We're a few months in and you're ten years in, right? For your for your out. Yeah. Yeah. So we're actually so our foundation was founded in 2015. And we are going to be having our 11th annual golf tournament this year. And that's really kind of been the epicenter of, of how we bring together people for our work. 00:01:14:04 - 00:01:32:02 Unknown And I'm excited to be here with you guys to chat a little bit about what we do, how we do it, and all the great people that have made it, made it possible. So why don't you tell us why you started? Tell us the history of the family and what was going on. And what made you decide to do this foundation? 00:01:32:03 - 00:01:56:21 Unknown Yeah, I mean, you know, in our family, unfortunately, both my brother and my father were impacted by by cancer. My brother Joe with trova, who was a co-founder of Play Forward 518. He is he's a great young man. He was diagnosed with pediatric cancer and oh seven he's been in remission for for many, many years since he's doing phenomenal. 00:01:56:22 - 00:02:31:19 Unknown Happily married a child himself and my father was a was a two time cancer individual that had cancer twice. He had a very long battle, multiple myeloma. He unfortunately passed in 2018. But with that, really what we experienced as a family was when my brother was first diagnosed, people would just come together. We at that time we all lived in Rotterdam, we all went to Mahoney's in high school, and people just rallied around my brother and our family. 00:02:31:20 - 00:02:52:27 Unknown And it happened in so many unconventional and unexpected ways. I mean, go to the front door at night. There's a there's a dinner. There are, you know, his friends knew that, that he was, you know, he had a lot going on. And so they pooled their money together and got him a portable PlayStation listed. He could connect with them while he was sick. 00:02:52:27 - 00:03:10:09 Unknown And my brother also had a make a wish. We could talk about that in a little bit, but all these things kind of came together and we were just overwhelmed by the outpouring of support that as we move through this. And we got older and Joe was on the other side of it. My dad was dealing with it. 00:03:10:10 - 00:03:42:11 Unknown You know, we said as a family, we have to we want to be able to pay it forward. And therefore when you look at our name, play it forward, play on words forward, spelled with an E for golf in the 518. Because, you know, our mission is simple, that we look to bring together individuals, organizations, businesses that support us to support families and children that are going through hardship throughout our throughout our area. 00:03:42:11 - 00:04:05:23 Unknown And at the core of everything that we do is the concept of play is the concept of diversion. And so that's really the 30,000ft view of how we came about with this. So that's really awesome. That's really awesome. Knowing that the Make-A-Wish I know they have age limitations in the in the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Do you guys as a group, your foundation, do you guys have age caps as well? 00:04:05:25 - 00:04:22:25 Unknown Do you try to keep it based to children? So what we do is and that's a really important question about kind of what we do with the funds and how we support it. So we've been really fortunate that in our ten tournaments that we've held in different fundraisers that we've raised and given away over $250,000 in terms of support. 00:04:23:01 - 00:04:50:04 Unknown But how we in truthfully, that's not us. That is everybody that's included. For folks that come to our tournament, they will often hear us say like we are a family, not the family, but you play it forward 518 family and anyone that we come in contact with, anyone that supports in any given way, I mean, listen, at the end of this, you know, at the end of this talk with with us. 00:04:50:05 - 00:05:10:02 Unknown I mean, we consider you guys part of the play forward 518 family. And that's an important piece of how we go about it. But what we do with the funds that are raised is we support local organizations, local outlets that are on the front line supporting children and families. So we as a group are not hosting something of that nature. 00:05:10:02 - 00:05:31:11 Unknown We are doing things like since our inception, we have funded over nine Make-A-Wish. We work directly with them to fund a wish for a local child. We have a direct connection with the Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center. We worked hand in hand with what they call a child life specialist that's there as a social worker to work with families, and they let us know, what do the kids need, what's going on? 00:05:31:11 - 00:05:57:23 Unknown So we'll do things like Halloween baskets. Or we have supplied the specifically the cancer floor and the cancer treatment area, multiple gaming systems and things of that nature. And then we also have we've done a lot of work in recent years with the team up at double H, so we provided some great support for them for their summer and winter camps, whether it be supplies or things of that nature. 