00:00.00 sidekqpodcast Hello hello and welcome to another exciting episode of psychics and side quest the best unofficial dungs and dragons podcast in my humbly biased opinion I've got an awesome desk for you this week a blast from the past you might say but before we get to my guest got to do my first ad read. Insert here for adre all right and without further ado I want to get into it with my returning guest of the podcast. So hello would you care to introduce yourself tell us who it is that you are and what is it that you do. 00:36.15 Brian Rose Ah, hi my name is Brian Rose I'm a venture painter and band director. 00:40.24 sidekqpodcast Yeah, so has that been going well since the last time we spoke which is oh my goodness I'm looking at the schedule ah or the the archival history here of the podcast you and I recorded your original episode back on August first of 20 so right in the. Thick of everything of the pandemic and then your episode didn't premire until May Nineteen Twenty Twenty one ah you know and that was post baby and like trying to catch up on everything like that. So yeah, how how has life been on the painting mininie's front and the band directing front. 01:17.23 Brian Rose Ah, it's been great. Um, absolutely enjoying a lot of the new stuff that's been coming out for all the different companies for just all the different things you can paint up and stuff like that. 01:27.45 sidekqpodcast So are you doing it more for like a hobby thing and like for your own games that you're doing and running and playing in or are you like some of these other accounts that I've seen on social media where they're like you know here's me doing like some of these warhammer 40 k painters are like. 01:33.86 Brian Rose Um, yeah. 01:45.15 sidekqpodcast They take you to the next level where it's like oh let me put some like wiring on the hammer and and use an airbrush to make it look like this hammer that this guy is holding has like it's emanating lightning or something like that like some of these things are like totally you know next level and blow me out of the water with my like. Oh here's like 2 little dots for the eyeballs and I hope I didn't you know smudge the paint kind of a thing. 02:13.32 Brian Rose Um, well I I kind of do it I'm an amateur I'm a very good amateur is is what I do but it's mostly for games that I actually play and stuff kind of like that. Been jumping into star wars legion this last year a whole lot been having a blast doing that you know because it's all the favorite star wars characters and and right now I'm running wookie so you know like. 02:38.18 sidekqpodcast Oh so it's like ah what was it that was revenge of the revenge of the Sith is when we saw katique and and all the stuff during like the ending part of the clone wars right. 02:50.13 Brian Rose Yeah, that's ah, that's basically that how you build the armies are kind of like things that could happen in the Star Wars world and then you fight sometimes it's people that you actually would and sometimes it's just random ones. 03:02.68 sidekqpodcast And I do have to ask? do they have mandalorians. 03:05.91 Brian Rose A cup they do. They have 2 mandalorians. There's the rebel mandalorians which use a lot of like ah oh from the the oh what are the owl the owl ones? oh. 03:17.95 sidekqpodcast And then the the night owls are. 03:22.91 Brian Rose Yeah, the night owls and then they also have in the shadow collective. You have gar saxons mandaloran and stuff like that with like rook cast and stuff. 03:32.27 sidekqpodcast Ooh That's cool. Yeah I mean I know I've gotta be better about like all the Star Wars media to catch up on with like ah Clone Wars and a bad batch and all this stuff. But I've loved watching the Mandalorian and I just I Just think they're so darn cool. And would love for them to show up in more stuff. 03:49.65 Brian Rose But you can take macdo. You can even take Mando himself and group. Um, yeah or number brokeu at gro. 03:58.48 sidekqpodcast Yeah, Grew Yeah Gro go gro. Go yeah, Gro is like shortened nickname I guess for a name that's already so short ain't a little guy that is show short. 04:05.56 Brian Rose Fruits of. 04:11.41 Brian Rose And and. 04:12.26 sidekqpodcast Well, that's cool. Yeah, so you're you're so you're just painting mininies and playing these games and having a grand old time and when you're not you know, directing and educating the next generation in the fine arts. 04:28.10 Brian Rose Um, oh yeah, like ah and and painting is like a great way to like kind of like relax. You don't have to be great at it like it's just ah, mentally you can turn your brain off and just kind of like throw down some paint do something a little bit here and there have something at the end of the day. 04:44.31 sidekqpodcast I was going to ask you since August first of 2020 to like today when we're recording here April Thirtieth how many painted minis would you say that you have if you had to like guess. 04:45.20 Brian Rose Can be proud of. 04:57.43 Brian Rose Oh I tried to calculate that last year actually because I've I'm on two and a half years of painting every single day. Um, so probably about oh. Two hundred three hundred east 05:13.98 sidekqpodcast So Wow. And and yeah I mean you're like and as you said yourself, you're like the best of Amateurish Levels. So I mean these things probably look amazing like 20300 Minis is no joke I mean you're probably putting serious hours in these minis to make sure that they look awesome. And Stuff. So. 05:36.30 Brian Rose Yeah, well and it's ah right now I'm kind of working on how do I back off to like not go like full tilt into every single one like just just good enough for like getting it onto the table. How how do I back off a little bit. 05:41.64 sidekqpodcast M. 05:48.40 sidekqpodcast Sure and right? yeah unless you decide to do a side gig where you're like hey I'm just gonna like paint your mininies and stuff like that pay me like however much money and I'll paint your mininies and make them look real cool. 05:51.10 Brian Rose And not make it take 5 years 06:03.89 Brian Rose Oh yeah, that's that's that's a weird one to try to figure out I've had a few people ask me, but it's always like oh that's my time. 06:12.76 sidekqpodcast So I yeah I just want to enjoy my time I don't want to have to make it another job in my life. Yeah. 06:19.14 Brian Rose Yeah, no need to add any more stress. 