00:04.97 The ModGolf Podcast Welcome to the ModGolf Podcast where we speak with the entrepreneurs, the innovators, the disruptors, and the influencers who are shaping the future of golf. I am your host, Colin Weston, and welcome to season 18 of the ModGolf podcast. We have another 12 episodes here to finish up 2025 for you. 00:24.14 The ModGolf Podcast Last season, we just hit that milestone of our 200th episode. Very proud of that. We've been going for eight years since May 2017. So hey, as a listener, I want to thank you. If this is the very first episode you've ever listened to. 00:37.68 The ModGolf Podcast Welcome. If you've been with us and listened to all 200, wow, that's amazing. I don't think I've even listened to them all. Well, actually i have because I've recorded them, so that's not really fair. But hey, I just want to say thank you and welcome for joining us back. So today, this is going to be a fun one. There's going to be lots of energy here. 00:57.41 The ModGolf Podcast And my guest is Mr. David Buck, who is the founder of Big Swing Kings. What is Big Swing Kings, you ask? Well, I'm not going to reveal that. I'm going to let Mr. Buck tell us what Big Swing Kings is. So with no further ado, David, welcome to the ModGolf Podcast! 01:19.44 David Hey, thanks so much. Thanks for having me on, man. This is awesome. What is it? What is Big Swing Kings? Well, I want to bring more fun to the game of golf. Now, I believe that you have more fun when you choose to be joyful on the golf course and when you actually know why you're hitting the ball where you're hitting it and shoot lower scores. 01:40.52 David So we do that through all sorts of different things. I roast people's golf swings on, I mean, sorry, instruct people's golf swings, for online coaching. aWe've got some courses available and basically i love golf so much. I just can't help, but let it ooze out of every one of my pores. 02:02.05 The ModGolf Podcast The energy is already coming through my screen here as as we go. So, okay. So who is Mr. David Buck? what What gives you the right to roast people's golf swings? 02:16.55 David I love it. You know what? 02:18.09 David It's awesome because everybody wants to know who's doing what, who should I listen to not to listen to? You don't want to listen to me. Fantastic. Don't listen to me. If you do want to listen to me, fantastic. Listen to me. I am a nobody failed golf pro from 20 years ago that has loved the game ever since. I did all the junior golfy stuff. I did the world juniors and the ranked juniors in the university team stuff. And then I turned pro and I played pro for several years. And you won't see my name on any trophies. 02:48.58 David You won't see a bunch of stuff on my wall. But for three years, I played professionally and loved every minute of it until I chose to go a different direction. Now life has kind of come full circle for me. i I'm now 43 years old. I've got some grey hair on my head. 03:04.65 David I got a little bit more wisdom, but I have the same love of the game that I did when I was... 15 years old. And maybe I understand a little bit more as a student to the game for so long and having applied it to my own game. And I just want to take some of that knowledge, some of that wisdom, some of that passion for the game and help other people get better at this because it really is a simple game. It's not an easy game, but it is a simple game. So I like to keep things simple. 03:36.05 David I like to bring it back to what is happening at the ball and help you to understand how you can get better. It's not about me. It's about you getting better. So that's what's going on. 03:43.79 The ModGolf Podcast Nice, nice. Now I have signed up to your newsletter and we've talked about this myself as a beleaguered and struggling and sometimes unsatisfied 16 handicapper that there are definite gaps in my game. And one thing that I've always struggled with, and maybe it's my own undiagnosed ADHD as far as that focus piece. And I noticed one thing, the first email I received from you once I signed up was let's look at one thing at a time here because I know it is overwhelming for me. It's like, I'm not consistent off the tee. My short game needs a lot of work. Then it's my iron play. 04:21.52 The ModGolf Podcast It's like, where do I start? So talk about your process. 04:27.00 The ModGolf Podcast Let's say someone will sign up for your newsletter and go on the Big Swing Kings website, which we will include in the show notes here, of course, as we always do. So tell us about your process, sir. 04:38.07 David Well, you happen to drop the word that everybody uses and nobody really knows what to do with. And that's the word of consistency. I'm not consistent off the tee. I don't hit my irons consistently. I don't chip consistently. 04:49.15 David I three-putt consistently. 04:49.20 The ModGolf Podcast Right. 04:50.39 David Okay. Yeah. You three-putt consistently. But everything else is this desire that we have to be consistent. And yet we don't actually look at the part of our swing that is the most important, that's going to actually give us the kind of consistency that we think we want. 05:05.95 David I've spent too many hours on YouTube golf stuff in my head. 05:12.90 The ModGolf Podcast right 05:14.22 David But the thing that I see most on there is how to take it away, what to do at the top of the backswing, what to do with our elbows, where our feet should be, where we should be pointing, where we should be holding the club. 05:25.41 David But very, very rarely do we see anything online about where we actually should be when we hit the ball at impact. You know, that point where the club actually hits the ball. So for everybody, great golfer, new golfer. I always start at the ball, the foot before, the foot after. What is happening there? Where do we want to be? And then how to get there. Because if you don't know where to get to at the ball to start with, how can you possibly know how to add speed to that? 05:49.88 The ModGolf Podcast right? 