James just auto approve that puppy right or like if i have a conflict like try to move it try you could give it different rules basically like that's what i'm kind of thinking about but for home automation like all these different little rules xyz that are in there would be pretty nice to have because like right now we have automations it's like Oh. 19:06.71 James Like I have one for the thermos, smart thermostat. Right. Which is like. Every night at 11. Set everything to 60. 19:12.16 Frank Yeah. 19:13.93 James Like. 19:14.32 Frank Yeah. 19:14.99 James Cool. However... What if I go to bed after 11 and I turn it up a little bit? Doesn't get turned down, does it? Because that automation is not set up. 19:22.75 Frank Yeah. 19:23.69 James So then you set up another automation. It's like, you know what? If it's midnight. also said oh there's one in the morning also said and then like that's no good right like you could have a dingus that's like oh i see that you were watching apple tv oh you're going to bed oh let me turn on like the heat now see this is where it becomes cool right oh i see that the heat in the house 19:29.50 Frank Yeah. 19:42.01 James Like it knows that you're not watching TV. So it's like, oh, okay. Like they're watching TV. There's 20 minutes left. I'm going to like turn on the heat and do this thing. And like, you know, like learn your habits. It seems creepy, but I don't know. It seems okay. If it's doing it on device locally, that's fine. 19:55.67 Frank Or just like debugging, because I have i like you, I have like five automation set up for my one bedroom heater. I don't know why I'm so picky about this one stupid heater, but I could like take a step back and be like, hey, could you review the 8000 things I've set up on this heater and let me know like which ones look dumb to you or whatever. 20:10.99 James Yeah. 20:15.24 Frank you know. more agency stuff, more autonomous stuff without having to dig through 50 different apps and 50 different. things and all that. 20:23.14 James Dead. I was. 20:24.11 Frank That's just where I want to be. 20:25.47 James We talked about this before and. It still doesn't happen how I want it to happen. 20:30.64 Frank you 20:31.28 James Maybe this will be one of these autonomous agents that happen in my near future. But a good example is like. It. We've all been running GitHub Actions forever. 20:41.51 James And we've all... seeing the little notification that's like hey node 20 is deprecated please upgrade To 24. 20:45.54 Frank Oh God. Stop it. no that's triggering trigger warning everyone we're about to talk about node versions on github actions ah Just when do you think your life is in order. GitHub decides to deprecate another node version and you have to update every single action by one V number to get everything updated. 21:06.76 Frank Would it kill them to just run every version of Node? Would it would it really kill them, James? 21:11.89 James ah I think it's a secure. 21:11.56 Frank I'm just asking. For a friend. 21:12.73 James I think it's a security problem. 21:14.84 Frank Security? 21:14.54 James And you know, Microsoft... microsoft 21:17.04 Frank It's a container on a server in a virtual machine. 21:17.54 James Runs on trust. 21:20.90 Frank There's no security involved. 21:24.21 James I don't know. I have to ask the higher aboves, but I don't know. You got to get it. So I went last night when Millie was having her. you know issues i was up and i was like you know what i'm gonna do right now 21:33.42 Frank Yeah. 21:36.32 James Because I'm going to say, hey, I have way too many repos. But not all of them are active. 21:39.48 Frank Yeah. 21:40.26 James So I said, hey, go. Look at my most 50 recent. Active. repos on GitHub that have GitHub actions that are running. And I booted up Luna to her. previous podcast. 