Episode 174 — Matthew 15:39–16:4 — The Demand for a Sign Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s an honor to be here with you today.
Today is June 23. Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin. Slow Down Jesus is here.
He’s sitting in your favorite spot, waiting for you to join Him. You have a million things on your mind that need your attention, but right now it’s time to be with Jesus. Set those things aside, relax, and calm your body. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it. As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, You are the only sign I need.” As you exhale, pray: “Open my eyes to what You have already given.” Do this three times, then rest in His presence.
Read Then Jesus sent the people home, and he got into a boat and crossed over to the region of Magadan. One day the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus, demanding that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority. He replied, “You know the saying, ‘Red sky at night means fair weather tomorrow; red sky in the morning means foul weather all day.’ You know how to interpret the weather signs in the sky, but you don’t know how to interpret the signs of the times! Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign, but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah.” Then Jesus left them and went away.  (Matthew 15:39–16:28, NLT) Notice What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a word or phrase that catches your attention?
Hold it in your heart for a moment. Reread Hear these words again — and notice the deep frustration Jesus expresses, and what He points to as the only sign that will be given   Meditate The Pharisees and Sadducees — two groups that agreed on almost nothing — unite here in a common demand: show us a sign from heaven. They can read the weather. Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning. But they cannot read the signs of the times standing right in front of them. Jesus has just fed four thousand people. Before that, five thousand. He has healed the blind, the lame, the deaf, the mute, the demon-possessed. He has walked on water, calmed a storm, and raised the dead. And they want a sign. He sighs deeply — the same kind of sigh He gave before healing the deaf man — and He refuses. No sign will be given except the sign of Jonah. Three days in the earth. Resurrection. There is something Jesus is naming about the nature of unbelief that is worth sitting with: no amount of evidence satisfies a heart that has decided not to believe. The Pharisees weren’t lacking signs. They were lacking the willingness to receive them. And one more spectacular miracle was not going to change that. For us, the resurrection has already happened. The sign of Jonah has been given. The empty tomb stands as the defining sign of history. The question Jesus is pressing on us is the same one He pressed on them — not whether we have enough evidence, but whether we are willing to receive what has already been given. Take a few moments to reflect on this question: Am I looking for more signs from God before I fully commit — when the greatest sign in history has already been given and is asking for my response? Respond Jesus, forgive me for the times I have demanded more when You have already given everything. I receive the sign of the resurrection today — and I build my life on it. Exercise The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits. Habit: Standing on the Resurrection Today’s habit is a practice of resurrection-shaped living: make one deliberate decision today that only makes sense if Jesus actually rose from the dead — an act of generosity, forgiveness, courage, or hope that would be foolish if the tomb were not empty. Give something away that you’d keep if this life were all there is. Forgive someone you’d write off if there were no ultimate justice. Hope for something that seems impossible if God is not alive and active. Step toward something that frightens you if the One who conquered death is not truly with you. Before you act, pray: “Jesus, because You are risen — I can do this. The tomb is empty. Death does not have the final word. And that changes everything about how I live today.” I have one ask of you before you go, would you please consider supporting this podcast? Click the support the podcast link and give a simple gift. That’s your two minutes with Jesus for today.
Now, take what you’ve heard…share it and live it.
Until next time, keep slowing down, keep listening, and keep walking with Jesus