05:55.72 David So my process is figure out where you need to be at the ball and then let's let your body add speed to that. Sure, using the right drills whatnot. But if you're not able to hit the ball straight with a foot long swing on either side, you're not going to hit it straight with a full powered driver off the tee box when you're smashing the living heck out of it. 06:16.33 The ModGolf Podcast Yeah, that kind of makes sense. It really does. So, okay, let's dig into this a little bit. So talk about the AHA moment that you decided to put together your services with Big Swing Kings. 06:31.51 The ModGolf Podcast I know you've got lots ah lots of plates spinning and lots balls in the air, even though they're all interconnected with what you do, creating on social media, both Instagram and YouTube and the great content you have going on there. 06:40.96 The ModGolf Podcast So let's strip that back. Let's focus. It's going to be the F word today. the F word we're going to focus to start with here on Big Swing King. So what was that AHA moment yourself as an entrepreneur that you saw that there was a business opportunity and also your differentiator? Because there's a lot of great people out there that are trying to help people improve their golf game. So yeah, what's your secret sauce and how did you get started? 07:05.26 David My big AHA moment actually happened 22 years ago. 07:09.44 The ModGolf Podcast All right. 07:10.29 David I'll get through this extraordinarily quickly and then I'll jump into current day. I got an impromptu lesson, a five minute lesson a former top 10 player, Tim Simpson. 07:23.77 David And he got mad at me during a practice round and not mad at me, mad at youths in general. 07:28.52 The ModGolf Podcast okay 07:28.73 David You know, "all you dumb young guys, y'all do the same stupid thing!" 07:32.03 The ModGolf Podcast kids these days. 07:32.40 David And of course yeah, that was that that got my attention. 07:33.91 The ModGolf Podcast Wow. 07:35.84 David So I said, well, what do you mean? He says, well, come to the range tomorrow morning at 6.30 and I'll show you. Okay. So I show up the range and he showed me something that revolutionized my golf swing in five minutes. 07:48.69 The ModGolf Podcast wow 07:49.26 David And that kind of thing illustrated to me that it's about that clicking moment. We can get all the knowledge that we want, but it's not until the player actually understands and can feel and can apply that they actually make changes. It's like, okay, great. I know where my elbow is supposed to be, but I can't get it there. 08:11.27 David It's not until you understand that feel. And it can be just this little moment that it's like, okay, i now I understand. I pull it all together. So then I started posting some of this stuff online. 08:22.24 David a year and a half ago. 08:24.13 David And it just kind of exploded like multi-million views and, and people reaching out. it's like, well, can you have a look at my swing? And what happened was, ah I put one video up. 08:35.47 David It was probably my 11th video that, that went up. And and somebody reached out after that video and said, can you have a look at my swing? And I said, sure. So of course I did it in my own way, which is I made made fun of them first and then instructed after, because that's one of the beautiful things about golf is we all know, no matter what level we're at, we all suck to some level and we can suck at a moment's notice. 08:57.82 David I mean, you've seen the tour guys hit a shank every once in a while. 08:58.53 The ModGolf Podcast Oh yeah. Oh, I have. 09:01.27 David So I start by making this whole community where we can make fun of each other. And so I made fun of him first and then very simply and very quickly showed him Essentially the same lesson that I had received 23 years ago. And this thing blew up. I had 400 people asking for swings in my email within like five days of that. 09:23.41 David And it's like, okay, better rush and scramble and put something together to separate the freebies from the page, shall we say. 09:32.03 The ModGolf Podcast Right. 09:32.16 David And offer some kind of a product. And that's just continued to snowball for the next year and a half to the point where now this is what I do full time. 09:42.29 The ModGolf Podcast There we go. So I always love to learn about the process behind the brand. So Big Swing Kings, I want to hear some other names that didn't work. 09:54.32 The ModGolf Podcast Is that the one that immediately come up and that's it? Or did you have other ones? I always love to hear the ones that almost made it or that you talked about. 10:01.63 David Yeah, no, i understand what you're saying. 10:03.63 The ModGolf Podcast Maybe some other names too and how you arrived at Big Swing Kings. 10:04.01 David Sure, I had one i had one that I was just playing around with a couple years earlier called the Simplistic Golfer because the whole process behind golf, as I say, is very simple. Not easy, but simple. 10:17.03 David And I got into doing this this fun stuff and I'm like, it's not fun enough. There's not enough joie de vivre in there. 10:25.66 The ModGolf Podcast Yes. 10:25.88 David And it didn't match my personality. So I started throwing names out, did the chat GPT summary. It's like, I want something super fun, funny, mocking, sarcastic, satirical. 