4 - GBA Podcast === [00:00:00] Tiffany: Hey everyone. Welcome back to 12 days of GBA. Today's day four, and we're talking about the GBA podcast, how it started and why it's a member benefit amplifier. [00:00:14] ryan: The show that began as a wild idea from Class four of GBA's Emerging Leaders Program. It's me and Tiffany. And some others. We were in the middle of COVID trying to launch something new. GBA's first ever podcast. [00:00:28] Tiffany: And we were trying to come up with what should our first content be, and we realized we actually had the secret weapon. Joel GBA's executive director, had just recorded a series where he interviewed business leaders about how they were navigating the pandemic. We decided to use Joel's audio from those interviews as our first content just to get something going. [00:00:53] ryan: So the podcast was born out of necessity, creativity, and a little bit of, "let's see what happens", and "let's see if we can do [00:01:00] this." From the first episodes, we built a show that's now a regular part of GBA's member experience. [00:01:06] Tiffany: And here's the twist for member benefits. The podcast is free to the world, but you GBA members get access to the cool stuff where we link and talk about the resources, guides, and tools that help you get more out of every episode. [00:01:26] ryan: That's actually super awesome hearing you say it that way. What makes podcast special for members isn't just the stories, it's the access. Something I never really considered. When we mention a resource, a best practice or a tool, members can actually go grab it, use it, and share it inside their firms. [00:01:44] Tiffany: Yeah, and Ryan, I just realized we're doing a podcast about a podcast. [00:01:50] ryan: That's like inception right there. [00:01:53] Tiffany: It is, but honestly, this has been a super fun ad for members [00:02:00] and we have fun doing it. We get a lot of feedback on how people enjoy listening to it and getting a little bit of extra content. So I, I think, I think it's kind of fun. What do you think? [00:02:14] ryan: Absolutely. Yeah, and I hadn't really considered what you just put here for me to read to this audience today until you did it. I think you're right. Having us introduce these things is great, but they're the ones that get the full access to those documents and can go in there and dig a little bit deeper. [00:02:30] Great resource. [00:02:32] Tiffany: Exactly. Basically the public gets the conversation, but members get the playbook. If we talk about a contract clause, a report insert, or a training guide, members get to log in, download that content, and get a lot more info. [00:02:49] ryan: And it's not just about documents, it's about connection. Members can join committees, attend webinars, and be part of the community that's shaping the industry. I. [00:02:58] Tiffany: plus it's practical. You get [00:03:00] to listen to an episode, grab the resource and put it to work on Monday morning or Tuesday or Wednesday or whenever. [00:03:07] ryan: And let's be honest, sometimes the best ideas come from hearing how someone else solved a problem. So case Histories, great series for that. Members get to take those ideas and run with them with all the tools and support GBA has to offer. [00:03:22] Tiffany: Perfect. All right, so Ryan, I'm all about different learning styles, and you and I talk about this. Some people wanna listen, some wanna read, some wanna discuss, and honestly, the best teams use all three. That's why I love how GBA's case histories and podcast episodes work together. If you're planning a lunch and learn or a technical chat, you can send out the PDF of the case history and our podcast episode ahead of time. Let your team pick how they wanna prep. They can read, listen, or both. [00:03:57] ryan: It is a simple way to make learning more accessible [00:04:00] and engaging. Some folks will dive into the technical details in the PDF. Others will get the big picture from the episode and some will do both and come ready with questions. [00:04:09] Tiffany: Exactly. It's about meeting people where they are and making sure everyone gets the most outta the material. So next time you're planning a training, a team huddle, or just wanna spark a good conversation, remember the podcast and the member resource are designed to work together. Use them, however fits your team best. [00:04:28] ryan: Quick origin. Shout out. The podcast came out of Emerging Leaders Class four, and it's carried on today by Tiffany, Liz, Craig Hill, Tim Rodriguez, Abi Corbett, and yours truly, Ryan White with a rotating cast of generous guests from across the GBA community. [00:04:47] Tiffany: And we also wanna thank Joel for the original interviews he did that gave us our launchpad. Plus a big nod to the GBA committees who