21:51.00 James I booted up Luna. GPT-6 Luna. 21:52.91 Frank hi Hi, baby baby Luna. 21:54.45 James Extra high. As I go. 21:55.76 Frank Nice. 21:56.58 James do this i said audit it and then give me a report of all of my github actions understand all of them that are a day and i gave it a link to the documentation and there's all these auditing tools i think are built in the command line for uh actions so it went off in three ai credits later three cents three pennies three not you they don't even make pennies anymore so let you'd have to get a nickel back for this puppy 22:06.18 Frank Hmm. 22:11.91 Frank Okay. 22:15.36 Frank ah 22:18.67 James this This would be free actually, because they couldn't charge you a nickel. For three pennies, it wrote this, it audited all 50 repos, generated this whole report, and I had to update. It was like, oh, you need to update. I don't know. like the 80 different actions or whatever and i was like oh that's probably good because they like just turned off like they just officially they've been warning forever they turned it off 22:39.27 Frank Right. 22:39.94 James I still think it were war runs, but I don't know. I was like, okay, let's go do it. And then I was like, Hey, go. create PRs. for For all of them, right? And it was fun to watch because Luna was like. 22:47.64 Frank Yeah. 22:50.51 James Huh. Okay. like i need to go like figure out what versions and it's like okay now how am i gonna it's like i was watching the output is it's like 22:55.93 Frank Yeah. Ha ha. 22:59.12 James How am I going to... 23:00.85 Frank Extra high thinking. 23:00.75 James Do I like... do i Do I clone all the repos? do i Can I... host all this stuff and to do this. I think it used like the graph API to like do some diffing and things. 23:10.92 James So it didn't clone any repo. I just did all, and it opened up, it opened like 25 new issues on different repos or PRs. 23:12.97 Frank Oh nice, yeah. 23:17.66 James And it did all of them. And it just like one-shotted. it and that was five more cents so for under 10 cents i updated everything so what i'm thinking is how come I don't have an agent or how come there isn't an agent that I could turn on? Like, I'd be happy to pay for that. 23:31.74 James Right. give me that agent i guess i work at this company i could just I could. go do that and i know dependabot does this right depend about does this but 23:38.56 Frank Ha ha. Right. Okay. 23:42.28 James there but it does it for like npm packages and other stuff maybe it does it for actions But it's more for security vulnerabilities and normal updates. so That's the type of stuff, right? Like we've been talking about, like, Hey, just go off and do the thing. Like, okay. Like for example, 23:55.80 James Example number two. So. Um... The. Latest version of .NET, .NET. 10 .0 .401 just was released. 24:07.00 Frank woo Yeah. 24:07.93 James Yep. And. 24:09.71 Frank Xcode 27, speaking of the devil, speaking of iOS 27 and Mac OS 27. 24:13.19 James And alongside this release, the za the the the iOS Mac. maui team whatever all the the need that the the people that do the hard work and to make ourself run Um, 24:24.87 James Alex and team. They came out with a release um that included Xcode 27 support. that you have to have this build. 24:31.61 Frank Yeah. 24:32.71 James And I know this because... Um... One, I was running. a build last night at three in the morning and it failed because i didn't have 24:42.50 Frank Ah. 24:44.42 James Because Xcode 27 was required on the latest because I have like the latest. 24:47.01 Frank Yeah. 24:48.12 James I must have like service releases or whatever. I'm allowed on that version of ah the the .NET Runner. And I was like, oh. Interesting. Now, luckily, Xcode is available on runners, right? But this is a great example, which it should be, hey. 25:04.17 James you know, i've noticed that there's a brand new version of xcode 27 and the uh no it would have to then understand like hey this is a maui project or an ios project that this new version's come out but it's smart i just figure it out right it should it should be able to figure that out and then do the pull request like let's get this puppy going like let's let's get it moving you know what i mean because i need that that duo support bro 25:27.37 Frank Yeah. um Sorry, you you got my mind wandering there because um I think Xcode 27 is the first one that doesn't support Intel. I can... 25:36.13 James Correct. 