10:41.89 David And, this is one that popped up and it was just immediately like, yep, that one. And my wife did up a brand logo in the next 12 minutes like she does. 10:53.28 David And voila, there was no deep thinking behind it other than I wanted something that matched the kind of not serious, fun atmosphere that that I am. 11:06.85 The ModGolf Podcast There we go. And you bring that in spades, sir. Absolutely. So do you find that you've, as far as the, I guess the the market or potential clients that you have in your community, the fact that you're Big Swing Kings that may infer that it's guys only, are you are you open to Big Swing Queens also? 11:30.43 David Absolutely. I have female students as well. But the interesting thing about it is I expected to get a lot more backlash from mocking, the making fun of thing than I have. 11:32.80 The ModGolf Podcast yeah 11:47.50 David It's been almost entirely positive. which really surprised me because in some of the different online ventures that we've done in the past, you step out of line a little bit and you get, you get bashed in the comments, you get name calling and all that kind of stuff. But I find in this people are just like, sweet, let's go. One of the body motions that people do, that's really quite detrimental to the golf swing is, 12:17.83 David The technical term would be called early extension, which of course I call those people being members of the Humpers Club. But that kind of stuff just very specifically separates me from the kind of golf instructor that I want to be. I don't want to be serious, professional, you know, here's all my qualifications. 12:41.92 The ModGolf Podcast Yes. 12:43.07 David I want you to have fun playing this game and I want you to get better at it. And that kind of curation happens really quickly. As soon as you start making fun of people, you start making fun of things. 12:55.55 David I don't really talk against things. I just try to stick as closely to the truth as possible while also making somebody laugh. 13:04.92 The ModGolf Podcast Love this. Love this. You just got me thinking here because we talked about this after we finish up with our long form audio conversation here for the ModGolf podcast, we are going to jump over to the ModGolf YouTube channel. So we'll have a video. So we'll be able to show some of the things you've been doing. 13:20.88 The ModGolf Podcast I just thought it may be kind of fun. Well, maybe be fun for you, maybe be painful for me. Maybe you'll make me cry. But as a 16 handicapper, I haven't shot any video in over a year. I was definitely more early extension, more humpy, as you put it. 13:36.78 The ModGolf Podcast I've worked on that to remove the the hump. ah But who knows, maybe even right here, I could take a golf swing and you can roast me. I think I could take it. 13:47.49 The ModGolf Podcast You're not going to make me cry. So are you are you up for that? Are you up for giving me a roast? 13:50.69 David I'm up for it. I'm up for it. And i'm and maybe I'll set the computer up or the camera up out in my in my golf shed so I can do some full-on full-on roasting and education. 14:00.78 David So that might work. 14:00.99 The ModGolf Podcast I love it. I love it. So, hey, everyone that's listening, i strongly encourage you to jump over to watch what David and I are going to do there on the YouTube channel. And yeah, it's going to be a different conversation. 14:12.79 David And they can see my beautiful face. 14:14.75 The ModGolf Podcast Right? And who doesn't want to see that? 14:16.69 David My mom says I have a beautiful face. So come have a look. 14:18.88 The ModGolf Podcast You do. And when I first saw you, at least in person, you certainly look like you could be a stunt double for Brian Harmon. 14:33.43 David Ooh, now we're thinking. Now i'd need my golf game to be a stunt double for Brian Harmon. 14:37.83 The ModGolf Podcast Well, I don't know. And plus you'd have to play left-handed too. That could be tricky for you I don't know. I don't know. 14:43.07 David I am actually learning how to play left-handed. 14:45.47 The ModGolf Podcast Why? 14:46.15 David Now, we haven't talked about this yet, but I gave myself a challenge that would last for years. And I'm just documenting the whole thing because if golf is simple, then I should be able to learn it all over again. 14:59.92 David If I follow my own program, I should be able to learn it all over again. If my program is any good anyways. 15:04.68 David Right. So I, I jumped in and said, okay, well, I'm going to keep doing this until I break par. Now I'm an awful long ways from breaking par. In fact, I went out to play yesterday. It was very rainy. It was very wet. 15:16.25 David And I lost nine golf balls on the front nine. playing left handed. 15:22.21 David Now I found 16 in the woods. So I was up seven balls, but. 15:24.88 The ModGolf Podcast So you made money. There we go. I remember years ago when I was taking a lesson and the pro that was getting a that lesson from that day, he did this exercise because I wasn't dropping my back elbow. And because I was just still casting the club at this time. This is 10, 12 years ago. 15:50.49 The ModGolf Podcast And he said okay, we're going to do this little drill. Because I played a lot of baseball and he knew this and he says, okay, well, I want you to pick up some golf balls and just throw them into the net sidearm. Like you're throwing across the diamond, like a shortstop. 