00:05:57:23 - 00:06:25:10 Unknown So we as a we as an organization, are really about bringing people together, raising funds and then supporting those frontline organizations that are doing the work. But that's a really good question on your part, and thanks for letting me make that distinction. For those of people at home that don't know what double each hole in the Woods Ranch is is founded by Paul Newman, if I'm not mistaken, it's a local place where he takes children for the most part and that have been stricken with different, you know, afflictions. 00:06:25:10 - 00:06:49:08 Unknown And and he's given them a kind of like a diversion, like you said. Yeah. I mean, they're they're an amazing organization. We've known of them for many years. And they did a lot of work at the Children's Hospital when my brother was there as an inpatient. And while Joe did not participate directly, that organization does unbelievable work. I mean, located in the Adirondacks, the hole in the woods organization, there's an affiliation of camps around the country. 00:06:49:08 - 00:07:16:08 Unknown And to your point, as you said, young children that are going through illness and things of that nature, they give them an amazing week or time of fun, whether it be summer or winter. And just the work that they do is amazing. And I think that's a big part of it, too, that we've learned in what we've done is like, there's so many causes out there, there's so many things where people need support, and we're really grateful that people choose to to support the work that we're doing. 00:07:16:08 - 00:07:36:09 Unknown And because there's a lot of there's a lot of causes out there and we don't take that for granted. I think it's really interesting that despite the fact that your family specifically was dealing with cancer, that you still diversify, like you're not just giving funds for cancer research or giving funds for children with cancer, you're diversifying across the capital district. 00:07:36:10 - 00:07:57:03 Unknown And I think that's awesome because like you said, there's so many different organizations that could use your help. And the fact that you're able to say, okay, we're not just going to focus on cancer is really neat. Yeah, yeah, it's really important when we when we talk to people and again, we understand the work that they're doing in the hard work that they're doing on the front lines and supporting whatever cause it is. 00:07:57:04 - 00:08:29:21 Unknown And we're really about, as I said, trying to be able to provide some level of a tangible asset or a tangible experience that's going to to really help, you know, I'm an alma mater of Siena College. So are my brother and my sister. My brother was a team manager on the basketball team when he was there. And one of the things that we have done through the help of Siena College and Siena Athletics, and a big thank you to their team and their staff to CNN men's basketball team, is we have an honorary captain program. 00:08:29:21 - 00:08:46:27 Unknown So if you're down at the MVP arena at any point and you see before the game, we will we will have a patient that is from the Children's Hospital at Albany Met, and they will serve as the honorary captain. So what happens is they are introduced in front of the whole entire arena. They have an honorary captain shirt. 00:08:46:28 - 00:09:07:29 Unknown They have they present the game ball to the referees. And again they get a night out at the arena. They're they're given a nice seat courtside. And again, that's something that just came from a natural conversation with Siena a little over nine years ago. And here we are. And since then we've eclipsed 100 honorary captains that have been part of that experience. 