Episode 45 — Matthew 4:18–22 — Immediately Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it is a blessing to be here with you today. Today is February 14.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin. Slow Down We carry so much around every day — financial worries, relational stress, anxiety about the future, and the pressure to succeed.
Now is the time to set those things down for a few minutes and enjoy some time with Jesus. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it. As you inhale, whisper in your heart: “Here I am”
As you exhale, pray: “Lord send me.” Do this three times, then sit in silence for a few moments. Read One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers — Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew — throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living.
Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”
And they left their nets at once and followed him.
A little farther up the shore he saw two other brothers, James and John, sitting in a boat with their father, Zebedee, repairing their nets. And he called them to come, too.
They immediately followed him, leaving the boat and their father behind.
(Matthew 4:18–22, NLT) Notice What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a word or phrase that catches your attention?
Hold it in your heart for a moment. Reread Hear the passage again slowly, paying attention to the urgency in their response. Meditate The word “immediately” is powerful. It tells us that Peter, Andrew, James, and John didn’t hesitate, didn’t weigh pros and cons, didn’t ask for more time — they simply left their nets and followed Jesus. These nets represented their livelihood, their comfort zone, their identity as fishermen. Dropping them meant stepping into the unknown, trusting that Jesus had something greater in store. We often want to follow Jesus, but we also want to hold on to our “nets” — the things that make us feel secure, the habits that give us comfort, or the roles that define us. But the call of discipleship is urgent. It doesn’t wait for perfect timing or ideal circumstances. When Jesus calls, He invites us into a new mission — one that may disrupt our plans but will lead to greater purpose. The question is: will we respond right away, or will we delay until it feels safe?
Take a few moments to reflect on this question:
What nets am I still holding onto, and am I willing to drop them immediately when Jesus calls? Respond Lord, help me to answer You right away when You call. Exercise The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits. Habit: Step Now
Today, choose one area of your life where you’ve been delaying obedience to God’s call — maybe it’s forgiving someone, starting a conversation, serving in a ministry, or changing a habit. Write it down, and then take one concrete step toward it today. Don’t wait for the “perfect time” or for everything to feel safe. As you act, whisper: “Lord, I choose to follow You immediately.” Let this be your tangible response to His invitation, just like the disciples who left their nets without hesitation.
