Episode 216 — Luke 11:29–32 — Take Jesus at His Word

Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s great to be here with you today.
Today is August 11.
Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin.

Slow Down
You are stepping into a sacred space with the intent of meeting Jesus.
He wants to meet with you and spend time with you.
Take this moment to slow down, quiet your mind, and prepare your heart to connect with Him.
Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it.
As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, I hear your preaching.” 
As you exhale, pray: “I change my mind about You.”
Do this three times, then rest in His presence.

Read
As the crowd pressed in on Jesus, he said, “This evil generation keeps asking me to show them a miraculous sign. But the only sign I will give them is the sign of Jonah. What happened to him was a sign to the people of Nineveh that God had sent him. What happens to the Son of Man will be a sign to these people that he was sent by God. 
“The queen of Sheba will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here—but you refuse to listen. The people of Nineveh will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Now someone greater than Jonah is here—but you refuse to repent.

Reread
Hear this passage again and notice what Jesus says about signs — and what He says about those who refuse to listen.

Meditate
The crowd wants a sign. They want proof. They want something spectacular before they'll commit.
But Jesus refuses. He's already given them everything they need — His teaching, His miracles, His presence. And still they demand more evidence before they'll believe.
So Jesus points them to two unlikely examples of faith.
The people of Nineveh — a pagan city, Israel's enemy — heard Jonah preach and repented. They got one sign, a man out of a fish and they heard the word and responded.
The Queen of Sheba — a foreign ruler from a distant land — traveled hundreds of miles just to hear Solomon's wisdom. She didn't demand proof. She came with an open heart and received what was offered.
And then Jesus says something that should stop us in our tracks: "Someone greater than Jonah is here. Someone greater than Solomon is here. But you refuse to listen. You refuse to repent."
The irony is devastating. The people with the most access to Jesus — the ones who walked with Him, ate with Him, heard Him teach day after day — were the ones most resistant to Him. Familiarity had bred contempt. They wanted a sign because they'd stopped taking His words seriously.
After 216 days of walking through the Gospels together, this is worth sitting with. We have more access to Jesus than any generation in history. We have the complete Scriptures. We have the Holy Spirit. We have the testimony of two thousand years of His faithfulness.
The question isn't whether Jesus has given us enough. The question is whether we're taking Him at His word.
Take a few moments to sit with this question:
After 216 days with Jesus — am I truly listening and obeying, or am I still waiting for a sign?

Respond
Jesus, I take You at Your word. I don't need another sign. I have Your teaching, Your life, Your death, Your resurrection. That is enough. Help me to respond like the people of Nineveh — with repentance. Help me to come like the Queen of Sheba — with an open and hungry heart.

Exercise
The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits.
Habit: Take Him at His Word
Today's habit is an act of simple obedience: identify one specific thing Jesus has said — in Scripture, in prayer, in conviction — that you've been treating as optional.
Not something you disagree with. Something you believe but haven't acted on. Something you've been waiting to feel more ready for, or more certain about, or more comfortable with.
Write it down.
Then ask yourself: Am I waiting for a sign — or am I willing to take Jesus at His word?
The people of Nineveh didn't wait for a second message. They heard Jonah and they repented. The Queen of Sheba didn't wait for Solomon to come to her. She made the journey.
What journey is Jesus asking you to make today? What repentance is He calling you to? What step of obedience has been waiting long enough?
Bring it to Jesus and pray: "Jesus, I've been treating _________________ as optional. But You said it. And I believe You. I'm choosing today to take You at Your word — not because I feel ready, but because You are trustworthy. I'm done waiting for a sign. I'm acting on what I already know."
Then take the step. Today.