00:09:08:06 - 00:09:31:04 Unknown So, you know, those are just different things that have kind of come out of it. So can you tell us a little bit about your brother's Make-A-Wish and what that was and what that trip was? Yeah, yeah. And I know, you know, Joe was unable to to be here and to converse with you guys. We usually travel in packs and I so I appreciate it. 00:09:31:04 - 00:09:51:10 Unknown So I'll do the best to speak on his behalf. But you know, when Joe was diagnosed, he was a high school. He was in high school. He was a he played a lot of sports just as I did. He was a few years younger than me, and I was actually diagnosed during basketball season. And the way that they identified, you know, his cancer was he was having some extreme leg pain. 00:09:51:10 - 00:10:12:17 Unknown And my brother had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. And what happened is when they did the X-ray and they did the scans, they pretty much saw that his leg had the cancer, had eaten his leg away to be almost like Swiss cheese in a way. So he stepped away from basketball. He went through very intense chemotherapy. But the one thing that Joe could do was, was, was play golf. 00:10:12:17 - 00:10:39:28 Unknown And, you know, Joe, I picked up golf a little bit later in life towards the end of my high school career, and Joe picked it up a lot earlier, and he was just really all about it. And we would that was the one thing that he could still do while he was going through treatments was play golf. So, you know, in fact, Joe, Joe has a hole in one to his name, and he carded that hole in one Capitol Hills in the middle of his treatment. 00:10:39:29 - 00:11:05:06 Unknown Oh, wow. Yeah. Awesome. And he and so what happened is, is when he was approached by Make-A-Wish, when he was in the hospital again, Make-A-Wish gave him something to look forward to. And the thing with Make-A-Wish is, and, you know, it's not it is for children facing, you know, illness, hardship, life threatening things. And it gave him an opportunity to like, hey, this is something look forward to when I'm when I'm better. 00:11:05:06 - 00:11:26:21 Unknown So Joe actually went on his Make-A-Wish when he was done with his treatments. And there was a lot of different options. But again, he was really into it. He talked about potentially, you know, meeting a professional golfer or something to that degree. And what he settled on was, I want to go play a professional course. And what he ended up deciding on doing was he wanted to he wanted to go to TPC Sawgrass. 00:11:26:23 - 00:11:44:19 Unknown And so it was an amazing experience. He went, I was I was allowed the opportunity to go with him, my sister as well, my, my father and mother, we traveled down there. And I mean, they they treated Joe like the champ that he is and well deserving. And they let us go out. We played we had a four caddy. 00:11:44:25 - 00:12:03:01 Unknown You know, they gave us the whole history of the course, everything. And, you know, they brought us to the 17th. They set us up from where the pros do. And I got to give credit to Joe. You know, he stuck it about 15ft from the pit. Wow. Had a tap in, had a tap in par on 17. And they've been and really that was that. 00:12:03:04 - 00:12:24:00 Unknown We came back from that experience and we were just so overwhelmed that like hey, somebody somebody supported this. Somebody made this happen. And Joe would go out and he would be asked to maybe speak at an event to thank people, or he would go do certain things as part of being an ambassador for that. And that's really what became that motivation to to do that. 00:12:24:01 - 00:12:42:17 Unknown That's really cool. And what what a course to play. Yeah. And not only to have a hole in one locally, but just sticking on 17. Those are great. And I can say it because he's not here with me. I mean, you know, we battled over the years. And listen he may he may have the upper edge on me right now with his golf game. 00:12:42:17 - 00:13:01:22 Unknown But we've been known to we've been known to have some, some good head to head battles with each other. So at a course now I gotta ask whether you're handicaps. Well, I mean, I'm, I'm going to let mine have an asterisk on it right now because because I've been on a little bit of a hiatus as being the father of six year old twins and I. 00:13:01:28 - 00:13:20:01 Unknown Okay, so I used to play myself a lot of golf. And, you know, I don't play as much as I used to, so I'm not going to disclose what my handicap is now because it's not official. But, you know, Joe, certainly if I had to guess, Joe's hovering and, you know, Joe's hovering down in the five to to seven area now. 00:13:20:04 - 00:13:39:26 Unknown Yeah, he he he can play. He can play. But also again like, we know there's a lot better players out there. We go out there to have fun. Yeah. Yeah. So what are some of the courses that you guys like or he likes to play locally and what. Yeah I mean so so Joe and I are Joe and I oh let's see I mean we're we're a huge fit. 00:13:39:28 - 00:14:01:22 Unknown We love playing national. We have the opportunity to play in a couple, to play in a couple scrambles and tournaments up there. They do an unbelievable job. You know, we actually just participated in a tournament there recently that also gave us motivation as to to want to give back. As the New York State laborers, they do an amazing job with their tournament up there. 