25:36.94 Frank Because we talked about this on the podcast, but... Nothing more um exhilarating than seeing, oh, I actually can't build. some of my old software now. 25:45.64 James i was i was I was just last night when I was, again, up until 3 in the morning because of Millie. I was. setting up, i I'm going to take my fire number application that's on iOS and Android. I'm going to put it out on windows and Mac. And I was getting my Mac catalyst version. I was like, Hey. 26:01.10 James thanks to maui sherpa i have all my secrets all my provisioning profiles created it takes five seconds it's amazing and i was like hey can you create the get up action for me do the thing 26:06.14 Frank Mm hmm. 26:09.27 James And then it's like, Oh, like I need to build. And it's like, Oh, like. The default is to do this and this. And it's like, well, I'm going to make sure that X 64 and arm 64 bundles. I was like, Nope. I was like, Nope. 26:19.36 James I don't need it. 26:20.52 Frank it Doesn't exist. 26:19.72 James done yeah Get out of here. That exists. That exists. It's going to fail. Um, so I removed it. 26:25.45 Frank Yeah. 26:25.60 James I had to remove X 64 from the first time from mine, which is funny. Cause I was prepping the windows build and I was like, make sure you get X 64 and arm 64 into the build. Right. So. 26:35.55 Frank Yeah. Yeah, it's a little bit sad for me because I still have a bunch of users on um sixty four on Intel. so i'm i'm 26:43.28 James o 26:44.64 Frank I'm a little annoyed. So I think my my current version of the app, 16, I'm still going to use Xcode 26, but... 26:53.43 James For Mac. 26:53.74 Frank I do want to say for Mac, yeah, for iOS, I hate just having the repo on two different Xcode versions really bothers me too. 26:54.62 James Yeah. 27:01.86 James ah That's what I was thinking. 27:02.50 Frank I just hate it. 27:03.73 James Yeah. 27:04.03 Frank Yeah. So I think I'm going to do one more release with 26 and just not adopt any of the new APIs. They didn't change too much. It's fine. It's mostly the Duo, the iPhone Duo, that I really want to be updated to 27 for. 27:19.57 Frank The SDK, I mean. 27:20.03 James Yeah. 27:20.95 Frank Yeah. Anyway, I didn't mean to sidetrack us. 27:21.87 James I guess you could. 27:23.11 Frank We were having fun AI home conversations. You just made me like... I was 27. Oh, you you you give a little and you take a lot. 27:31.73 James do i do i need ah Do I need to update my macOS 27 to get Xcode 27? Not really. 27:38.48 Frank Do you want grammar checking you can't turn off? 27:42.10 James So I don't think you do. I think. 27:43.96 Frank I don't think you do. 27:44.07 James um 27:45.24 Frank um I know you can still run. um Xcode 26 on Mac OS 27. 27:48.32 James Tahoe. 27:51.42 Frank I think you can do the room. 27:51.85 James Yeah. 27:54.17 Frank Reverse also Let me see, I can check that. pretty easily here. do to do to do 27:59.80 James According to the... the Uh. the Mac iOS. Release notes. 28:07.07 Frank Mm hmm. 28:07.43 James It says Xcode 27 is required with this release. Xcode 27 requires Mac OS 26 .6 Tahoe. 28:12.75 Frank 26. Yeah. it It looks like at least... As of Xcode 27 .1, you could still use Mac OS 26 .6. 28:22.81 James Oh no, I need... 28:22.61 Frank Yeah. 28:23.94 James to update. i got 26 .5 .1 Oh, no, and it wasn't. 28:26.78 Frank you'll be fine i think they updated an emoji or something 28:30.33 James No! Okay, so once the update... 28:31.66 Frank ah 28:32.68 James to okay yeah so then i get the choice so here's the thing i guess So now I have the choice of updating to 26 .7 .1. Or... to 27 .01. 28:44.31 James Um, Am I ready to make the leap? 28:46.47 Frank Honestly. It's fine. They barely changed anything. The only thing they did was put Siri in all the wrong places. that's the That's the biggest difference I've noticed. Otherwise, I can't tell the difference between this OS and the other one. 29:01.18 Frank I... It's not that. We are definitely in a minor update year. Ignore all the hype. Not much has changed this year. 29:08.05 James Okay. 29:09.11 Frank Yeah. 29:09.29 James Hype train. 29:10.83 Frank Oh! 29:10.69 James Interesting. 29:10.85 Frank I will say the sidebar changed. So if if you're developing apps, I recommend you get an app like, you know, Cleanroom to test your apps on older versions of. Mac OS. et cetera. 29:23.23 James That is good. 29:23.27 Frank Yeah. 29:23.58 James I guess you got to recompile. 29:24.48 Frank Sidebar changed. 