06:23.95 sidekqpodcast There we go? Yeah and um and listeners of our first episode that we both did together jack the sky elf farmer you know I did mention that were you know in that episode that we're both fraternity brothers so we go back to college so you know that's where ah, you know some of the bantering back and forth. Ah, comes from and Brian Brian's a good dude and you know I know he's you know Yeah I think you were you know Trumpet Trumpet player and you were like you know, working on all your horn chops and woodwinds and percussion and all all that good stuff for for the kiddos and. 06:56.90 Brian Rose Oh yeah, um I'm I'm competent on all the ones that I have to teach and right now I'm expanding out into orchestra stuff. So. 07:03.34 sidekqpodcast Oo is there like ah now being a you know ah being a director and you know, ah you were saying bringing in the orchestra stuff does that mean you get to like be like now is the perfect opportunity for us to bring like John Williams and ah silvestry and ah you know Horner like all these like. Ah, composers of great nerd dumbm ah pieces of pop culture and and and beloved cinema and stuff like that. You're like yeah we're going to learn to play like ah you know this ah piece from John Williams from 1 of the star wars films or something like that that. 07:37.77 Brian Rose Ah, we could. But we're still middle school so I have second year players in eighth graders now like ah within reason we try to find both stuff and. 07:43.50 sidekqpodcast Mm. Sure, yeah, mid okay, well hey I mean you got to give them something to look forward to and and aspire to maybe like the fun thing of like okay we're gonna figure out how to do like you know the main theme for star wars and make it sound. You know. You know your middle schoolers and your second year plane. So yeah, it may not be like epic sounding like the London Philharonic but you you know you got to start somewhere while I was just at my son's t-ball game earlier tonight and he's you know, just walking as slow as he can to first base but it's like I know he's got to start goofy somewhere. And his youth and then one day you know he'll be like ah like a pro in high school or college or wherever if he ah keeps with it so you got to build the fundamentals. Yeah, all right? Well as we're having a grand old time catching up and and you know. 08:32.65 Brian Rose Um, oh yeah, always. 08:40.70 sidekqpodcast Shooting the breeze and all that stuff this podcast. You know we like to ask ah the question of ah well in a revisited context have you been able to play I know you were saying you were playing some of the Star Wars but have you been able to play any more D and D or other kinds of tabletop role. Playing games since the last time we spoke first. 09:01.25 Brian Rose I've actually expanded out from ding. Um, we have a group of guys in my area that have been playing battle tech and so we've been doing like the meck warrior and I love the me warrior destiny stuff kind of like that. So. It's like giant fighting robots. Set you know, only 1000 years from now. So like Ford companies building giant machines of war like and it's it's a that's been kind of like a blast because you're just like all right and then. 09:24.64 sidekqpodcast Right? right. 09:33.99 Brian Rose Kind of like figuring out like some of those worlds. It's a great way to like roleplay is a great way to explore the different world at the like little man level not just the like what's going on in the big scheme of things. So it's been kind of fun. 09:48.54 sidekqpodcast That sounds cool Battleex ah is it very like Gunam wing sort of a thing where it's like you as a pilot in like this big meck suit and you're going around and fighting or is it like the war hammer thing where it's like okay I have like a whole battalion of mec warriors that I'm charging into battle. 10:06.54 Brian Rose Ah, whenever we do it in the roleplay we do it where like we each drive like 1 or 2 macs so and like it's the pilot that matters for us for the company. It's the mac oh pilots are replacing. 10:15.37 sidekqpodcast M I sure yes I corporate overlord ah I now I haven't seen pacific rain buddy. It would be like yeah the corporate overlords that more care about um you know the the yegers. And it's like ever. You know the real stories like with the the the co- linkked mental mental link bridge pilots that are like no we got to fight these giant Kaiju Monster things and save the world and then ever his like no the but the me you mean don't damage. It don't chip the pain or whatever. 10:47.60 Brian Rose Yeah, we can't afford the to fix it. Yeah weaker. 10:51.26 sidekqpodcast It's like the world is ending. We have bigger problems than worrying about a code of paint don't cover up the sponsorship logos. We need people to see those. Ah oh. 10:55.45 Brian Rose All right now. 11:05.40 Brian Rose Yeah, yeah, Pacific Rim is one of those where it's ah it's real close to like if you're wanting to watch some and I think the battle tech even has a like ah 90 s cartoon that you can find on Youtube that's. 11:16.43 sidekqpodcast Okay. 11:20.85 Brian Rose It's it's awful, but it's great like. 11:24.36 sidekqpodcast Ah I was just thinking of that joke of like the like oh don't cover up the branding but then it made me think of like Nascar like is there like a mode of like battle tech Nascar if you will like. Hey these battlenecks are going to go fight against a whole slug of bad guys and so you're like there in the stands and you're like yeah cheering on your favorite battleneck or whatever. 