16:03.64 The ModGolf Podcast So I play right-handed but I pick up some balls and I'm left-handed throwing and writing. So I pick them up and I start throwing them and throwing them. And he starts looking at me. 16:13.95 The ModGolf Podcast He looks at the clubs, he looks at me, looks at the clubs. he goes, wait a second, you're left-handed? I'm like, yeah. He says, I think maybe you should play golf left-handed. And I thought to myself, 16:25.87 The ModGolf Podcast I'm not going to shoot 135 for three years. And I don't have the time or the patience to work through that pain and misery. Unlike you, or maybe you're just more masochistic than I am. 16:38.22 David Crazy, yep. 16:38.26 The ModGolf Podcast Your pain tolerance is much higher. And I said, no, we're going to do the best we can playing right-handed here. So, so yeah, he tried to convert me and I said, no, but it sounds like, yeah so for you to start from zero to do that you find that is a great way just to get the kind of gain insights for your clients that are just starting the game. 16:59.86 David It's helping me to understand how to how to learn again, but also the biggest question that comes up to me is, is it affecting your right-handed swing negatively? And no, it's not. It's actually helping me think through the game of golf again. 17:12.60 David Because when I learned it, I was 13 years old, right? I mean, what do I remember from that? 17:15.44 The ModGolf Podcast Right. 17:17.41 David Not a whole lot. 17:18.72 The ModGolf Podcast Sure. 17:19.34 David And so now being able to go back over it again and feel what it's like to not be able to get the club square at impact or to feel how to change and make these swing adjustments. 17:30.57 David All my swing adjustments now are, are extraordinarily micro. It's like, I want to squeeze my elbows together just to touch more at the top. Like that's the kind of crap that I'm working on. 17:42.18 The ModGolf Podcast Yeah, yeah. 17:42.21 David Not okay. 17:42.50 The ModGolf Podcast Dang. Yeah. 17:43.23 David How do I actually generate speed with my club and keep it pointed the right direction? So it's been a real eye opener for me. I went out, the first round that I played, I hadn't touched a club left-handed. 17:53.99 David I went and shot 98. which I thought was pretty darn good. 17:57.90 David And then a few weeks later went out and played and shot 80, 90, sorry, 95, the first round, 88, the second round. 18:06.40 David So 95, 88. And so that's the starting point. So we'll see how we progress from there. 18:11.61 The ModGolf Podcast Wow. That's not bad at all. If I'm playing from the from the right side we wouldn't have to give each other strokes. We can play straight up and you probably still beat me, which I think I might lose my mind, but that's okay. 18:21.54 David Yeah. Yeah. 18:25.37 The ModGolf Podcast That's okay. 18:26.30 The ModGolf Podcast So, hey, one thing I want wanted to ask you, I did learn that you are a longtime practitioner and advocate of same length irons and wedges, just like Mr. Bryson DeChambeau. 18:38.68 The ModGolf Podcast So what's going on there? Why are you such a staunch advocate for that? So tell us about your thoughts on that. 18:44.39 David Sure. Sure. I'm an advocate of simplicity. 18:50.44 The ModGolf Podcast Mm-hmm. 18:52.26 David Of course, I like all of the fancy stuff. I like hitting the flop shots and hitting the ball off the tee as far as I can and all that kind of stuff. That's great. That's wonderful. And that that'll help you a little bit. But what I really want to do is I want to hit the ball straight. 19:05.56 David And I know this may even be a controversial topic on its own, but people are always talking about, oh, I play a fade or I play a draw. Well, what about straight? Why can't we play it straight? There have been a few ball strikers through history who have played straight balls. 19:23.00 David So it's possible, albeit not easy. But if you look at the ingredients of straight, it's ah it's the club moving through the ball in a straight line, essentially at your target, and then the club itself being pointed at your target when you hit the ball. 19:41.02 David So it's essentially minimizing side spin. And so for me, the practice is all about um getting to impact with my club moving straight with the club pointed at the target. 19:56.14 David And that's the baseline. That's where I want to be. The idea of having a whole bunch of clubs in your bag that are all the same length, that are all the same weight, and only vary based on their lofts, removes some of the complexity from the game. Because if you look at a standard set of irons, you've got your lob wedge all the way to your four iron, 10 clubs that are all different lengths. okay They're different lengths for a reason, I understand. you get more club head speed on the four iron than you do in the lob wedge. 20:24.77 David And some would argue that you get more control with the lob wedge than with the club being shorter. Okay, fine. But your ball position has to change with every with every time you pull out a new club, your spine angle has to change in order to have the relative same spine angle. And so it's very possible to do, but it it requires an enormous amount of hours to get all those little intricacies figured out so that you can pull out a four iron and hit it. And then you can pull out a nine iron and hit it and know where that has to be in your stance and where your body position has to be. 20:57.93 David If every time I pulled out an iron was the exact same setup, holy crap. And so I bought a set of irons, the same company that made the US Open winning irons for Mr. DeChambeau. 