29:25.84 James you got to recompile to get the new look or does it just automatically happen 29:26.26 Frank Yeah. 29:29.69 Frank You need to re-come. I'm being a little bit hesitant there because usually you have to recompile. um Sometimes not. It's a good question. I don't have a good answer for you. 29:41.20 James I got many apps that have it, so I'm ready to. 29:45.06 Frank Hmm. 29:45.65 James Check that out. That is for sure. 29:46.96 Frank You're sidebarring all over the place. 29:48.84 James dude i sidebar so hard Like. 29:48.36 Frank Yeah. but 29:51.42 James hardest. i'm like like i sidebar on all my windows app and all my mac apps just like I'm all in on the sidebar. 29:55.59 Frank It's true. 29:58.40 James So tabs tabs on tabs on mobile sidebar everywhere else. It just, it just is a lovely life. 30:02.19 Frank Yeah. 30:03.12 James Just this is there. 30:05.19 Frank yeah wait till you see the new tab bar then you can decide or the new sidebar then you'll tell me if it's any good it goes to the top It goes to 11 instead of 10 now. 30:11.13 James Oh no. 30:15.23 Frank and it's a little weird 30:16.81 James Hmm. 30:16.51 Frank It's fine. You get used to it very quickly. But when I first installed Mac OS 27, it looked weird. iOS 27, I don't even notice the difference. 30:21.66 James I. 30:24.28 James Okay, so I always... 30:24.34 Frank So it's fine. 30:25.40 James i always thought the sidebar was weird in 26 because You know, it has the frame that comes out. It's a frame inside of a frame and it's like rounded corners inside of rounded corners. So many rounded corners. 30:35.22 Frank Yeah. 30:36.54 James But when you... when you Bring it out or put it in. It's like. the right hand, which you see the right hand curvature, of the line that pixel line that is like the the box around it. 30:46.43 Frank Yeah. 30:48.25 James It. It literally like. flies in and like goes. like over or under the red yellow green like Because they're two separate disconnected elements that aren't like... 30:56.28 Frank Yeah. 31:00.31 James connected in any ways, which seems weird to me. 31:00.80 Frank Well. They're connected now. 31:04.05 James Oh, okay. 31:04.03 Frank And I think that's what threw me off before. So in general, the big change in iOS or Mac OS 27 is they added. 31:06.39 James Got it. 31:11.43 Frank Ugly 3d effects to everything like the glass effect if you thought that it was a little much now it's a lot much so there are Highlights and shadows on basically everything. 31:17.09 James now 31:20.21 Frank Now, it looks like Windows Vista. Hi. Hi, Windows Vista. We all miss you. 31:25.20 James Back. 31:25.41 Frank um talk about Talk about Apple copying Microsoft. a And. That's the big difference. And the other difference is they finally got rid of the border. on the sidebar that's what i mean it goes all the way to the top So. 31:38.61 James Okay. 31:38.92 Frank It's a good thing, and it's a bad thing. Both. 31:40.86 James I'll give it a go. 31:41.20 Frank Both things. 31:42.17 James i'll give it a go i'm excited to to try it out yeah i think that uh that i mean i'm i'm kind of excited i know our time is like near because ios 27 is already out and the duo is like on its way here pretty soon but it's good to see the support drop for, for Don and 10, I can update all my apps, but I do think that like. 31:59.81 James I'm... I'm seeing all these ads everywhere and, and you know. Granted, I work at ah an AI company. Uh, and cloud company and enterprise company and and and developer tool to them and all the things But. 32:11.64 James You know, we've got a lot of AI. and yeah I use a lot of AI like every single day. 32:15.29 Frank Hehe. 32:16.62 James But. I'm still not. I guess I'm not ready to hand over. I was i was listening ah ah to... To a... to a Bloomberg interview where they were talking about Muse. 32:28.16 James And they were like, oh, yeah, like, you know, I needed it to. buy this or like, or I needed to negotiate as like the. canonical examples like can you negotiate me like lowered internet or like insurance prices or whatever. 32:40.43 Frank Oh god, right, yeah, yeah. Yeah. 32:42.45 James And he was like, oh, for me to do that, what I had to do is I had to give it all of my Gmail information, then all of my bank account information, then connect it to Stripe and do this. I'm like, you're just like giving that to meta. You're like handing. 