11:44.46 Brian Rose Well, there's a whole world in that system. That's it's called Solaris and it it's basically Las Vegas like in fighting. Um, so like they do like mma type fighting but it's like Mac on mac like and so it's like. 11:57.29 sidekqpodcast Oh oh like real steel with huge aman. Yeah, with Giant Rock em sockum robots yeah 12:03.18 Brian Rose Yeah, like real. Yeah exactly real steels hope as yeah with the stands too. It might be full. It can it can everybody. But. 12:14.72 sidekqpodcast Yeah, okay, all right? That's pretty cool. So yeah, you're you're jamming. You're playing different and cool games. So maybe hopefully you get to get back into some d and d or pathfinder tales of the valiant or. Ah, the Mcdm Rpg you know any vampire any of these other great ah tabletop games that are out there which ah watch I think segues nicely into the question here since the last time we spoke has there been a new or interesting npc or sidekick character that you've come across and why is this character. Ah, been interesting to you. You know whether it's from a game or ah, some piece of media or literature or whatnot. So. 12:56.28 Brian Rose Um, well I was actually thinking about that one. Um and the one that I ended up coming up with was he's not like technically like an npc because you can play him in 40 k like on the actual tabletop and stuff but like you don't play as him and. 13:11.72 sidekqpodcast Um. 13:13.86 Brian Rose Bjor the fell handed and so he's he's part of the space pools which is what I still do in 40 k and he's like the oldest lived while living um ever like he's entombed inside of a. Giant dreadnod and there's a particular book. It's called Ashes of Prospero by Gav Thorpe where he he like shows up and he's helping out one of the the main spellcaster wizard of the the space wolves and. 13:38.46 sidekqpodcast Mm. 13:49.63 Brian Rose There's like a scene that I Absolutely love where he's just they're like in this like wark type thing with like demons and everything like that and so he just picks him up and throws him through like this portal. He's like you need to get into this portal like leave this killing to me and then he just like he's Like. Just going crazy on these like bievans as he's like and then he just like casually picks up a guy and tosses it like just like. 14:12.91 sidekqpodcast It's like the doomslayer or something like that like no, no, no, all these guys are mine. You get out of here. 14:18.18 Brian Rose And yeah, yeah, this is my job you do yours? yeah. 14:21.44 sidekqpodcast And and then the heavy metal starts up and chainsaw Swords and you know whatever else mini guns and ah explosions and stuff. 14:29.63 Brian Rose Yeah, foreigner starts playing but and. 14:34.97 sidekqpodcast Ah, okay, that's pretty cool I dig I Know it's so daunting all the Forty K Mythos that's out there. You know the literature just in the game itself and you know I had my brief foray back in my middle school years with the imperial guard and I had like a basilisk artillery thing and a tank and. You know a couple squads of dudes and I've told this story multiple times of like how you know I was with my friend group. You know was into forty K and when we all got together 3 of my friends would be too busy arguing about like what characters they could or couldn't use for the battles. And then the other 2 of us would be like look at this cool tank I painted and Wow you did such a good job on that. So the rest the 2 of us would like be comparing our our many painting skills for middle school age ah levels of skills and then like I said my other three friends you know God Bless Him I. I Love them and I haven't spoken to them in a long while but they would just argue about like which characters you could or couldn't use and stuff like that. But you know Hashtag Middle school problems I guess. 15:39.81 Brian Rose Ah, it doesn't change arguing about rules still part of the. 15:41.30 sidekqpodcast Oh, but so when you get to be you know a mid 30 s year old dude it's like still a problem. Okay, never it never goes away. Okay and then so and then same question or same thing. 15:47.37 Brian Rose Oh yeah, that never goes there's still the book. 15:59.78 sidekqpodcast Ah, in regards to side Quest has there been a new or interesting side Quest or B Plot element that you've come across and you know your tabletop gaming video games movie film, television, etc. And why is this B Plot element this side Quest stuck with you. 16:15.67 Brian Rose Um, oh I recently played through that hobwarts legacy. Um, and there's there's like 1 of the missions where you meet this one gallon you're just like saving in all the magical creatures and stuff and then you end up like saving a dragon. 16:17.39 sidekqpodcast Okay, so. 16:32.49 Brian Rose And stuff kind of like that and there's like the bad guys you kind of have to like and there's some elements where you can either choose to sneak through it or you can like go in full tilt So it kind of gives you a lot of different ways to figure out an answer to the same problem. 16:49.38 sidekqpodcast Okay I haven't had an opportunity to play that game. Um, so yeah, that sounds cool. You know, ah you being able to like save a dragon like in ah in a Harry Potter context would be pretty cool. So ah, yeah, and then of course we like to round out the personal interview section. The question of are there any new or interesting hobbies or passions that you've developed here in the last couple years and why is this hobby or passion stuck with you. 17:20.57 Brian Rose Um, ah well now it's just mostly just music and the wargaming like a little little bit of that been hiking a lot more though. So been kind like do lot more outdoors as much as possible. 17:27.90 sidekqpodcast Okay, so. So Do you find that being outdoors in nature kind of like helps you in the context of like being able to you know, connect to or appreciate music more or even like with your painting like you're seeing colors in Nature. And you're like oh I Really like that color on that flower I should remember that color So the next time that I'm painting. Maybe I can try and evoke that color again. 17:56.51 Brian Rose Yeah, no, it definitely helps with things kind of like that and plus you get to see cool sights. My favorite thing to do is to climb to the top of the mountains I try to do like real big like. Man versus nature type things where like we might not make it to the top. But we're going to try our best and in music you kind of have like some parts of that and and I use it a lot in my classroom where I go like there's going to be parts where like hiking is fun, but this part sucks and there's some parts. Kind of like with just everything that we do where it's like well this isn't the most fun of it but it makes it more fun later or when you get to the end goal like you get to see something Cool. You get to be able to play something Cool. So it. It kind of like coincides that way. 18:46.27 sidekqpodcast And there we go. Yeah I think it's been a great catchup section here at the beginning of the podcast that now I think it's time to head into some Npc creation. 