Episode 141 — Matthew 13:44–46 — The Treasure and the Pearl Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s an honor to be here with you today.
Today is May 21. Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin. Slow Down Jesus is here.
He’s sitting in your favorite spot, waiting for you to join Him. You have a million things on your mind that need your attention, but right now it’s time to be with Jesus. Set those things aside, relax, and calm your body. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it. As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, You are worth everything.” As you exhale, pray: “Let me live like it.” Do this three times, then rest in His presence.
Read “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field. “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it! (Matthew 13:44–46, NLT) Notice What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a word or phrase that catches your attention?
Hold it in your heart for a moment. Reread Hear these two parables again — and notice the one thing both men do without hesitation: they sell everything.   Meditate Two parables, one point, told from two different angles. One man stumbles onto the treasure accidentally — he wasn't looking for it, but when he finds it, he recognizes immediately what it's worth. The other is a professional seeker — he has spent his life searching for the finest pearl, and when he finally finds it, he knows. In both cases, the response is identical: everything else goes. Without grief, without regret - because what they have found is worth infinitely more than everything they are giving up. This is Jesus' picture of what it looks like to truly encounter the kingdom of God. Not a calculated trade-off where you reluctantly surrender good things for slightly better things. A joyful, wholehearted, all-in response to something recognized as surpassingly, incomparably valuable. The question this parable puts to us is not primarily about what we are willing to give up. It is about whether we have truly seen what the kingdom is worth. Because when you genuinely see it - when the reality of Jesus and His kingdom breaks through the ordinary surface of your life - the selling becomes the easy part. The joy of what you've found makes the cost feel light. Take a few moments to reflect on this question: Do I actually experience the kingdom of God as something worth everything - or has it become just one valuable thing among many in my life? Respond Jesus, You are the pearl. You are the treasure. Renew that vision in me today. Exercise The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits. Habit: Counting the Cost Joyfully Today's habit is an act of joyful surrender: identify one thing you've been reluctant to release to God - something that has been competing with the kingdom for first place in your heart -and offer it to Him today, not with gritted teeth, but with the joy of someone who has found something worth far more. It might help to start by spending a moment remembering what Jesus has actually given you — forgiveness, belonging, eternal life, the presence of the Spirit. Let the value of what you have in Him become real to you again before you make the offering. Then pray: "Lord, this has been holding too much of my heart. I offer it to You — not because I have to, but because You are worth more. You are the treasure. You are the pearl. And I choose You."