32:54.37 Frank Yeah. 32:54.51 James all that information to matter. Like it's just all of it's just. Over to Facebook. 32:59.65 Frank You know? 33:00.95 James Bye. 33:01.21 Frank At least. 33:01.14 James I swear. 33:01.93 Frank you're You're spreading it out, though, because, you know, right now Google has it all. Might as well let all the big players have all the data. 33:05.73 James True. 33:07.76 Frank You know what? 33:08.96 James Why not? 33:08.98 Frank I don't trust one of them. Might as well not trust five of them. 33:12.91 James Yeah. 33:12.75 Frank ah You know, I think it's like... for the for the kids growing up these days. They're going to be the best off because all their data is just going to be flowing between all these big services anyway. 33:21.71 James Yeah. 33:25.58 Frank So they're just already in. They they they sign their soul to the devil and they're going to benefit from it. They're going to get all the features from the devil. 33:31.37 James Yeah. 33:33.49 Frank um It's us who... 33:33.46 James Well... 33:34.85 Frank haven't signed away yet. 33:36.39 James Well, like is that you know when you need to like connect a bank account? to like a service. 33:39.66 Frank Oh God, that's the worst. 33:40.24 James and And you can. 33:41.17 Frank It's the worst 33:42.23 James So the Trident, the Trident. classical classical way of doing this for kids that don't know how but they're pre-plaid. was you would. type in this long number your your routing number and your account number into a box And then you would wait a few days. 33:57.55 Frank Yeah. 33:57.67 James And you would wait a few days and then they would give you. 33:58.12 Frank Love it. 33:59.82 James Two deposits. Of course. different penny penny amounts, like 12 cents and 5 cents. 34:04.87 Frank So secure. What could go wrong? Yeah. 34:07.65 James And then they would ask you. Whoa. 34:10.08 Frank So secure. 34:11.04 James What were those two? Amounts. that were deposited. 34:14.07 Frank I bet you it was three cents and five cents, two cents and three cents, three cents and two cents. 34:20.02 James and And then if you guess. 34:21.15 Frank And then they take them back. 34:22.56 James Dude, they take those pennies. 34:22.94 Frank they They wanted their pennies back. 34:25.22 James I take the pennies back. They do a hey whole AHC transfer just to get those pennies back. 34:28.24 Frank think 34:32.97 James Um, Oh, A-C-H. It's a clearinghouse. 34:36.45 Frank That's it. 34:36.98 James You know, it's an automated clearing. 34:37.97 Frank Yeah. 34:39.07 James If you are interested in how... 34:39.30 Frank Yeah. 34:41.94 James Like. ACH is or it is. wild. It's like a whole... I watch a whole video on how banks work and it is bananas. 34:49.64 Frank Oh lord. 34:50.79 James But anyways, you would do that. And then it's like, cool. You're connected now though. That is your handshake. That is your, you know, when you get the message, of the two factor off from your phone and hopefully you're just getting it from an app now. 34:55.63 Frank Yeah. 35:00.10 James But that is like. That's how they do it. It's so wild. because So now they have plaid, right? And Plaid, you just like log into your Bank of America or your Chase or whatever your thing is. 35:05.12 Frank Yeah. 35:09.76 Frank Sure. 35:09.46 James And it's like, cool, here are your accounts. It's like good to go. But then you basically handed all of your data and information over to this random third-party connecting company. and then I'm just like... 35:18.16 Frank Yeah. 35:19.63 James It's so inconvenient. I'm just going to do it. I'm all in. And then. 35:23.26 Frank Yeah. 35:23.43 James um like heather like refuses so she's like still good she's still getting the pennies and doing the stuff 35:28.83 Frank It's cool. Gross! 35:30.65 James Yeah. 35:31.08 Frank It's so great. I think it's the American band. 35:32.45 James Yeah. 35:33.43 Frank system we just have an ancient terrible banking system But it's just so gross because that third party who connects them all, that company changes every five to ten years i'm old enough to see like there's always a new connector coming out and plaid happens to be the one and in du jour right now but it'll be something else eventually. 