21:12.27 David And they arrived and I went and played. And of course, I documented the whole thing and you can see it. I was extraordinarily shocked to say that all my yardages were basically the same. 21:24.12 David Okay, sure. The sand wedge went eight yards further than my normal sand wedge. And the four iron went six yards shorter than my regular four iron. Okay. And as I started playing these, my accuracy, my greens and regulation went way up, like percentage wise, way up. Okay. From, from 12 or 13, it went to 14 or 15. It was significant amounts of greens and rate. Like every time you pull one of these things out of the bag, it has this inherent amount of accuracy that you cannot get any other way. 21:56.16 David Second to that, there is this other side of the same length. The general consensus is fantastic. Same length eliminates complexities and it helps everybody to a point. Okay. 22:09.90 David But it's the to a point that is the downside of. So as you get closer to the four iron, five iron, it's a lower launch, less spin. So in dry conditions, you're going to have a hard time holding the green. 22:22.59 David Fantastic. So why not then go same length from lob wedge to eight iron or seven iron or six iron and then get progressively longer? Well, my second set of irons from the from the same company, from Avota Golf, is a set that goes lob wedge to eight iron and then is progressively longer at seven, six, five, four. 22:45.86 David Because if I'm 210 yards out, 215 yards out, I do want to hit the green and I want to stop the ball to stop. 22:52.66 The ModGolf Podcast Yes. 22:53.60 David Okay. So then i started playing that set of irons. as a same length set so with my seven six five four that are progressively longer i grip down more and more and more till the four irons at the end of the grip unless i need more height and spin so i get the best of both worlds you get the accuracy from the same length set and then you get the height when you need it from the longer clubs but um if you ever get a set if if any of the listeners ever get a set and you start playing them and you play them for a month If you go back to your variable length set of irons after that, you will notice exactly what I'm talking about. You just don't have the same kind of accuracy and you'll be longing for pulling one of those same length clubs out of your bag and just knowing where you want to hit it. So circling back to the first point, which is I want things to go straight. 23:43.03 David The fewer variables there are in my equipment, the easier it is for me to find straight. 23:49.86 The ModGolf Podcast The simplistic golfer. There we go. 23:51.56 David You betcha. Yeah. It's a good name. It just doesn't have quite quite the same ring to it. 23:55.74 The ModGolf Podcast Yeah, I think, yeah, Big Swing Kings definitely has more were more pop to it. That's for sure. That's for sure. 24:02.02 David Yeah. 24:02.66 The ModGolf Podcast Okay, so getting back to Big Swing Kings. Let's treat myself as one of your clients, as a persona. I've just signed up and I'm looking, I see that you offer three different offers. I guess we can put it here. You've got a self-paced swing consistency course. You've got a personalized in-depth swing analysis. And then if you want to go for the kind of the Rolls Royce for that fully, say small batch handcrafted experience with you, David. 24:35.35 David Wow, that's talking it up. 24:36.82 The ModGolf Podcast There we go. There we go. 24:38.56 The ModGolf Podcast You do have the online one-on-one coaching on a monthly basis. So let's talk through this. I just signed up. ah You don't know me from Adam. You haven't seen my swing yet. ah You haven't roasted me quite yet here. So where do we go? How do we start? 24:55.29 David Sure. the first thing we talk about process, I mean, you have to understand in golf that it is such an amazing game. And if you can understand that it is simple, and you can actually make significant gains very, very quickly. 25:11.55 David As long as you're working on the right thing, right? 25:14.06 The ModGolf Podcast Mm-hmm. 25:15.01 David So our initial conversation talks about how 25:21.97 David where it is that you want to go and golf. you want to break a hundred? Do you want break 90? Do you want to break 80? Do you want to make the tour? Those are all different goals. Sure. And so the amount of work you put in set expectations, 25:33.51 David How often are you hitting? How often are you playing and practicing? And then um just talk about your game. Maybe you're shooting 100 because you're an incredible ball striker, but you four-putt every green. 25:47.43 David That's going to keep your score in a lot different place than if you're a good putter. 25:50.97 The ModGolf Podcast Right. Absolutely. 25:52.59 David And so the first part is determining what it is you want and what are the best ways to get you there. If the goal is, hey, you know what, I want to play this game until I break 80. 26:05.06 David Well, fantastic. Then we get at it And then we start breaking down the game as far as, do you hit the fairway quite often? do you hit out of bounds? Do you top all of your iron shots? Do you find yourself in a bunker and take four shots to get out? 26:17.65 David Because the score of golf is accumulation of a whole lot of different things all put together. And so I want to boil it back to, okay, where can we make the greatest gains to start with and then go from there? Because if the goal is being happier on the golf course, 26:33.66 David which I believe it is, it should be anyways. 26:35.53 The ModGolf Podcast I agree. 26:36.40 David Then if you went out and shot 110 and then you go shoot 95, well, that's going to give you a lot of happiness. And I like that. I like happy. So then now let's go do it again and let's go do it a little bit better. 