00:00.00 sidekqpodcast Hello everyone and welcome to another exciting episode of sidekicks and side quests the best unofficial dungs and dragons podcast and my humbly biased opinion I've got a wonderful guest for you this week but before I get to my guest I got to leave you in suspense with the ad read insert break here to. Put something clever all right? Well I am joined by family by a blast from the past. So ah, for those who are new to the podcast and haven't had the pleasure of being introduced to you. The first time would you care to introduce yourself to our lovely audience tell us. Who it is that you are and what is it that you do. 00:40.89 Seth Crenwelge Ah, yeah, my name's Seth Krenmogi shared last names with said podcast host cousins and I'm a humble college student about to graduate next. 00:47.74 sidekqpodcast M. 00:56.50 Seth Crenwelge Should be this time next year sometime about aspiring writer and human being trying to make it through this Sisyphian task of life. 01:08.10 sidekqpodcast Yeah, cause I you were one of the people that I had the opportunity to speak with in the beginning part of the pandemic where I was just like going through so many recordings and getting a backlog ah ready. Um. 01:20.37 Seth Crenwelge Yes. 01:22.80 sidekqpodcast So that was really awesome to get to talk to you and you brought us ah ignum. Ah, last time. Yeah. 01:27.19 Seth Crenwelge Ignum Eldais yes, which that character has since been long finished and done what he was a part of when I was because I was still like running him as a character when I was when I did that episode I think by the time the episode came out. 01:38.21 sidekqpodcast Right? right. 01:44.82 Seth Crenwelge Um, his story had wrapped up and finished. But yeah I I have actually gone back and listened to that episode and I was like Wow the characters changed kind of a lot since then. 01:45.83 sidekqpodcast M. 01:57.19 sidekqpodcast Very cool and ah yeah and I was just remembering you were like oh I'm in college and you know I think maybe we were trying to figure out like oh were you settled on this one major or the other but it sounds like you're you're getting ready to graduate with a degree in English or ah literature or something. 02:13.40 Seth Crenwelge Yeah, yeah English with an emphasis in creative writing I was going to do a ah minor in classics. But that's kind of complex to do here at my University So I'm not going to do that. 02:16.70 sidekqpodcast Ooh. 02:27.41 sidekqpodcast Ah, well, you should be pleased to know that since your episode I did have the opportunity to speak with a fellow UNLV alumni in the form of ah Johnny Stanton the fourth who did have a small brief stint of time. Ah there. Um. 02:41.70 Seth Crenwelge Um, no very cool. 02:43.39 sidekqpodcast So yeah, that's that's pretty cool. So there's a there's a Kevin bacon degree of a you know separation there. Yeah so pretty cool. We love Johnny Stanton you know he's doing great stuff in the d and d community so of of course since you're a returning guest. 02:48.41 Seth Crenwelge Sick. 02:59.79 sidekqpodcast Um, you know, not that it's a preferential thing because you're family. Um, but you know we like to work our way back through the questions as as we're getting you know to reacquaint ourselves with the guests. So before we started rolling. You were saying Oh. It's been a while since I've played so I feel like that's a pretty easy segue into the last time since we talked. Again, way back when and 2020 have you had the opportunity to play any D and D or any other kinds of ttrpg since the last time we spoke. 03:20.60 Seth Crenwelge And. 03:29.23 Seth Crenwelge Um, I yeah I think the last time I probably played was d and d was probably in either Twenty Twenty or 2021 and then I have since branched out and have been playing a multitude of other tabletop rpg games with my friend group. 03:45.55 sidekqpodcast Okay. 03:47.15 Seth Crenwelge Online Yeah, we kind of straight away from dungeons and dragons for a while and have been let's see what did we play? we've we've played Star Wars Saga edition. We've done dark Heresy The the War hammer. Ah. 04:05.18 sidekqpodcast Ooh. 04:06.22 Seth Crenwelge Tabletop and we've done black crusade which is another warhammer one and call of cthulhu and just like a bunch like we've kind of been dabbling and kind of throwing our our feet into every water every pond splashing in every pond we can. 04:15.55 sidekqpodcast Mm. 04:22.10 sidekqpodcast Yeah. 04:25.38 Seth Crenwelge Haven't gotten a chance to get back around playing D and D I'd love to do it in person. But my in-person group is kind of very also also a bunch of college students and all like stem. Yeah, which is just dreadful to try and. 04:33.63 sidekqpodcast Sure you've got competing majors in competing schedules I'm sure. 04:42.79 Seth Crenwelge Line up during the semester. So. 04:43.60 sidekqpodcast Okay, well that sounds great. Yeah, and and being able to explore other games. You know, just helps to sharpen your role-playing creative thinking muscles anyway. 