19:02.67 sidekqpodcast And npc creation is brought to you by you the podcast audience and our lovely awesome patrons from patreon so now is the part in the show where I lift up a glass or a can of Cherry Dr Pepper in this case and we say cheers and give them all a loud hurrah so to you our queen of the patreon Katie Downey as well as our other wealthy level patrons Anson Jablinsky nicholas carterelli and my old great loving mom and dad we say. Why don't you go to the show notes below go to my podcast website or just go directly to patreon.com/sidekicks and side quest to learn more about our accommodations that are waiting for you at the levitating platter help us. Expand our operations in this demiplane and worlds beyond all right? Ah and I was just reminded as we got to the end of the personal interview section I'll just throw it in now just because I think it's cool in reference to the oh did you get to play any d and d since the last time we spoke you technically did get to play some d and d with me. 20:30.31 sidekqpodcast Ah, you got to join the small club of people that got to run ah like a major npc character in one of my campaigns that I did so you you played ah 1 of my captains. 20:41.41 Brian Rose Oh yeah, that was really cool I think so yeah I was a little bit unsure like as I always am unure about I was like oh am I doing this right. 20:42.58 sidekqpodcast Yeah, and and you had fun getting to do that. 20:58.37 Brian Rose And you you even had to be like no no, you're doing great. 21:02.11 sidekqpodcast There we go? Yeah, you had a very like ah like a gibbs inspired sort of ah ah, water ginasi ah captain guy that you were running who is like very much like a like a gibbs from the pirates of the caribbean was like what I had in my head. But yeah, he was like a water ginasi. Ah, yeah, love sea turtles. Yeah yep, so all right? Well yeah, this is the npc making part so we could make a dude like Gibbs again or you know we maybe we roll the dice randomly and see something that we get so um. 21:19.22 Brian Rose That was exactly what I thought doing it. Always guys. 21:37.70 sidekqpodcast Is that kind of what you're wanting to do today is roll some dice and figure out what we get craft a story along the way or do you have an idea that you wanted to work with. 21:47.24 Brian Rose Um, I kind of had an idea. Um, it's not fully fleshed out yet though. But um I don't know I was thinking of. Kind of like a weird Librarian type character short small and thick large glasses is kind of like the main thought I was kind of thinking out of like kind of very bookish. 22:06.67 sidekqpodcast Okay, we can totally do that if that's what you want? Yeah so like the the the only framework that we're working with is that we expect this character to be a Librarian on the smaller side who. Or just wears like very large glasses and. 22:25.69 Brian Rose Yeah, like just kind of like you know you you know, kind of what I'm thinking like where you're like I don't know you see the glasses first is kind of a like um old school kind of or maybe or probably like. 22:34.91 sidekqpodcast Ah, so just very bad eyesight. 22:39.87 sidekqpodcast Maybe or they're just this fashion piece right. 22:45.55 Brian Rose Like used to be well I don't know I was kind of thinking kind of like a Librarian inspired you know, like from the that Tv show character or what's that one? um, where they go find the magical artifacts and they're kind of like safe keeping them. 23:03.18 sidekqpodcast Ah, oh I see the Librarians show. Okay, so kind of like a arcane sort of Librarian like you know like it's books and stuff like that. But there's also artifacts and stuff that they keep under lock and gate for. 23:07.33 Brian Rose Um, yeah him. 23:12.72 Brian Rose The acts. 23:18.60 Brian Rose Yeah, like somebody that like if you wanted to create like a large kind of like library in your world or go to the library and the D and D world they have that big one. He could be a character that could kind of like. 23:33.10 sidekqpodcast Candle keep and okay, all right? So our ideas that like some kind of arcane Librarian ah archivist type character that works in this place. 23:34.88 Brian Rose Yeah, can't do who That's what it is. 23:46.41 sidekqpodcast And that they have big prominent glasses and that's and that's what we're working with and everything else can be randomized. Okay, all right? Well if you are ready to begin. Ah, we like to begin Npc creation with trying to determine a name for a character. 23:54.17 Brian Rose Um. 24:03.97 sidekqpodcast And of course we do that by rolling a D twenty. 24:10.64 sidekqpodcast And and what did we get. 24:16.60 Brian Rose Let me grab a D Twenty real quick. Okay. 24:18.84 sidekqpodcast Okay, yeah, we'll need a standard array. Okay. 25:04.77 Brian Rose Ah, we got a 6 25:05.37 sidekqpodcast 6 okay, your answer was provided by ah our Patreon supporter and my dad wayne cren wogi ah Howard so someone named Howard and then. Now we need to figure out what is the ancestry of our character. We determine this with a d 100 or a 2 d 10 effect. 25:33.32 Brian Rose Um, two detail speech. 25:42.23 Brian Rose Out 56 25:46.16 sidekqpodcast 56 as I scroll down the list. A who Howard is a fear bog so he's a big ah ah, half giant like a fay inspired half giant. So Howard. 25:55.22 Brian Rose Lies. 26:03.21 sidekqpodcast The fear Bog okay, and then let's see so we know the job or role in society for Howard is that he works at this like arcane library and he is like 1 of the archivists or something like that. He just like works at the library or he's like the only 1 or what are you thinking. 26:23.82 Brian Rose Yeah, he's somebody that kind of like works there. Um like not like super high level but kind of like ah old adventure like he used to like he used to be the guy that used to go out to find the stuff and now he's kind of out to pasture tending to the. And into the other needs of the library. 