35:43.70 James Oh yeah. 35:53.55 Frank And then you got to remember, Oh, which ones does Plaid have access to? Which ones does the new one have? When the new Venmo comes out, whatever that money company is called, then there'll be a new connector and whatever. 36:02.49 James Oh gosh. 36:06.02 Frank Okay, now I'm just sounding like an old man, though. but 36:08.93 James Because we are. Because we are, Frank. 36:12.45 Frank How did we get on this topic? Can we go back to Apple TV 4K fourth generation? It's going to be awesome. A17 or A20. I wonder which one it's going to have. 36:21.27 James you have a Do you have a television? 36:24.36 Frank Yeah, I do. I do. 36:25.23 James Okay. 36:25.59 Frank um It's not even the 4K. Yeah, so I do want the 4K, but I have the world's lowest internet. Thank you, Elon Musk. So it doesn't really matter that much. What I want are 4K apps. 36:37.79 Frank Because once you see 1080. on a 4K TV, you can't. It hurts your eyes. The pixels hurt your eyes. So I have to buy the 4K just for the user interface mostly. just for the rendered buttons and the drop shadows. I need my glass look to be. 4k glass. 36:55.02 James Super glassy. Yeah, we. 36:56.33 Frank Yeah. 36:57.46 James i think we have the apple tv 4k but we just run in 1080p because we only have a 1080p tv so like i still refuse you know i think that 37:03.21 Frank Right. 37:06.67 James it's crazy because i might have my switch too and you know i i have the the fork but like I... I don't know, tiny peaches, like it's good enough, I guess, for me. it's so I don't know. i'm i'm like I think about it, but then I was like, well, this TV still works. 37:23.48 James And it's ah it's a plasma. 37:24.22 Frank Yeah, no. Yeah. 37:25.01 James I don't even know how to get rid of it. 37:26.06 Frank Yeah. 37:26.27 James I think I have to like. 37:26.74 Frank Exactly. 37:27.78 James I think I have to drive it bought back to the store I bought it in Washington for them to recycle it. 37:30.32 Frank Yeah. You have to have a funeral. Yeah, yeah. 37:32.80 James Yeah. 37:33.17 Frank It's a whole thing. 37:35.42 James It dripped the plasma out. 37:35.73 Frank You have to sign interstate paperwork. Yeah, yeah. 37:38.68 James I think so, to get it back. where This poor TV has gone through the gambit. That is for sure. now but 37:44.75 Frank Yeah. 37:45.41 James I've had it. 37:45.55 Frank No, it's not worth. that If you like your TV, you like your TV. 37:48.57 James I love my TV. 37:48.49 Frank There's no need to update it. 37:50.33 James The TV, it it's the blacks. 37:50.42 Frank Yeah. 37:52.55 James They're so black. In fact, they're completely black. 37:54.97 Frank but 37:56.28 James Um, 37:56.41 Frank Micro LED. Oh, LED. Yeah, sure. Let's go with that one. They're getting pretty good though. 38:01.53 James It's getting pretty good. I mean, there are no... I guess they're no OLED or plasma, but they're they're getting really good. I mean, they're thin. 38:06.89 Frank They're brighter than OLED. Wow, we are all over the place this time. 38:08.56 James That's true. 38:10.20 Frank But um yeah, the the darks aren't, the darks get the the bloom effect, the bleed. But um they can crank those puppies up. 38:16.13 James Yeah. 38:18.82 Frank Like I've been having fun with HDR. That's what I'm actually, um I wrote a little neural network that actually fake HDRs things. 38:26.79 James Hmm. 38:27.10 Frank And like my goal is if there is a sunshine on the screen, the whole room should light up and I should have to like kind of dodge away from the TV a little bit, you know, every time the sunshine is. 38:37.20 Frank That's my goal. You know, white is not good enough. It must be blinding white sunlight on my TV. 38:43.19 James well Yeah. And that's the thing is why I've been waiting. on a t i'm getting a tv because i want the I want the real HDR, right? Because there's like, there's like what I've. figured out like there's TVs that are like, oh, it's HDR 10. 