00:14:01:24 - 00:14:22:12 Unknown You know, we got national, we got Orchard Creek. You know, obviously, to be to be perfectly honest, for my brother and I, I can say over time, like if there's a course we'll play it, you know, we have a lot of fun. I was gonna say we can understand that. Yeah. You know, I think I think the big thing is, is that we take the game serious, we enjoy the game. 00:14:22:12 - 00:14:43:04 Unknown But we also have learned that there's more to life than the game. So, yeah, you all learned that a much earlier time probably than you wanted to. Yeah. I mean, you know I yeah well that too, and I think the other part of it is, I mean, you know, listen, as much as we would love it. You know, I go out and play, I got to go to work the next day, guys. 00:14:43:05 - 00:15:09:29 Unknown All right. It's not going to pay the bills, so I may I may. Yeah, exactly. We can all wish. But but I got to go to work. I'm not I'm not making a living out there on the course. So. All right so let's talk about where you hold this event and what course you're on. Yeah. So we hold this event at Van Patten Golf Course a big shout out to them a big shout out to Lance, the ownership of Van Patten, his whole entire team from the pro shop to the hospitality side to the grounds. 00:15:09:29 - 00:15:29:16 Unknown We've been there since day one. How we ended up there is that it's a course that my brother and I played in a in a league many, many years and they have from day one been extremely supportive of us in our tournament. So we typically are going to be every third Thursday of August. We've kind of held it in the same time. 00:15:29:16 - 00:15:51:00 Unknown We started our tournament on 18 holes the size that it's grown to. We now use all 27. And you know, they've been phenomenal. They they do a great job from from the initial setup all the way through. And they've been very supportive of what we're doing over the years. So I'm not surprised because that's a beautiful course. And it's a 27 hole course that has its challenges. 00:15:51:00 - 00:16:11:00 Unknown But I think it's great that they support not only putting you on a team, but putting you on all 27 holes. Yeah. That's amazing. Yeah, they've been very open to it. The staff, you know, we I kind of feel like every year when we go back there it's a little bit of a it's a little bit of reunion with the staff that are there, and they're there to help us and serve us throughout their great to our volunteers. 00:16:11:00 - 00:16:33:00 Unknown They're great to the golfers, they're great to everybody involved. So we can't say enough good things about them. They they run a great operation. So we're really fortunate to be able to go there. It sounds like you're relatively maxed out on the course itself, but as far as you know, sponsorship, I'm sure he would tell you and you know, any course, you know, any financial person is going to tell you the same thing. 00:16:33:04 - 00:16:51:22 Unknown You know, there's there's not a cap on that. The more money they can get towards their foundation, the better. So if you can give him a call and support them, that would be great. Van Patten obviously has done a great job supporting you guys. But any greater ambitions as far as you know, making this a two time a year thing or something like that. 00:16:51:23 - 00:17:11:13 Unknown Have you have any thoughts about you know you know it's interesting. So we have done other things throughout the year in terms of of play it forward. We've done some we've done some connections with some local restaurants or bars and establishments of really getting people together, you know, just for whether it's a taproom takeover or a dine to donate. 00:17:11:14 - 00:17:39:23 Unknown Because that, again, is really what we're doing, is facilitating a group of people coming together in terms of the golf side of it. To your point, you know, yeah, we've been we've been maxed out. We're really fortunate for that. And I think that that speaks to, as I said earlier, that play it forward 518 family. So you know, I'd say the past my brother and I were taking a look the other day in preparation, I'd say in the past 5 to 7 years or go back about seven years, maybe even five. 00:17:39:28 - 00:18:03:22 Unknown We have about a 90 to 95% retention rate of people that come back every single year. And it's great. It's really great. I mean, yeah, there's people that may they may not come for vacation purposes or whatever else. But the also thing, the thing that we've been able to do is, is that there's a few people that in particular that I think it's kind of great and it tells the story. 