Episode 245 — Luke 10:29-37 — Who is My Neighbor

Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s an honor to be here with you today.
Today is September 9.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin.

Slow Down
You are stepping into a sacred space with the intent of meeting Jesus.
He wants to meet with you and spend time with you.
Take this moment to slow down, quiet your mind, and prepare your heart to connect with Him.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, I lay down my excuses.” 
As you exhale, pray: “I’m coming to your banquet.”
Do this three times, then rest in His presence.

Read
 When one of those who reclined at table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!” But he said to him, “A man once gave a great banquet and invited many. And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.’ And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.’ And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’ ”

Notice
What stands out to you in this passage?

Hold it in your heart for a moment.

Reread
Hear these words again — and notice the excuses. And notice what the master does when they come.

Meditate
Everything is ready. Come.
That's the invitation. Simple. Clear. Urgent. The banquet is prepared. The table is set. The food is hot. The host is waiting. Come.
And they all began to make excuses.
Notice that they don't say no outright. They say "please have me excused." They're polite about it. They have reasonable-sounding reasons — a field to inspect, oxen to examine, a new marriage to tend to. None of these things are bad. They're just more important to them than the banquet.
And that's the point. The excuses aren't about the banquet being unappealing. They're about other things being more appealing. The invitation was accepted — and then set aside when something else came along.
The master's response is striking: he's angry. Not because the excuses are outrageous — but because the invitation was real, the banquet was ready, and they chose other things over it.
So he sends his servant out — not once, but twice. First to the streets and lanes of the city — the poor, the crippled, the blind, the lame. Then to the highways and hedges — the outsiders, the ones nobody expected. "Compel them to come in," he says. "My house must be filled."
The ones who were first invited — the ones who had every reason to come — miss the banquet. And the ones nobody expected fill the seats.
Here's what Jesus is saying: the Kingdom of God is not waiting for you to get around to it. The invitation is urgent. The banquet is now. And every excuse — no matter how reasonable it sounds — is still a choice to put something else first.
What are you putting first?
Take a few moments to sit with this question:
What excuses have I been making for not fully coming to Jesus — and what is it that I'm actually choosing over the banquet?

Respond
Jesus, I lay down my excuses. I've been saying "please have me excused" while choosing other things over You. I don't want to miss the banquet because I was too busy with a field or oxen or anything else. I'm coming. Everything else can wait. I'm coming to Your table.

Exercise
The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Lay Down the Excuse
Today's habit is an act of honest surrender: identify one specific excuse you've been making for not fully following Jesus — and lay it down today.
Write it down. Name it specifically. Don't soften it.
Then ask yourself: Is this excuse keeping me from the banquet? Am I choosing a field or oxen or something else over the invitation that is standing open right now?
Bring it to Jesus and pray: "Jesus, I've been making the excuse of _________________. I've been saying 'please have me excused' while choosing _________________ over You. I don't want to be one of the ones who misses the banquet because I was too busy with other things. I lay this excuse down today. I'm coming. Everything is ready. I'm choosing the banquet."
Then take one concrete step toward full surrender today. Not someday. Today.
The servant is at your door. The invitation is in your hand. The banquet is ready.
Lay down the excuse. And come.
