madelyn (00:05) Hi and welcome to the Unscripted Files. This is our Monday mini sode full of industry news with Emily Wilson. It's Monday, August seventeenth. Welcome back, Emily. Emily Wilson (00:15) Thank you for having me. madelyn (00:17) School's back in session And it seems like that has come with a lot of new movement in the industry, a lot of new commissions, some announcements the past couple of weeks. Netflix in particular announcing a really interesting, interactive dating format. Can you talk to me about Netflix? Will you marry me? Emily Wilson (00:36) Yeah, so Netflix has announced Will You Marry Me coming in twenty twenty seven across twelve episodes when Netflix members will be voting live on who stays in the running, who gets sent home, which dates happen. So Netflix staying within the live space and the interactive space. madelyn (00:55) I think this is a perfect evolution of the dating format. I think audiences want to try to play producer and be able to spot chemistry and connection and try to make a match and be right. So I think this will feed into that delusion, and it'll be really interesting to see. To see how it plays out. I'm actually really excited for this. I love a new innovative format, especially in the dating space. So I think this will be interesting. And I also think it'll be the first of many that are back to allowing audiences to vote. We are all craving monoculture again, being a part of this, you know, watching the same show at the same time. It's very, it's very American Idol back in its heyday. So I think I think we're gonna see more of this. And then I was just telling you that Arizona is becoming the new hotbed of reality TV. We saw it happen with Charleston, South Carolina. And you know, we see it sort of happen in these little areas of the country. Salt Lake City was the last one. And now Arizona is becoming a new place of interest. what's up with these young hot twenty somethings in Arizona? Emily Wilson (02:04) So Netflix has greenlit Arizona Hot which is an ensemble reality series following a group of ambitious twenty somethings fresh out of college as they navigate careers, friendships, romance and rivalry. madelyn (02:16) Yeah, I know of multiple shows being developed in Arizona right now. And I think it's for a couple of different reasons. there is a large Mormon LDS community in Arizona. So I know specifically that there is a Secret Lives of Mormon Wives spinoff brewing down there. And then like in when you look at sort of university culture and like conversation. I know that Arizona State specifically is known for having like really beautiful women and for being a big party school. So I just think in general it's a really interesting new focus in a in a new part of the country that I think we are going to see a lot of shows come out of Arizona in the next 18 months. I'll just say that. Emily Wilson (02:57) Excited to see. madelyn (02:59) Next on the docket, the voice is going celebrity. this is interesting to me. I mean, I'm like, who are we gonna, you know, is James Marsden gonna pop on there and like sing his little heart out? Like, I'm cu I'm curious how is it celebrities that we know have a voice? Is it people that we it's a total hidden talent we had no idea? I'm so curious about how. This format's gonna play out. Emily Wilson (03:25) Me too, I'm excited to see this because I've loved it when like different celebrities have popped on as like a guest star on various international editions of The Voice and just done a blind audition as a bit of a joke. But this arriving in spring twenty twenty seven will see actors, athletes, influencers, comedians, reality stars and other celebrities compete. So yeah, I'm excited to see how this plays out. madelyn (03:51) And I mean, Kiki Palmer is going to be hosting, I mean, an absolute favorite along with Joe Jonas, Queen Latifah. Like it's just gonna I think it's going to be really fun. I think Kiki makes every show she's a part of really fun and incredible. And she has amazing charisma with everybody. I think I'm gonna tune in for this one. more competition formats we're seeing get green lit. Another one just got a US version at Amazon. LOL, last one laughing is a comedy format, right? Emily Wilson (04:20) Yes, so it's very beloved in the UK and in Australia, but Full Well Entertainment is bringing it to the US. and it's originally a Japanese series, but it's been in twenty five different territories. So excited to see this one come to the US. madelyn (04:35) I didn't realize that it's so ten of the t it's ten comics thrown together for six hours and the one mandate is make everyone else lose it without laughing yourself. So basically you laugh, you lose. I didn't realize that was the case. Cause you and I both know that when you're not supposed to laugh is when things are the funniest, right? So okay, this is actually this I think this is is going to be funny. I kind of love this. Okay, great. and then another another format adaptation. Love is Blind is headed to Canada. And you can apply now. So if you're Canadian, get in there. And by in there I mean in the pods. Emily Wilson (05:16) Yeah, I mean excited to see that as well. It's had eleven international spin offs, so Canada seems to be had eleven international spin offs, so Canada seems to be a natural next move for the format. madelyn (05:29) Yeah, and speaking of hotbeds of culture and interest, I mean, with the success of I mean, I I hate to say it, with the success of heated rivalry, Canada and hockey and like, I don't know, I think it's it's becoming this sort of like adjacent cousin to us that we're suddenly very interested in. Because it's similar but also very different culturally. And I think it'll be really fun to see these different cultural norms and ideals play out in the Canadian version. and then lastly, want shout out we had Adam Neuhaus on the Unscripted Files interviewing, talking about the nonfiction hot list. and really exciting. Yahoo and the nonfiction hot list have selected 20 films from nearly a thousand submissions that are going to get a global audience on Yahoo. You can go to yahoo.com backslash nonfiction hot list. and check out all of these incredible documentary short films that have been submitted. So love that Adam is always trying to uplift unscripted filmmakers and documentary filmmakers, so wanted to give a quick shout out there. Emily, you're in New York right now and we just found out that we barely missed each other. We both didn't know we were going to be there. This is tragic. Emily Wilson (06:40) I know. I cannot believe that actually happened and it cannot happen again. madelyn (06:45) What does your perfect New York day look like? Emily Wilson (06:48) My goodness. I'm obsessed with the food here. So usually involves I mean so generic but lots of cookies. Always. madelyn (06:57) Like, do are you Levain? Are you milk bar? Do you have a favorite cookie? Emily Wilson (07:02) feel like I mean, culture espresso, I think they won like madelyn (07:05) No culture. Wait, you know about the culture cookie. It is the best one. Emily Wilson (07:09) I do. It's so good. my god. madelyn (07:13) Wait, you know Ball. I love this. Well, I hope that the rest of your trip is full of many more cookies. Thank you so much again for joining us.