26:40.18 sidekqpodcast Okay I see so then do we need to roll for an age range or do you feel like you said he was like a retired adventurer. So do you have a pretty good idea of like roughly how old he'd be or at like what point in his life. He'd be. 26:54.91 Brian Rose Oh I was thinking like a late seventy. Well I don't really know how fear bogs how long they actually live or anything like that. So I was thinking around like 70 ish. 27:09.87 sidekqpodcast Okay, I mean that's fine I mean we're happy to. Ah you know, research that ah later and determine it but like 70 s or like the equivalent of a seventy year old fear bull could you know because because that could easily be upwards of a couple hundred years or something like that. So um, okay, that's pretty cool. And then let's see so now that we know all these pieces of details. Um, we know Howard we know a fear bog we know archivist librarian and that they're basically like an elder. So with these another elder character for you this time around. Um. So with those pieces of details in mind. Can you describe the physical appearance. Obviously he's got the big glasses is that like a thing he's always had or is that something that's like recently developed as far as like oh I'm older in my years and I have to wear all these you know I have to wear these spectacles. 27:46.90 Brian Rose Ah, fucking. 28:06.74 Brian Rose Well, you know that ah like reading like deteriorates like the eyes as or as they get older, especially with bad light and it kind of like that. 28:14.60 sidekqpodcast Um, all right? They're having to read everything by candle light. Yeah. 28:19.22 Brian Rose So so it's it's more of a like when he like retired from the adventuring side kind of is by. 28:28.50 sidekqpodcast Um, okay, and that's when he adopted the glasses and is there like a pretty standard uniform that they wear in this library. 28:37.70 Brian Rose Now they're they're pretty like it's pretty free form Probably give them a cardigan just cause. 28:43.96 sidekqpodcast Oo a Cardigan Howard and a cardigan. Okay I like that so just like standard sort of clothes then for for fear bog gentleman. 28:52.62 Brian Rose Um, yeah, the the very stereotypical ah like what you would think of as like picture a Librarian in your brain. 29:02.41 sidekqpodcast Ah, so like Mr Rogers but Mr Rogers the size of a fear bulk. Yeah well I mean he's our fraternity brother so that would obviously be awesome, but okay. 29:07.85 Brian Rose That would be awesome. 29:15.45 sidekqpodcast Yeah, so like a big, a big guy. A big cuddly guy who who works in the library who works in the arcane library and is just chilling there and and doing his thing so okay and helping out with all the odd jobs and stuff around the library. Okay, and. If you had to describe Howard with 3 adjectives what 3 adjectives would you use. 29:39.34 Brian Rose Um, ah well I would use Bookish coming and eccentric so he's kind of yeah. 29:40.41 sidekqpodcast Okay. So Bookish cunning and eccentric is he the kind to like recommend reading materials to people who just like wander into the library I don't know if it's like a free for all people can just come and go as they please or if you have to be invited. And he's just kind of like you know since you said eccentric he's just there like oh if you're interested in knowing about ah you know the great Mindflare Wars You should go check out that section of the library and people were like I was just here to like learn about. Basic magic Swords Why are you recommending me this like weird stuff. Yeah. 30:25.86 Brian Rose No yeah, definitely he's he's that guy that kind of like he knows a lot of different things. Not ah like super deep into every subject but he kind of knows where to find all the different. He's a good finder. 30:37.55 sidekqpodcast So he's so yeah, they don't have need of like like a cataloging system. It's like all these people who work here like Howard you know they're just trained and knowing exactly where everything is inside the library. 30:54.75 Brian Rose Or they can be like more helpful. Yeah. 30:56.29 sidekqpodcast Oh they can be more helpful than just a basic catalog. So okay and you're able to like get books like read books check out books you know, look at magic items and stuff like that or you have to like belong to the library to be able to use them and stuff. So. 31:15.84 Brian Rose Um I think ah yeah, like most libraries kind of want a membership at least and the membership grants you different levels of access and help. 31:26.75 sidekqpodcast I See so like ah the the more of a frequent reader and quest taker you are the library Affords you ah more access to ah, better and better things. Okay, but. 31:40.72 Brian Rose More privileges. 31:43.66 sidekqpodcast And more privileges. Okay, yeah, that's pretty cool. Um all right? So let's see what is a valuable item piece of lower secret or ideal or concept that Howard would ascribe to if you want to roll for this randomly. It's the combo role where we do a d. 4 for the category and then a d six for the particular thing. 32:15.75 Brian Rose So d 4 is 1 and then you set a d 6 right? 5 32:21.60 sidekqpodcast Correct. Okay 5 oh interesting. So this is so one is a valuable item and then number 5 is suggested by our queen of the Patreon Goblin Katie Aka Katie Downey ah Howard has a wand sized rod of power. So what does that mean, why does Howard have that is that like his personal item or is it like his favorite item from the library that he just. Seems to always have on his person even when they tell him Howard that's not yours you need to put it back and he's like yeah yeah, yeah, I'll get around to it later and then he's just always there like oh what What is this thing doing in my pocket kind of a thing. 33:06.13 Brian Rose Ah, is it here. Ah well for his backstory like with him being like a former kind of adventurer like treasure treasure Seeker type. He might yeah it's one of his things from the past or like his kind of like. 33:12.78 sidekqpodcast Oh yeah. 33:21.34 Brian Rose Something that he's always like has always helped him out so he always keeps it on him. 33:23.15 sidekqpodcast I see. Okay, yeah, no totally can do that. Okay, so it's something from his past from his old adventuring days. So is that something that the library is very keen to get their hands on like they've made offers for Howard. Like hey in your last will and testament you should leave this thing to the library. So then that way we can have it. Okay. 33:48.42 Brian Rose Yeah, it it goes back to them at the end like like a lot of his belongs. 