keep feeding us topics and resources. Every time you hear us say, we'll link [00:05:00] that it's often a committee deliverable that turned into useful tools. [00:05:07] ryan: All right, Tiffany, I don't think this would be the, the best form of podcast about a podcast if we didn't talk about some of the different series that we've had on here. You mentioned the early panel discussions, and then some of our early content involved interviews Joel did with previous keynote speakers at GBA conferences. [00:05:27] We called that Encore Performances. There was probably 11 or 12 different episodes with that. What's been your favorite? We've had a bunch of other series since then. What do you like and why? [00:05:39] Tiffany: I did love Encore performances. I thought that was awesome. Hearing Joel talk to leaders that he's met all around the world, hear their take on different things, that was one of my favorite. And then a couple of those actually led to people that we, you and I interviewed later, so that was one of my favorites. [00:05:59] But. [00:06:00] Honestly, if we're talking just having fun, like you and I on the mic recording, I had a blast the first time I ever did a case history because the person I was interviewing didn't necessarily want their voice out there. So we got to play with some editing tools, you know, we got to, um, his voice. And I learned so much on that episode by interviewing him. [00:06:26] That was one of my favorites. [00:06:28] ryan: Awesome. Yeah, I'm biased, but the Geo Heroes series has been awesome. Working with Guy on those and then getting to meet some of those guests has been great as well. I learned so much about people that I knew very little about. I knew them as GBA famous, I guess, but they're actually cool people. [00:06:46] So that was fun. And just throw out a couple others. Joel's been putting the first word out on the podcast, which I think has been great. For those of you who don't catch that on video. It's easy to listen to on audio at the first of every month. And then [00:07:00] also the Business management best practices, is that what we called it, [00:07:04] Tiffany: Yeah. [00:07:06] ryan: that series, [00:07:08] Tiffany: Actually no, we just called it management best [00:07:10] ryan: management Best Practices. [00:07:12] Okay. That had some good stuff as well. That was a short and sweet series, but. Also full of good stuff, so I'm not sure if everybody knows about all these great things we have on here and they're still available. [00:07:26] Tiffany: Yeah. Another one of my favorites when we went through the emerging leaders class and we were coming up with this project. Our class couldn't just do anything small. We had to take on two projects. So we also, were big part of launching the DEI committee at the time, and since we helped launch that, we also did a whole, I think it was three part series on diversity, equity, and inclusion. [00:07:51] So there's a whole podcast series on that as well with some really good interviews. [00:07:56] So Ryan, you're the chair now. I was the chair [00:08:00] before. You know, as the new chair, you have to of course, make everything better than I did. [00:08:04] So what's next? What's up and coming? [00:08:08] ryan: So we started by figuring out how much we did while you were chair and we doubled or tripled it, then we decided to take on video as well. And by we, I mean Tim Rodriguez of course, um, I take credit 'cause he is on our committee, but he does all the work. Thinking about how we can use that to connect with not just GBA members, but also folks outside the industry, whether that's, STEM related folks or people who know very little about what the geoprofessions are. So that's the next thing I think, is more video continuing with the audio. [00:08:45] The case history series has been super popular, so we're, we're keeping that going. There will be a series coming out about a geotechnical startup and some of the challenges they had getting started, what GBA tools they've used to help them. [00:09:00] Uh, possibly talking to other folks who've also started companies. [00:09:03] So it's a little teaser. [00:09:06] Tiffany: Ooh. Excited about that one. And yes, you guys have already crushed me by doing the videos, but that's okay. Always getting better. I love it. All right, that's day four. The GBA podcast. Public stories with member grade tools behind them. [00:09:24] ryan: Listen publicly, but then take advantage of your member access and get all those documents directly from the website. [00:09:32] Tiffany: Thanks, Ryan, and remember, go to gbapodcast.com for episodes. Then also log into the GBA member portal to download what we're talking about. [00:09:43] ryan: Small changes, big payoff. See you tomorrow. [00:09:47] Tiffany: Bye. [00:09:48] ryan: Bye.
