Episode 144 — Mark 5:1–13 — The Man with Many Demons Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s awesome to be here with you today.
Today is May 24. Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin. Slow Down Jesus is here.
He’s sitting in your favorite spot, waiting for you to join Him. You have a million things on your mind that need your attention, but right now it’s time to be with Jesus. Set those things aside, relax, and calm your body. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it. As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, Your authority is complete.” As you exhale, pray: “Nothing is stronger than You.” Do this three times, then rest in His presence.
Read So they arrived at the other side of the lake, in the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil spirit came out from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be restrained, even with a chain. Whenever he was put into chains and shackles—as he often was—he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones. When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him. With a shriek, he screamed, “Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don’t torture me!” For Jesus had already said to the spirit, “Come out of the man, you evil spirit.” Then Jesus demanded, “What is your name?” And he replied, “My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man.” Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some •distant place. There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby.  “Send us into those pigs,” the spirits begged.“Let us •enter them.” So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of about 2,000 pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water.  (Mark 5:1–13, NLT) Notice What stands out to you in this passage?
Is there a word or phrase that catches your attention?
Hold it in your heart for a moment. Reread Hear this story again — and notice that even the demons recognize who Jesus is and bow before His authority.   Meditate This is one of the most dramatic scenes in all of the Gospels. A man beyond all human help — living among the dead, breaking every chain, cutting himself, beyond the reach of anyone who tried - and Jesus steps off a boat and the forces tormenting this man immediately bow before Him. Notice: no one asked Jesus to come to this region. There was no synagogue invitation, no crowd waiting to hear Him teach. Jesus crossed the lake — through a storm - specifically to reach this one man. That detail alone is staggering. The Son of God navigated a fierce storm to get to a man that the rest of the world had given up on. The demons know exactly who Jesus is. They cry out Son of the Most High God - a more complete confession of His identity than most of His own disciples had yet voiced. And they beg. Not fight. Not resist. They beg. Because in the presence of Jesus, there is no contest. Whatever has felt unbreakable in your life — whatever has chained you, isolated you, driven you to places of shame and desperation - bring it here. Jesus crossed the storm to reach this man. He has not given up on you either. Take a few moments to reflect on this question: Is there something in my life that has felt unbreakable — a pattern, a bondage, a darkness - that I need to bring before the authority of Jesus today? Is there something in my life that has felt unbreakable — a pattern, a bondage, a darkness - that I need to bring before the authority of Jesus today? Respond Jesus, whatever feels too strong, too established, too far gone — I bring it before Your authority today. You are stronger. You are the Son of the Most High God. Exercise The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits. Habit: Bringing Bondage to Jesus
Today's habit is an act of spiritual courage: name one area of your life where you have felt bound — a repeated sin, a persistent fear, a pattern you cannot seem to break on your own - and pray over it today with the authority that belongs to those who are in Christ. You are not praying in your own strength. You are praying in the name of the One before whom Legion bowed. You are not alone in this. And whatever has held you does not have the final word. Pray specifically: "Jesus, I name this before You. I have tried to break this in my own strength and I cannot. But You crossed a storm to set one man free - and I ask You to speak Your authority into this area of my life. Come. Set me free. You are stronger than whatever holds me" Then receive prayer from someone you trust if you are able. Bondage rarely breaks in isolation — it breaks in community, in the light, before the authority of Jesus. I have one ask of you before you go, could you please share this podcast with one person today? One person at a time will grow this podcast to help more people walk with Jesus. That’s your two minutes with Jesus for today.
Now, take what you’ve heard…share it and live it.
Until next time, keep slowing down, keep listening, and keep walking with Jesus.