33:53.84 sidekqpodcast Oh okay, that's very cool and very like very generous and sweet of him to be able to do that I'm sure the player characters would be very keen to see if they could ah get that into their hands. But but we'll see um dungeon masters can. You know, leave that tantalizing dangling hook in front of them. Ah their players and see what they'll do so ok and of course we love for all of our npc characters to be able to offer up a side quest because you know we want them to be used and loved in all that stuff. So. What is going to be the quest that Howard is going to offer the player characters to go and do on his behalf if you want to roll for this randomly. You could roll a d twelve. It's the last dice to roll or if you've already feel the inspiration in you. Ah, you can just lay it on us of what you think the side quest is and. 34:50.35 Brian Rose Um, well the inspiration I kind of came up with is absolutely ridiculous. But I kind of like ridiculous um like 1 thing that he was never able to find is. 34:57.00 sidekqpodcast Sure. 35:05.74 Brian Rose His mom's recipe book. Um, Oliver old favorite you know, recipes back whenever he was like a kid and stuff like that that a traveling wizard like had stolen from them. 35:05.91 sidekqpodcast Okay, so. 35:12.74 sidekqpodcast Okay, so. 35:20.59 Brian Rose And like wiped her memory of all of the recipes. So he's constantly in search of this. Yeah. 35:25.53 sidekqpodcast Whoa that is a bad dude who goes around and just like steals cookbooks and wipes mom's memory of having the recipes in the first place that's just that's all kinds of cruel. Oh my goodness right. 35:41.75 Brian Rose Ah, it's simple. Accrual. 35:42.74 sidekqpodcast Simple but cruel a very strong motivating factor in many a D and D game. 35:52.90 Brian Rose Um, kind of like a wizard of oz type the Oz character. 35:57.67 sidekqpodcast Oh okay, all right? So Howard is ah meets the player characters in the library and he says you know what I really want out of life is just to get my mom's cookbook back. You know, ah wizardo the wizard. 36:12.58 sidekqpodcast Ah, you know, met us back when I was a kid and I couldn't do anything and he stole the cookbook and wiped her memory of ever having the recipes and I never got to eat you know rhubarb pie ever Again, you know the way that mom made it. Um. So he in his older years. He wants to reclaim this back because surely you know if this wizard still alive or has has become a lich or something you know it's what wizards are always want to do but ah what is going to be the reward So the players Confront this elusive legendary Mysterious Wizard. Get the recipe book back by. However, however, the means are what's going to be the reward for the players in undertaking such a mission. So. 36:57.90 Brian Rose Um, well I thought of 3 things that could entice them. You know and kind of keep it open ended that way it can fit into more different things. Um like it. 37:04.42 sidekqpodcast Okay. 37:08.78 Brian Rose Something as simple as like ah like if they're in the library looking for a certain thing they get like 5 sources of particular knowledge that the library holds that you know he knows exactly where it is and it will be faster for them to find. Or a powerful spell or scroll that they might be like rare that they're kind of like looking for or even like a magical weapon that the library could let in them. 37:38.60 sidekqpodcast Ooh. Okay, that's pretty cool and as you said it's very customizable so depending on what brings the party to the library in the first place. It's a good way to facilitate that. So. Okay I really like that versatility but we also have to consider the opposite. What's going to be the consequence of failure. Or refusing the call to the adventure like you know the cookbook is long destroyed the cookbook gets destroyed. They never confront the wizard the wizard escapes to another dimension like what's going to be the consequence of failure or just saying no outright it sounds like maybe 2 different levels. But. What? what are you thinking right. 38:17.98 Brian Rose Um, well like if they're looking for the knowledge it will make him where he like like he has them go through the official um like it's to help him bypass the official track you know, kind of um. 38:30.90 sidekqpodcast Oh oh. 38:34.39 Brian Rose Like like you know paperwork is like oh I can get through all this paperwork If you you know like paperwork or whatever the library demands Sometimes it's like a high cost and things kind of like that so it it might be a. 38:46.43 sidekqpodcast Mm. 38:50.63 Brian Rose Consequences. It doesn't offset that. 38:53.63 sidekqpodcast So to use the library like you were saying it could be like tedious amounts of paperwork. It could be like some sort of like hefty ah entrance fee or maybe even something like hey we need you to go hunt a hydra. And that's what we're going to take is payment for you being able to get into the library. So. It's like if you had just done this other side. Quest you could have bypassed all of that. But you know now you got to do the other the other normal way to get into the library. Whatever that means is. 39:22.32 Brian Rose Yeah, kind of like a a way past the speed bump. 39:25.12 sidekqpodcast Okay, but is it different is the consequence different like they say yes, they accept it but then something happens to the cookbook. It's destroyed ruined and unable to be recovered in some way. Is there a different consequence for that kind of. Failure. Is Howard going to use the the wan-sized rod of power on the party in some way. 39:47.31 Brian Rose Um, well. 39:53.17 Brian Rose Ah, no because he he's not really hateful I don't think like he's kind of like just real cheery kind of so he might be able to be like convinced like if you're able to read a little bit of it before you know we'd be like okay we we were able to find this bit. 39:58.42 sidekqpodcast Okay. 40:12.17 Brian Rose You know like we were quickly able to read like the book burned but we saved this little bit. You know like you might have a soft spot depending on how good their charisma or you know what other roles they kind of want to like throw kind of that way. 40:27.12 sidekqpodcast Okay, so if the book gets damaged depending on the level of damage. The book has suffered like he'll still be agreeable or help you out to some extent like he really wished the book would have been pristine. But if for some reason like this wizard put up a fight and for. Some odd reason didn't want to part with it then yeah, okay, so then that's that's the consequence of quote unquote failure or just some sort of falling failing forward sort of a sort of a thing. Okay are there. Any optional questions that you want to cover for ah for Howard or do you feel like he's pretty well-rounded as a character. 