Episode 244 — Luke 14:12-14 — Guests Who Can’t Repay

Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s amazing to be here with you today.

Slow Down
Jesus is here.
He’s sitting in your favorite spot, waiting for you to join Him.
You have a million things on your mind that need your attention, but right now it’s time to be with Jesus.
Set those things aside, relax, and calm your body.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, I invite those who can’t repay.” 
As you exhale, pray: “You will repay me at the resurrection of the just.”
Do this three times, then rest in His presence.

Read
He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

Reread
Hear this passage again — and notice what Jesus says about who to invite and why.
  
Meditate
Jesus is still at the dinner table. And now He turns to the host.
He's just told the guests not to grab the seats of honor. Now He tells the host not to invite the guests who will repay him.
This is radical. In first-century culture — and honestly in every culture — hospitality was a social transaction. You invite people who will invite you back. You give to people who can give to you. You invest in relationships that return the investment.
Jesus flips it entirely: "When you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind."
The people who can't repay you. The ones who have nothing to offer in return. The ones who will never be able to host you back or advance your social standing or return the favor.
Invite them.
And here's the reason Jesus gives — and it's stunning: "You will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just."
The blessing comes precisely because there's no earthly return. When you give to someone who can't repay you, you're not investing in a social network. You're investing in eternity. You're storing up treasure in heaven. You're participating in the economy of the Kingdom — where the currency is grace, not reciprocity.
This is what separates Kingdom generosity from worldly generosity. Worldly generosity is strategic — it gives to get. Kingdom generosity is free — it gives because it has received freely.
You have been the guest who couldn't repay. Jesus invited you to His table — not because you had something to offer, but because He is that kind of host. And now He's asking you to become that kind of host too.
Take a few moments to reflect on this question:
Who in my life needs an invitation they could never earn and could never repay — and am I willing to extend it?

Respond
Jesus, You invited me to Your table when I had nothing to offer. Help me to do the same for others. Give me the generosity to invite the ones who can't repay — to give without expecting anything in return — and to trust that You will repay at the resurrection of the just.

Exercise
The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Invite Someone Who Can't Repay 
Today's habit is an act of Kingdom generosity: identify one specific person — or one group of people — you can invite, include, or serve today who has no way of repaying you.
Write their name down.
Bring it to Jesus and pray: "Jesus, You gave to me when I had nothing to offer. Help me to give to _________________ today — not because they can repay me, not because it will advance my reputation, but because that's what Kingdom generosity looks like. I trust that You will repay at the resurrection of the just. I'm investing in eternity today."
