Episode 195 — John 7:37–39 — Are You Thirsty? Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s an honor to be here with you today.
Today is July 21. Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin. Slow Down Jesus is here.
He’s sitting in your favorite spot, waiting for you to join Him. You have a million things on your mind that need your attention, but right now it’s time to be with Jesus. Set those things aside, relax, and calm your body. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it. As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, I’m thirsty.” As you exhale, pray: “Give me living water.” Do this three times, then rest in His presence. Read On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’ ” (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.) (John 7:37–39, NLT) Notice What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a word or phrase that catches your attention?
Hold it in your heart for a moment. Reread Hear this passage again — and notice what Jesus promises to the crowd.   Meditate Jesus invites us to bring our deepest thirst to Him. Picture the scene: It's the last day of the festival. The climax. The moment when everything comes to a head. And Jesus stands up and shouts—not whispers, but shouts—to the crowds: "Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!" He's not talking about physical thirst. He's talking about the deep, aching hunger that lives in every human heart. The longing for something more. The sense that there's something missing, something we need but can't quite name. We try to fill that thirst with so many things. We try to fill it with success. With relationships. With comfort. With pleasure. With achievement. With approval. We drink and drink and drink, and yet we're still thirsty. Jesus is saying: Stop. Bring that thirst to Me. Don't try to satisfy it with anything else. Bring it to Me, and I will give you living water. What is living water? Jesus explains: It's the Spirit. It's the presence of God flowing through you. It's not a one-time drink that satisfies you for a moment. It's rivers—plural—flowing from your heart. It's an endless, inexhaustible source of life and transformation. But here's the key: Jesus says "Anyone who is thirsty may come to me." He's not saying, "Anyone who is perfect may come." He's not saying, "Anyone who has it all figured out may come." He's saying, "Anyone who is thirsty." Your thirst is your invitation. Your longing is your qualification. The very fact that you feel empty is what makes you eligible to be filled. And notice what He promises: Not just a drink, but rivers. Not just satisfaction, but overflow. Not just for you, but flowing from you to others. When you drink of the living water, you become a source of life for those around you. Take a few moments to sit with these questions: What am I truly thirsty for? What longing lives deep in my heart? What have I been trying to use to satisfy that thirst? Has it worked? Am I willing to bring my thirst—my hunger, my longing, my emptiness—to Jesus and ask Him to fill it? Respond Jesus, I'm thirsty. I've tried to satisfy my thirst with so many things, and none of them work. I bring my hunger to You. Fill me with Your Spirit. Give me living water. Make me a source of life for others. Exercise The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits. Habit: Identifying Your Thirst Today's habit is an act of honest hunger: identify your deepest thirst. Write it down. Name it specifically. Then ask yourself: What have I been trying to use to satisfy this thirst? What have I been drinking from that hasn't worked? Now, bring this thirst to Jesus and pray: "Jesus, I'm thirsty. I'm bringing this hunger to You. I'm asking You to fill me with Your Spirit. Give me living water. Transform this thirst into rivers of life flowing through me and from me to others." Don't be afraid of your thirst. Don't try to minimize it or pretend it doesn't exist. Your thirst is an invitation. It's the Holy Spirit drawing you toward Jesus, inviting you to drink. And here's what's beautiful: When you drink of the living water, you don't just get satisfied. You become a source of life for others. Your thirst becomes their blessing. Your emptiness becomes their filling. Bring your thirst to Jesus today. And let Him fill you with rivers of living water.