41:11.63 Brian Rose Um, um. 41:18.40 Brian Rose Um, no like I think he's pretty well like rounded kind of like his personality is is like real cheery Ti you know like I kind of like Jokester is I kind of like I can imagine that you know like. 41:23.15 sidekqpodcast M. 41:30.29 sidekqpodcast So kind of a cut up in the library. So like everyone else is like all serious business and he's kind of the one that's like hey let's you know we're here to have a we're here to have a fun time. Not a long time kind of a thing I'll just power. Okay, all right. 41:43.88 Brian Rose Yeah, knowledge is power. Yeah. 41:48.97 sidekqpodcast Well I think we've made a fantastic character in Howard of the archivist librarian that now I think it's time we throw him into a random encounter. Yeah. 42:04.95 sidekqpodcast And then that would be where I insert the other final ad break and then I take it into this section. So this is the random encounter part of the show this is where we like to do a little bit of a vignette some roleplay a scene with the character that we've made now through our combination of. Guidelines and dice rolls this unique npc so the question I put forward to you Mr Brian what kind of scene are you interested in portraying Howard in is it going to be Howard offering the side quest to one of the podcast adventure characters. Is it going to be Howard having a conversation with. Another member of the ah the library is it something from his past and you know like how we got this wand of ro this one sized rod of power or I don't know any number of things. What are what are you interested in showcasing Howard off in. 43:03.64 Brian Rose Um, ah, interacting with like ah some of the other library library staff could be kind of like an interesting way like the characters might notice him. 43:16.32 sidekqpodcast Okay, so you want to do a scene where it's like Howard just kind of mingling and talking with some other library characters kind of like ah not that I've played the games but like a final fantasy s cut scene where like the players enter into a scene they see something play out in front of them. And then once it's done. They have the option then to be like oh let's go talk to this Howard guy and go figure out what he's all about okay all right? So then I suppose I will need to invent a character. 43:39.77 Brian Rose Yeah. 43:48.81 sidekqpodcast On the spot and you know what I like to do dice rolling as well. So Let me see if I can here and now very quickly use my own dice and I pulled up our ancestry table that we used earlier. So Let's see what I can get ah is there are there any restrictions on the library as far as like. You know is it? Do you allow for like really weird ah ancestries and stuff like that to be workers in the library or like it's all very like standard and quote unquote normal sorts of people that you would find in the library. 44:23.36 Brian Rose Um, ah yeah, they they allow for anybody. It's ah it's a library. 44:25.62 sidekqpodcast Okay, and as I'm rolling my dice here. Okay, interesting all right? So I got a where was the number I saw you here on the screen and where did you go to I rolled in 84 and it gives me a choice of Bullywug grung or grippy which are like the 3 Ah. You know, ah Amphibian type ancestries and I rolled a one which means Bully W and I got a one on a coin flip which means a dude so we're going to have a little dude Bully W ah Librarian as Well. Ah, we'll call him. 45:03.95 sidekqpodcast We'll call him barth so his name is Barth and the little other archivist and we'll do now a scene between Howard and Barth so we imagine this grand vast arcane library renowned throughout the land. And ah, they employ many kinds of people people from far and wide come to the library to the arcane sanctuary ah to be able to acquire knowledge. Ah adventurers love to pledge their allegiance to serve the library to help like recover lost knowledge. And dangerous weapons and artifacts and whatnot and you know this library has a very extensive and good network. Um, and it's also a place where adventurers ah might also like to retire and so as a group of fresh faced adventurers are beginning their journey in life. Um, their grand epic quest to save the world. They entered the library and they see this very interesting scene playing out between Barth who is this Ah, but bullywog. Ah frog ah man in his robes and stuff like that and he's he is like having to stand on top of. Ah, table on top of a set of books just to like sort of be eye line with Howard with how tall he is as a fear bog and he's probably going to be like now Howard you know that we have a very precise. Um. 46:33.90 sidekqpodcast Way of doing things around here and you can't just be leading people off on silly goose chases off of some sort of fable or or or some sort of tale that you remember from your adventuring days. We have a very sacred and important boody in this library. 46:52.61 Brian Rose Oh we. But that's where's the fun of that You know we we have all this knowledge right here at our fingertips like if we don't share it with the world. What's the point. 47:05.75 sidekqpodcast Well, ah, but but but the point the point is to safeguard and keep Knowledge. We just got out of the Grand Apocalyptic War Not even but a century ago and and and you would just really nearly just give it out to the first the First. Ah. Po dunk farmer that walks in through the door. 47:31.24 Brian Rose Um, but they make the best stories we we have to like we collect the stories. They do the cool things. It builds the library. 