Episode 215 — Luke 11:27–28 — Hear and Do Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s awesome to be here with you today.
Today is August 10. Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin. Slow Down We carry so much around every day — financial worries, relational stress, anxiety about the future, and the pressure to succeed.
Now is the time to set those things down for a few minutes and enjoy some time with Jesus. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it. As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, I hear your Word.” As you exhale, pray: “Help me put it into practice.” Do this three times, then rest in His presence. Read As he was speaking, a woman in the crowd called out, “God bless your mother—the womb from which you came, and the breasts that nursed you!” Jesus replied, “But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice.” (Luke 11:27–28, NLT) Notice What hits you most?
Is there a phrase that jumps out to you?
Hold that phrase gently before the Lord. Reread Hear this passage again — and notice what Jesus says about who is more blessed. Meditate A woman in the crowd calls out a blessing over Jesus's mother. It's a beautiful sentiment — an expression of honor and admiration. Mary was indeed blessed among women. But Jesus gently redirects her. "Even more blessed," He says, "are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice." Notice what He doesn't say. He doesn't say blessed are those who hear the word of God. Hearing alone isn't enough. He says hear and put it into practice. This is a small passage — just two verses — but it carries one of the most important truths in the Gospels. The blessing Jesus offers isn't reserved for those with the right family connections, the right religious credentials, or the right spiritual heritage. It's available to everyone who does two things: hears and does. James echoes this in his letter: "Don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves." We live in a world saturated with Christian content — podcasts, books, sermons, devotionals. It's possible to consume enormous amounts of God's word and still not be changed by it. Hearing without doing creates a kind of spiritual callus — we become familiar with truth without being transformed by it. The blessed life Jesus describes is not a life of perfect performance. It's a life of faithful response. You hear something from God — and you do it. You receive a prompting — and you act on it. You sense a conviction — and you follow it. Take a few moments to reflect on this question: What has God been saying to me lately that I have heard but not yet done? Respond Jesus, I don't just want to hear Your words — I want to live them. Show me the gap between what I know and what I do. And give me the courage and the grace to close it today. Exercise The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits. Habit: Hear and Do Today's habit is an act of faithful response: identify one specific thing God has been saying to you that you've been hearing but not doing. It might be a conviction that keeps surfacing. It might be a prompting to reach out to someone. It might be a step of obedience you've been putting off. It might be something from a recent sermon, a passage of Scripture, or a quiet moment with God that you nodded at — and then moved on from without acting. Write it down. Be specific. Then ask yourself: Why haven't I done this yet? Is it fear? Inconvenience? Doubt? Procrastination? Now bring it to Jesus and pray: "Jesus, I've been hearing _________________. I know this is from You. But I haven't done it yet. I'm choosing today to respond. Give me the courage to take the next step — not because I feel ready, but because You said it and I trust You." Then do it. Today. Not tomorrow. Not when you feel more prepared. Today. I have two asks of you before you go, could you please share this podcast with one person today and check out the review of this podcast on Elevate Society? That’s your two minutes with Jesus for today.
Now, take what you’ve heard…share it and live it.
Until next time, keep slowing down, keep listening, and keep walking with Jesus.