00:18:03:22 - 00:18:22:08 Unknown So we, as I mentioned, have supported some Make-A-Wish is along the way. You know, the first Make-A-Wish that we ever supported was a young man, Tommy Volcano. And now he's a he's a grown adult and Tommy's an amazing guy. He's in television production. His Make-A-Wish was to go to see to the NFL Pro Bowl. And so Tommy came. 00:18:22:08 - 00:18:42:05 Unknown He was honored. And right away, the next year he's there, his family's there. Like, hey, how can we help? How can we be part of this? They're they're they're having a foursome. You know, the Corsi family for the Corsi family and the Charissa family again, two amazing, amazing young men that had, you know, wishes granted. And they're part of it, too. 00:18:42:05 - 00:19:09:28 Unknown And they just come back and they're like, they're there. And I think that just speaks to how grateful we are for what it's done. But yeah, from the golf side, from the logistics side. Yeah, we're probably, you know, pretty close to being maxed out. You know, we put a lot of folks out there. But the people that play their understanding of the true mission of what's taking place that day, and we also as a group that are organizing it comprised of primarily family. 00:19:09:28 - 00:19:29:26 Unknown And then also, you know, volunteers and such. We try to do as many things as we can to make sure that the day is fun, that it's enjoyable. And, you know, we we try to control the controllable. I think that's all we can do. That was going to be my next question is like, what are some of the things you're doing during the day that make it fun? 00:19:29:27 - 00:19:46:08 Unknown Are there things on the course that you're doing? Yeah, I'm sure there's raffles and things like that. Yeah. I mean, we've been blessed with I mean, so, so first and I should also, if you guys don't mind, I'll back up for a moment to just say so, you know, play it forward. 518. It is. Yes. It's a it's a family foundation. 00:19:46:09 - 00:20:06:05 Unknown All of us. My brother, sister and I are our spouses. We all work during the day. This is this is a labor of love. Everything that we do goes back. You know, my mother is retired now, but she she helps is as well. So like I said, this is not a this is not a job for us. This is something that we do because we enjoy. 00:20:06:07 - 00:20:22:29 Unknown So a big shout out to them regarding that. And then in terms of what we do on that day, yeah, we are very blessed that we have a lot of phenomenal raffle items that we do. We have a raffle that, you know, so when you show up at the morning, you do your standard check in. We got a breakfast spread. 00:20:23:00 - 00:20:48:18 Unknown We're very fortunate for support on that. We have great raffles, you know, throughout the day. We try to keep it fun but keep it light. We got some different games going on out on the course and things of that nature, but we're really focused on we want folks to walk away feeling as though they came out. They supported something where they know where their funds are going, they're enjoying themselves and they're taking something away with them. 00:20:48:23 - 00:21:04:18 Unknown So we do a giveaway or we do a, you know, a giveaway every year. You know, whether it's been we've been doing hats for a long time or this year, we got a, you know, a great golf polo going going out this year. But we just try to we just try to switch it up every year. That's awesome. 00:21:04:21 - 00:21:23:26 Unknown I love the name of the foundation. I got to tell you real quickly why I just love the idea of, you know, if you folks at home can see the way they spelled it forward, like for in golf. But also my nephew was a Make-A-Wish recipient and he asked for a swimming pool. He was he had he had a pediatric cancer as well. 00:21:23:26 - 00:21:45:25 Unknown And he had it when he was, I think 6 or 7, he got diagnosed. He went through the whole thing and he actually plays it forward or pays it forward now a days, because any time we're actually going to one this weekend, he works for the state as a highway department guy. But he he's very big into giving back because he knows how much was given to him. 00:21:45:25 - 00:22:05:06 Unknown So if there's a charity tournament to be had, he's going to be there. He will find a way to get into a force in one way or another. We got we're going to one this weekend for a fire department, and then the following two weeks later, I think, for another fire department, one of one of which he works at and the other one his father works at. 00:22:05:06 - 00:22:22:26 Unknown And so it was really cool seeing the name, because I think another thing I did a little research on when I found out you were coming. So I have family members that live all over the country and so on and so forth, uncles and aunts and in-laws and outlaws, and we are one of the I. I'll call us the chosen area. 00:22:22:29 - 00:22:44:27 Unknown We are super, super into scrambles that are beneficial to whatever foundation. It could be a foundation. It could be a charity, it could be just a single individual or whatever that's going through a hardship or whatever. Here we have a North Feed the North Country tournament that happens up here, because some of our rural areas up here are very unfortunate. 