47:38.92 sidekqpodcast Ah, um, but um, he probably like does some sort of exasperated thing with his lips like to express ah him himself and he'll just say like oh oh Howard I just know me he just gets frustrated a little bit. Ah, but he just kind of like pouts and sits down on the books that are on the table and he's just kind of waiting to see how Howard will react because he howard can tell he's just like he's just like this kind of guy that like cares about the rules and he cares about the library so much so to him encountering a person like Howard. It's baffling to him why Howard is the way he is yeah. 48:19.38 Brian Rose Yeah. 48:25.45 Brian Rose Because the knowledge is power and we we have to share our power. What's the point of knowing all this if we don't let other people see it. 48:35.56 sidekqpodcast And he'll huff and he'll collect himself and he'll be like all right, very good now he looks down at the stack of books. He's sitting on and he's like I Mark can't carry these and I can't put them up on the high shelf. Can you do that for me, please. 48:54.91 Brian Rose Oh always always here to lend a hand. 48:56.93 sidekqpodcast Oh whoa now all right, very good. He bows and he goes good day and then he'll just kind of like hop along and disappear off into some stacks where he's going to go you know do another job. And he just kind of leaves like this more menial sort of task. Ah for Howard to be able to do Barth was probably capable of doing it. It would have taken him like 3 times as long to do it but he leaves it into Howard's capable hands and so then ah is there any other thing that Howard will. Kind of just say after Barth leaves or in his direction or anything before this quote unquote cut scene ends. 49:44.25 Brian Rose Um, he might notice the um, the adventure is kind of in and kind of like hey you look new here where this is a face I don't recognize what brings you to the library. 50:00.14 sidekqpodcast Perfect so very much like our beloved ah jrpgs of old Howard just very ah graciously opens himself up to the adventurer characters and he's going to hopefully become their new. Best friends. 50:14.83 Brian Rose That would be awesome. 50:16.51 sidekqpodcast And seen so there we go we got to like do a little bit of ah a vignette and ah Barth the the bullyw archivist sounds like a good foil to a cool eccentric Howard and Barth is strikes me as the. Kind of little dude that's like cares, a lot about rules and regulations and how things are supposed to be done and the paperwork that Barth cares about people doing things the right way and won't offer this shortcut so the players go and talk to Barth. He'll be like. 50:40.13 Brian Rose And the paperwork. 50:53.20 sidekqpodcast No, you have to do all these steps and the players are like this guy is insane. We should go talk to Howard because he'll make things easier for us very very by the book. So yeah, so we made it through the random encounter and what do you think about being. 51:00.12 Brian Rose Very by the book. 51:11.58 sidekqpodcast Ah, back on the podcast after so many years and getting to make Howard tonight. What do you? What do you think your time's been like. 51:21.30 Brian Rose Um, ah it's It's been absolutely great like I love it like coming up with different characters for different Worlds is is ah always a blast. 51:31.90 sidekqpodcast Do you think if you get an opportunity to play d and d that you would ah encourage your Dm or if you're the Dm that you would try and put Howard in your game or maybe you would play a player character version of Howard you think. 51:46.91 Brian Rose Um, ah that would be a lot of fun. Um I probably would always like doing like things that are just kind of like off the wall um, kind of like just like oh let's explore it weirdly and I think you could pipe into that like. 52:04.14 sidekqpodcast Right? Yeah because everyone's first couple of D and D characters are like you know these dark brooding characters. You know, reflections or power fantasy versions of themselves and then the time goes on where like yeah I want to be like a giant Fearbog Librarian guy who ares. 52:04.77 Brian Rose Not too serious, but. 52:23.15 sidekqpodcast Coke bottle glasses and has a little wan-sized Rod of power in his pocket and he's old but that's who I want to play. 52:33.15 Brian Rose Um, it doesn't have to make sense. It's it's escapism. 52:34.90 sidekqpodcast Yeah, all right? Well as we're here in the final thoughts section of the show I always love to leave it. You know to the guest for any final comments or feedback and you know if there's anything that you want to plug if you want to be found on social media. Not that it's required. I'm finding myself being an older middle aged 30 year old dude maybe not middle aged 30 year old maybe I do feel like a middle aged 30 year old do somehow juxtaposed but the point being like I'm not having to worry about the hustle and the grind of the algorithm. But. You know if you want to be found if there's anything you want to promote if there's passions or causes you want to be made have us be made aware about laid on us let us hear it 53:21.57 Brian Rose Um, well at some point I might revive my Youtube channel which is Texas rose miniatures. Um and then ah like I am on the Instagram but it's it's pretty private as a. 53:36.69 sidekqpodcast Sure, Yeah, no, we totally understand you know and in respect that you know we love teachers on this podcast and being a music Dude we love music educators for sure so parents out there guardians or you know friends out there. 53:36.70 Brian Rose Public educator you kind of have to be. 53:56.50 sidekqpodcast If you have a musician and your life give them a hug tell them good job and to get back into practice get into the practice room they need it they they may think they're good, but everyone could stand to use a little more practice. 54:09.66 Brian Rose Oh the best need the practice. 54:13.84 sidekqpodcast Yep, all right? Well, ah, thank you so much Brian for returning to the podcast and ah thank you so much and I can't wait to have you back on making even more interesting in pcs. 54:28.19 Brian Rose Ah, that'd be a lot of fun. 54:28.45 sidekqpodcast All right? So I'll go ahead.