26:50.17 David So then we'll have a look at your swing and, And again, figure out where you are at impact. You know, where is that impact position and what's that doing for you? And how do you go about changing it? And then honestly, we start so small, it's funny. 27:04.58 David And I say funny because with everybody, I start with corner swings, a foot behind the ball, a foot through the ball. This is exactly what you want to do through impact. And we're not moving on until you understand that and you can do it because the steps behind that are simply adding speed to that impact position. So if we can really slowly, really repetitively, very consistently, see what I did there? I just dropped that consistent word again. 27:31.33 The ModGolf Podcast you did you did 27:32.57 David If you can get to impact consistently over and over and over, then adding speed to that is the only next activity. And your body will do it. No different than you can pick up a baseball and throw it. Now, are you at a major league baseball pitcher level? 27:45.54 David No, but you can throw it with some steam and you're not even going to think about the mechanics behind it. Same thing with golf. All we're doing is throwing that ball closer to our target. So if we can work on that impact position and then just step back a little bit more speed, a little bit more speed, a little bit more speed. Oh no, we found a problem halfway back. 28:05.16 David Okay, let's work on that and make sure that we're getting to impact properly and then go further back and further back and further back. And the process of this is actually the same process that I've used over the last 30 years, fixing any problem in my own swing. 28:17.79 David So I'm fully aware of how it works and how effective it can be. So when you leave me, i want you to leave with the ability to be able to diagnose, fix, and make your own swing better on your own time. 28:31.31 David Give you the tools to be able to fix it yourself. 28:33.54 The ModGolf Podcast Mm-hmm. 28:33.68 David And by going through that same process over and over, will actually give you consistent, compressive, solid impact. yeah I had ah had a lesson with a guy just a couple of weeks ago. 28:45.46 David And he came and he's like, okay, I'm ticked off. Because my dad beat me on the golf course. And he was hitting the ball with a six iron in the simulator, 186 yards, big guy, big dude, strong guy. 28:59.70 David And I said, okay, do this, do this arrive at the ball with your shaft leaning forward. Here's how you do it. And this is all in line. This is all by, by zoom. And, uh, within about four minutes, he was hitting the ball to 15 with a six iron. 29:13.51 The ModGolf Podcast wow 29:14.52 David And he's like, okay, dad's going to be pissed. 29:20.52 David But that's the thing. it's Once you understand the right moves that you're trying to do and where you're trying to get an impact, again, it's very simple. 29:28.99 The ModGolf Podcast Nice, nice. Well, I was just about to ask you a follow-up question of of providing an example, a testimonial of of someone that's gone from, and you gave a great example there, but I'd like to hear one. I'm sure you've got dozens, if not hundreds of examples of, let's say someone that was completely lost. like we're talking almost like Charles Barkley golf swing loss that you've managed to bring them back from the abyss. So they're able to not give up golf and actually enjoy it and be, as you put it, have some fun and be happy because that is the key element, no matter what your level is, is ah to enjoy it. That's what it's all about. Enjoyment. 30:02.68 David The most dedicated people, the most frustrated people, the most annoyed people in golf are the people who hit the S word. 30:13.85 David And you know the word I'm thinking of. It's the shanks. 30:16.80 The ModGolf Podcast It is. 30:16.99 David Yes, I said it. I said it. 30:17.91 The ModGolf Podcast Yeah, you did like Voldemort, right? 30:18.43 David It's the shanks. 30:20.15 The ModGolf Podcast With a Harry Potter. Do you say it out loud? Do you dare? 30:23.01 David I know and I choose to because I know the solution to it. But if I didn't know the solution to it, I think I would probably do the Voldemort thing. 30:27.35 The ModGolf Podcast All right. 30:31.58 David Yeah, I don't want to whisper the name. 30:31.97 The ModGolf Podcast Yeah. Now does the best thing have anything to do with it? Is that tied into being overly humpy by any chance? 30:38.06 David It can be, but isn't necessarily. So that's where going back to the ball first is the most important. So this guy came in. He was on the verge of quitting golf, and it's because of the shanks. 30:50.14 The ModGolf Podcast Right. 30:51.93 David He was hitting eight to 10 shanks around, which, Ooh, Oh man. Like you just, you can't get over that. You're standing at a hundred yards. You finally hit it down the fairway. You're hitting into a par five looking, Hey, maybe I can make a birdie here. And you shank it off into the woods. 31:07.08 David That never feels good. 31:10.02 David So the first thing we did with him is cure the shanks. Now since then, I've since launched a shanks specific course. It is a mini course because the fix to the shanks is so easy. Just go do it and then you'll never have to worry about them again. 31:27.40 David But if you go back to the ball, what's happening in the ball? 31:30.97 David Well, the the the hosel which is where the shank comes from that little curvy part from the face to the shaft is really far on the heel of the golf club okay towards your body so if i remove the shanks word and take it back to simplicity what's happening at the ball well you're hitting it too far on the heel the ball is hitting the club where the club is too far forward okay it's too far away from you okay well now 31:40.04 The ModGolf Podcast Mm-hmm. 31:53.23 David Now we say, oh, well, if it's too far away from me, that's an easy fix. I bring it back towards me. Okay, that's a start. You have to start by understanding in your mind what you actually have to do. So if the ball is too, if the club is coming closer to you, you're not going to hit the hosel. 