00:22:44:29 - 00:23:03:26 Unknown You know, when when you have really harsh winters, especially with food prices being driven through the roof like they are now, it's awesome to see that. And I found out from asking all my, you know, relatives, like I said, that are all spread out all over the country. They're like four man scrambles, you know, they they're like, oh yeah, they happen occasionally, but usually the money just goes towards the course. 00:23:03:26 - 00:23:30:19 Unknown They don't do a lot with it. And to see you guys doing so much with with it for so long now is spectacular. Well and I think and that's a you know, we had this idea as I said. So we established our foundation in 2015. So that was our nonprofit. You know when we sat down and we talked about it at that time, it was my brother, my late father and I, we sat down and my dad's like, let's have a golf tournament. 00:23:30:20 - 00:23:46:12 Unknown Let's, let's have a golf tournament. Let's get people together. You guys play enough golf, you go to enough golf tournaments, we can figure it out. And I mean, I remember talking to people, I remember saying people, and there was a few people that are like another golf tournament, another golf tournament. I'm like, hey, you know what? I completely respect it, I get it. 00:23:46:14 - 00:24:05:23 Unknown And but, you know, the first year we got together, I think we were just lucky to get like 25, 25 groups. But I mean, listen, there are if there are people who have there is such a long list of people that I could go through that have been there from day one. But there's a few people in particular. 00:24:05:23 - 00:24:20:09 Unknown So, like you talk about the name, we came up with it. We had to put a face, we had to put a face to the name. A high school friend of mine who runs the Albany Art Gallery, Tony, came up with the logo. Since then, my cousin Mia Murphy, who's a phenomenal graphic designer, she's done all of our stuff for us. 00:24:20:09 - 00:24:40:03 Unknown And from day one, one of the people that helped get us get this off the ground was, you know, a great individual who's meant so much to us throughout. Gentleman by the name of Ken Raymond, who unbelievable individual. I have the pleasure of working for his organization. He met my brother through coaches versus cancer. That's how a lot of this started. 00:24:40:06 - 00:24:57:18 Unknown You know, an attorney by the name of Stephanie Henry, who was there to help us right up to make sure that we were doing it the right way. And it is it's just one of those things where it's, you know, as I talked to and as I see it now with my niece getting older, she's, you know, just turned for my daughters turning six. 00:24:57:18 - 00:25:16:13 Unknown They're now coming to this tournament. They're seeing it, their understanding it, and they're seeing that we're doing good for people. And as you said, yes, it's golf. Yes, we're getting together. But it's just a it's an opportunity to just get out there, you know, for a few hours with four people, a whole group of people put the noise outside. 00:25:16:13 - 00:25:30:06 Unknown There's so much going on in the world and stuff and just to be there. And that's we're really grateful that people take the time to do that because, as you said, we're fortunate as a region. There's a lot of those tournaments that people do it, and that's why we're so fortunate to say that we appreciate the support that we have. 00:25:30:07 - 00:25:52:26 Unknown And again, I appreciate you guys using you know what? You're what you've built here for the opportunity to talk about it. So thank you I think it's wonderful. And is there anything that you need help with now that you want to reach out and say, hey, we need help with this, is there any. Yeah. But if you're interested in learning more about what we do, we're always here to have a conversation, you know? And I think the other part of it is, is that I think, you know, we try to look at this and say, hey, you know, there was unfortunate circumstances that caused us to take this path. 00:27:04:12 - 00:27:39:03 Unknown What started 11 years ago as my brother and my father's story, which is still so instrumental in what we do. Has become a story that's so much more in the hundreds of people that we've been able to impact.
