Episode 63 — Mark 2:18–22 — New Wine, New Hearts Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s an honor to be here with you today.
Today is March 4. Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin. Slow Down Jesus is here. He’s sitting in your favorite spot, waiting for you to join Him.
You may have a million things on your mind, but for these few moments, set them aside. Relax. Calm your body. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, I’m open to You.”
As you exhale, pray: “Make my heart new.” Do this three times, then sit in silence for a few moments Read Once when John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, some people came to Jesus and asked, “Why don’t your disciples fast like John’s disciples and the Pharisees do?” Jesus replied, “Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. They can’t fast while the groom is with them. But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. “Besides, who would patch old clothing with new cloth? For the new patch would shrink and rip away from the old cloth, leaving an even bigger tear than before. “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the wine would burst the wineskins, and the wine and the skins would both be lost. New wine calls for new wineskins.”  (Mark 2:18–22, NLT) Notice What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a phrase or truth that speaks directly to you?
Hold it in your heart for a moment. Reread Hear the passage again slowly.
Be mindful of what God may be speaking to your heart right now.   Meditate People are comparing religious behavior: “Why don’t Your disciples fast like the others?” Jesus doesn’t give a rule; He gives pictures. First, a wedding. When the groom is present, it’s time to celebrate, not fast. Jesus is saying: My presence changes what’s appropriate right now. Then, cloth and wineskins. New cloth tears old fabric. New wine bursts old skins. The point: God is doing something new in and through Jesus. Old patterns and rigid expectations can’t contain it. The question shifts from, “Why aren’t You like them?” to, “Will I let my heart become soft and flexible enough to hold what Jesus is doing now?”
Take a few moments to reflect on this question:
Where is Jesus inviting me to loosen my old expectations and become “new wineskin” for His work in my life? Respond Jesus, show me where I’m clinging to old patterns.
Make my heart soft and flexible so I can receive what You’re doing now. Exercise The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits. Habit: One New Response
Today, notice one situation where you would usually react out of habit—maybe with irritation, defensiveness, or worry. In that moment, pause and pray: “Jesus, what is the new way You invite me to respond?”
Choose one small, different response as a way of making space for His “new wine.” If this daily devotional is helping you slow down and meet Jesus, would you do one quick thing for me?