38:56.18 James compatible which means it can like receive an hdr signal i think we think we did a whole podcast on this But. 38:57.48 Frank No, it means nothing. Yeah. Yeah. 39:02.38 James Um... like the switch the switch 2 is it does have hdr in it it actually has it on the screen but um I haven't. i haven't like seen it on anything and apparently like metroid is like just gorgeous like apparently you can do hdr right and you can do it wrong and uh some games like just like nail it and it's like gorgeous and at 120 hertz like I'll be. 39:23.20 James ah Bonkers, but... I don't know 39:24.73 Frank Well, you know what else was leaked? I think they're talking about new OLED MacBooks. So we are. You can finally do that because they're all micro LED right now, I believe. 39:31.58 James Whoa. 39:34.20 James Yeah, but how much... Can you possibly charge for these MacBooks, dude? like they 39:39.17 Frank Oh a lot. A lot, dude. Like, because what they just went through the price hike, right? They just did their 30 or 50 % increase in price. I'm seeing this for the TV to like the TV used to be 130 bucks, I think. Then it went up to 200 bucks. They're talking about like the new ones probably like. 39:54.86 Frank 250. Who knows? Yeah, I can't. 41:17.58 Frank Yeah. 41:17.96 James I mean, there's definitely times that then I guess you just tether. you know. 41:22.00 Frank Exactly. The phone's good enough at that. 41:24.49 James yeah 41:26.61 Frank Yeah, because I used to get the cellular on my iPads. 41:26.68 James Yeah, I don't know. 41:30.50 Frank But then I ended up spending $100 a month for a couple of years and not knowing it because of that. And so I decided, let's not do that ever again. 41:39.41 James That's how they getcha. That's how they get you. 41:40.75 Frank That's how they get you. 41:42.60 James Yeah, I'll be interested. I would love to see them Do more. I mean, it is. HomePod. 41:50.07 Frank Still not touchscreen. They won't give us the touchscreen on the Mac. See, I would pay for a touchscreen. Macbook. Bye. 41:56.44 James I would. 41:56.84 Frank They're protecting their iPad. 41:58.72 James Yeah, it was just on my, ah like because ah especially on the the MacBook Air that I have, it would be super nice because they have. the iPhone. you know, mirroring and. 42:08.65 James the first thing you want to do is just like scroll it and like not with your mouse and keyboard or not with thing. 42:12.23 Frank Yeah. Cute little PC running some Linux. 42:53.27 James 1500 bucks, bro. 42:55.61 Frank I hear it's all RAM. Here, 1 ,200 of that's RAM, 300 is the... CPU. 43:02.18 James I think so. I mean, it's really fascinating because it goes from like either 512. Um... SSD or. a two terabyte and. It's also fascinating too, because they have like an AMD Zen 4 in it. And like they decided not to go on and with an ARM chip, which I wonder if that would bring down price at all. 43:20.95 James But. I was watching and yeah, it's like I am. I am curious if the Ramageddon. Praising. Will kill it. I was I was I did not realize, I guess I've just been, I haven't needed a new computer since we bought these at the perfect time, which luckily for us. 43:35.56 Frank Mm hmm. I'll be fascinated to see how the. 44:20.52 Frank I... 44:22.17 James Steam machine does. I mean, only because. You know, I know it's not a handheld, but. you know the i guess the steam deck is right but you know my switch 2 is like 500 bucks. I don't know how Nintendo is doing it. 44:34.07 James I mean, maybe there's eating it, but. 44:37.52 Frank There's just not much RAM on there either. um I think. The steam machine's a little bit... Tricky. um My feeling is it's a little DOA dead on arrival. like um It's just they got hit by the RAM prices. At $1 ,000, it's a nice machine. 44:53.30 Frank um They involved us really well at the software. Like they made a version of Linux that's tolerable. And it's all pre-configured. All the drivers are installed. and You have a machine that just works. And it plays your games. Everyone loves Steam. So it's it's a good machine. But, um... 45:09.05 Frank 1 ,500 is just asking a lot. It's just... 45:11.62 James Yeah. 45:13.33 Frank when you can go get a 3090. 45:16.95 Frank Whatever. 45:18.67 James Yeah. i like I like the look of it. I like that it's a box. It looks nice. 45:23.77 Frank It's no iPhone Duo for two grand, though, so, you know. I guess it is three quarters the price of a telephone. 45:27.83 James Sure. 45:30.54 James Oh. my gosh you know you know ah we bought our smart car for Like $4 ,000, AKA. two iPhone 2s. 45:37.70 Frank Yeah.