32:07.49 David You can't because it's closer to you. it's not going to It's not going to hit the curvy part. 32:12.76 The ModGolf Podcast Yes. 32:13.25 David And so we start by moving ourselves away from the ball and lining up the ball on the toe. So while you're learning, I want you to try to hit the toe. Okay. Well, anyways, so we go through this whole process and then we go through the mechanics of, of specifically his swing of how, there's really only two causes to the shanks. 32:32.79 David One, you're correct is getting your hips in the way in a humpy style motion. The other has to do with your takeaway. If you start taking it away where your hands are moving away from the ball, very common, very common. It's like the first six, not even eight, six inches. the first three inches of the golf swing screw up so many swings because you set up like, okay, I'm going to hit it like this. And then in the first three inches, you change everything. 32:57.66 David And then the rest of the swing is just a follow through of what you did in the first three inches. 33:00.88 The ModGolf Podcast Right, right. 33:02.52 David oftentimes that's the cause. But anyways we went through and we fixed his shanks and I had the privilege of going out and playing in person with him later on. And it was, it was just wonderful to see because after you cure the shanks, okay, then the golfer can actually look at their golf swing and like, Oh, Hey, I can see past that. Now I want to learn how to X, Y, Z, shoot a lower score, hit a draw, you know, be able to hit a punch shot, whatever. 33:29.37 David But when you're so afraid of shanking the ball, you, you can't even go out and play. It's not even fun to go play. 33:35.21 The ModGolf Podcast Yeah. 33:35.76 David I've struggled with that before. I've struggled with yips before in my career. And it gets to the point where it's not even fun to go play until you can get past that feeling, that feeling of helplessness. 33:48.40 David So all we're doing is giving people hope on the golf course. But yeah, once you can give hope and once you can get past that big problem, well, then we can start looking at how to play golf instead of just how to hit the golf ball. 34:02.19 The ModGolf Podcast Yeah, yeah. Well, i can I can personally relate to the S situation about five, It was just before COVID. And here in Vancouver, there's a local pitch and putt course that I go up to in the mornings and play. And I've shot a lot of video up there. 34:16.92 The ModGolf Podcast And it's a great way to introduce people to the gateway people that haven't played the game before. So And I had the shanks when I was playing by myself. And I had one day that it was so bad that it was eight or nine or every single shot was that I was almost crying. 34:35.14 The ModGolf Podcast A grown man by myself at 7:30 in the morning. 34:38.77 The ModGolf Podcast And by the 13th hole I think I had shanked like five in a row that I left. And I was just thinking, I love golf so much. 34:44.92 David Yep. 34:47.28 The ModGolf Podcast Why does golf not love me? 34:49.92 David Yep. And you're exactly right. 34:51.06 David And girls say guys don't have emotions. Oh, we have emotions. We hit three shanks in a row. You'll see some emotions. Yeah. 34:58.72 The ModGolf Podcast Yes, but knocking on some wood here that hopefully the S's are behind me. Every once in a while it still comes out, but rarely, rarely. 35:10.51 The ModGolf Podcast But yes, that was the definite low point where i was I was so lost that, yes, I was reduced to tears on the golf course as a grown man. It was it was not pretty. Not pretty. 35:20.41 David And I think if you've played the game any length of time, you've been there. And those are those are my people, okay? 35:26.96 David People they want to love the game, but they just don't. And so that's where I'm bringing fun back in. It does have to do with choosing to have fun, but it's even more understanding where you're hitting it, why you're hitting it there and how to fix it. 35:41.85 The ModGolf Podcast Nice. 35:41.88 David So if I can give you those tools, then you're just going to have more fun in life with golf. And so that's, that's my mission. That's where I'm trying to go with it. We'll see how it goes. 35:54.00 The ModGolf Podcast Absolutely. Absolutely. Well, as we finish up here, David, I do know also you're really expanding your reach and content creation on social media, both on YouTube and Instagram, so especially, I don't know, perhaps on TikTok also, and loving the content that you're creating there because yeah, your your energy and your ah the the fun side of you definitely comes out. 36:14.51 The ModGolf Podcast And one that I just saw this morning when I was looking at your Instagram was, Why don't you to talk about this a little bit? We were discussing this off camera before we started, but I saw you hitting this ridiculously small club that almost looked like a toy that you would actually get at a kid's store that would fall under a vending machine. 36:30.31 The ModGolf Podcast So talk about a lot of content and we'll do even more. 36:34.69 The ModGolf Podcast We'll so show some visuals on the YouTube channel. Once again, I encourage everybody, our listeners to become viewers over there. But let's use that as an example because you're having some fun with this. 36:43.89 David OK. 36:44.74 The ModGolf Podcast It's very compelling. So yeah, go for it. 36:48.14 David So I picked up a the world's smallest driver and 7-iron. Now, they are training clubs. 