Episode 129 — Matthew 12:38–40 — The Sign of Jonah Hey everybody, welcome to the podcast, I’m Nick and it’s magnificent to be here with you today.
Today is May 9. Each day, we follow a simple rhythm: Slow Down, Read, Notice, Reread, Meditate, Respond, and Exercise.
Let’s begin. Slow Down You are stepping into a sacred space with the intent of meeting Jesus.
He wants to meet with you and spend time with you. Take this moment to slow down, quiet your mind, and prepare your heart to connect with Him. Close your eyes, take a deep breath in and slowly release it. As you inhale, whisper: “Jesus, You are enough.” As you exhale, pray: “Let me not demand more.” Do this three times, then rest in His presence. Read One day some teachers of religious law and Pharisees came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we want you to show us a miraculous sign to prove your authority.” But Jesus replied, “Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign; but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.  (Matthew 12:38–40, NLT) Notice What stands out to you in this passage? Is there a word or phrase that catches your attention? Hold it in your heart for a moment. Reread Hear these words again — and notice what Jesus points to as the only sign that will be given: not a spectacle, but a death and a resurrection. Meditate The Pharisees had already seen miracle after miracle. They had watched Jesus heal the blind, cast out demons, and restore the broken. And still they came asking for a sign — as if the right performance might finally tip them over the edge into belief. Jesus refuses. Not because He can’t perform signs, but because He sees what is really happening. They aren’t genuinely seeking — they are stalling. Another sign won’t produce faith in a heart that has already decided not to believe. It will only produce a demand for the next one. And so He points them — and us — to the only sign that truly matters: the sign of Jonah. Three days in the earth. Three days in the darkness. And then — resurrection. The entire weight of the Christian faith rests not on a series of impressive moments but on one decisive event: Jesus died and rose again. That is the sign. That is the proof. That is the foundation. We live on the other side of that sign. We have the empty tomb, the witnesses, the testimony of the Spirit. The question Jesus is pressing is not whether we have enough evidence — it is whether we are willing to receive what has already been given. Take a few moments to reflect on this question:
Am I genuinely resting in the sign of the resurrection — or am I still quietly waiting for God to prove Himself to me in some other way before I fully trust Him? Respond Jesus, You gave the greatest sign possible — You died and You rose. Forgive me for the times I’ve looked past the resurrection and asked for something more. The empty tomb is enough. You are enough. Help me to build my faith on that foundation — not on feelings, not on circumstances, but on the fact that You are alive. Exercise The rush of life will meet you again when you leave this sacred place—but you can carry this moment into your day by forming new habits. Habit: Anchoring to the Resurrection
— Remind Yourself of the Empty Tomb at Least Three Times Today Today’s habit is a simple act of remembrance: at least three times today — morning, midday, and evening — pause and remind yourself of this one fact: Jesus died and rose again. The tomb is empty. He is alive. You can say it out loud. You can write it down. You can set a reminder on your phone with just those words. The form doesn’t matter — the repetition does. We are forgetful people. We drift toward doubt not usually through dramatic crisis but through simple inattention — letting the noise of the day crowd out the most important reality there is. This habit pushes back against that drift. Every time you return to it today, pray: “Lord, this is enough. You are alive — and that changes everything.” I have one ask of you before you go, would you please consider supporting this podcast with a coffee today? One coffee at a time will help me to keep this podcast growing to help more people walk with Jesus. Click the coffee link and give a simple gift. That’s your two minutes with Jesus for today.
Now, take what you’ve heard…share it and live it.
Until next time, keep slowing down, keep listening, and keep walking with Jesus.