36:55.17 The ModGolf Podcast Okay. 36:55.26 David They're intended to be training clubs, but they're the length and weight of the driver. 36:57.48 The ModGolf Podcast Right. 37:00.96 David But the head is the size of a golf ball. It's super tiny. Okay. And then the iron, you want to fix shanks, use this thing. The iron is again, the width of the golf ball. 37:08.59 The ModGolf Podcast Right. 37:11.47 David So if you want to, you have to hit the center of the club. 37:14.95 David So it really helps to work on your ball striking. But I figured, Hey, yeah, it's one thing to train with these things or to hit them, but what about playing some matches with these things? 37:26.01 David I'm right now as at the recording of this particular podcast, I am, I am diving deeply into the world of YouTube golf and entertainment style golf. And I like to put a fun twist to things and make things a little bit different. And so, um you know, for, for better golfers, we're going to do two on two, you know, scramble match play. 37:46.33 David But i don't just want to have matches with good golfers. I want to have matches with everybody. And so depending on the skill level the player, I'm going to play them where I'm only using that driver and that seven iron, uh, against, you know, them with their, their full set just to, you know, it's levelling the playing the field, but the whole point of it isn't so much the competition as it is the camaraderie, the fun, the telling the story of the people that you're playing with and, 37:59.85 The ModGolf Podcast Right. 38:13.36 David And the stories of life because life and golf go so great together. And one of the beautiful things about golf is that as soon as two people stand on the tee box together, it does not matter what their background is. It does not matter their success in business or in life or in politics or in real estate development. 38:29.44 David how well can you hit that gosh darn little white golf ball? And it's like the great equalizer of life. so I'm going to bring some of that storytelling and some of that match play fun into YouTube golf. 38:40.12 David And who knows, maybe you'll be featured in one of these things shortly. 38:43.97 The ModGolf Podcast Well, I think the story is writing itself here. I think to really level the playing field, you need to get a left-handed teeny tiny driver. And then we can go head to head. I might stand a chance against you then, but we'll see. I would absolutely love to do that. I think that would be that would be great fun. 39:02.32 The ModGolf Podcast Yeah, we never know where the future will take us. And this episode, as I mentioned, is the launch episode, episode one of our season 18. 39:11.69 The ModGolf Podcast So it's launched. You're listening to it now. 39:15.10 David Congratulations to that, by the way, 18 seasons of doing anything in life is commendable. Talking to golf people about golf stuff. Hey, way to go. 39:25.13 The ModGolf Podcast Well, thank you. 39:25.57 David Well done. 39:25.57 The ModGolf Podcast I appreciate that. That C word again, it's about consistency. There we go. 39:29.05 David You bet. 39:29.22 The ModGolf Podcast Trying to be as consistent as possible and keep going. And I went back a little while ago and listened to the very first one and thought, oh my God, who's that scared person that's never had a microphone in front of them that doesn't even know how to make a podcast. But as they say, if you don't improve, if I sound the same after 200 episodes, then that's on me. If I still suck as much as I did back then, then... Just like with golf, right? 39:53.62 The ModGolf Podcast It's like you've got to not only improve, but you have to have a plan and you've got to put it in place and and you've got to be consistent and keep it simple and focused. There, i get how did i do there? I used the S word, the C word, and the and the F word. 40:02.90 David Yeah. Hey, that's fantastic. 40:05.94 The ModGolf Podcast There there we go. All of them. Focus, consistency, and simplicity. 40:09.34 David Fantastic. 40:10.76 The ModGolf Podcast There we go. 40:12.01 David Beautiful. Hey, you summed it up perfectly. Work on the right stuff and you get better at it. 40:13.97 The ModGolf Podcast All right. Well, I think there's the mic drop moment right there. So rather than this going off the rails, why don't we leave it at that? So Mr. David Buck, who's the CEO of Big Swing Kings, I can spend another hour... 40:29.34 David Hey, thanks so much for having me on here. Appreciate it. And yeah, let's go get better at golf. 40:35.82 The ModGolf Podcast Absolutely. So as I will keep all the or put in the show notes all the links to Big Swing Kings and where you can find David on the social medias, especially YouTube and Instagram. 40:47.91 The ModGolf Podcast And I also strongly encourage you to join us on... our YouTube channel for what we're about to record. And here's the little incentive. The bait is I'm about to get roasted with my 16 handicap golf swing by Mr. David Buck. 41:02.92 The ModGolf Podcast So, so yes, I'm going to have to actually grow a thick skin in the next 10 minutes. So I don't cry when I'm doing that. Like I did when I was shanking the ball there six years ago and we're going to have some fun over there. So, Hey, David, thanks so much for joining us today in the ModGolf Podcast. 41:15.32 The ModGolf Podcast And I look forward to seeing you on YouTube. 41:16.03 David You're welcome. 41:19.21 David Thanks so much.