04:54.40 Seth Crenwelge Oh absolutely I like the way I approach characters and like everything and even the way I run games I was so different after having done it because we would do a thing where like 1 person would run 1 and everyone else would play. And then it would would kind of switch Dms every few weeks like we'd have little stories so pretty much everybody in our I think group of 4 got a chance to run in every game system that we played which was actually really fun like getting to familiarize yourself with. 05:12.62 sidekqpodcast I. 05:28.61 Seth Crenwelge Making a character and then like how to actually run it and just different skills you learn and that carry over to different rpgs too. So it's definitely changed like how I approach making a character and how I approach like even running a game. 05:41.55 sidekqpodcast Yeah, and as you're familiar with this podcast. You know being called something like sidekicks and sidequest have you come across any new or interesting npcs or psykick characters whether they be from. Again, 1 of the many games you've played ah on the tablet top virtual or otherwise are ah video games movie film, television, etc and why has this new npc or sideki character stuck with you? yeah. 06:11.16 Seth Crenwelge Um o the the new star wars game. Ah did I survivor um the night sister. What's her name. Ah Maron um I really like her and I really like. 06:16.85 sidekqpodcast Ok. Okay. 06:28.30 Seth Crenwelge Sear ah from that from those games I played both of them. Um, and I know I think it was was it was it this year that that the new one came out. It might have been I don't remember. yeah yeah I remember playing that one and like I like the whole story with like. 06:33.44 sidekqpodcast Um. 06:36.16 sidekqpodcast The second one came out this year. That's correct and. 06:46.00 Seth Crenwelge Maron I love star wars so like anything more star wars is amazing. Pro star wars I don't know about pro disney breath. 06:46.30 sidekqpodcast Of course I think we're pretty I think it's safe to say the Kren woes are pretty pro star wars family the younger generation I know for sure like again, you know, just just to tell the listeners because they can't see it but tell the listeners. You know the the age. 07:00.71 Seth Crenwelge Yeah. 07:05.30 sidekqpodcast Range ah between us. Ah my my guest my cousin Seth and myself I can visibly recall in my memory ah being over at my grandmother and grandfather's house in central Texas. And ah it being summer and I see little itty Bitty Seth running around and then we have the prequel trilogy movies going on and for me, it had been like you know a decade or so when those had come out so it was like yeah just you know so yes, definitely. 07:24.30 Seth Crenwelge Um, yeah. 07:35.70 sidekqpodcast Star Wars has been a big part of our family for sure. So. 07:38.15 Seth Crenwelge Oh absolutely Yeah, so like in recent memory I like those I think those games I'm pretty sure that that whole game series made me cry at the end I Just like I love I Love those characters and they were really well written too like just I ah and since I now. 07:46.38 sidekqpodcast So. 07:55.14 Seth Crenwelge And English major I like actually look for like what makes a character good and stuff so like being able to get into characters and what makes them good. What makes them emotional What connects you to them is something I always look for in media now because it's ways to improve my own writing too. So like a. 08:08.90 sidekqpodcast Yeah. 08:15.10 Seth Crenwelge Just viewing those and also they're like badass. They're just like cool they have. There's some cool scenes like like sear fights like Darth Vader and like you you get to play and fight Darth Vader and it's so cool anything with Darth Vader is cool though like you can't really can't really go wrong with him. Ah. 08:28.39 sidekqpodcast Um, of course yep no. 08:34.75 Seth Crenwelge But yeah I think lot I think last time I probably I think I said I'm trying to remember I think I said shepherd from mass effect. Um, he's also another good one and of course like Annakin and North Vader are classics and Luke. But yeah. 08:48.10 sidekqpodcast Um, yeah for sure. Yeah, especially in between all the other star wars you know, ah universe shows that you know been coming out on Disney plus. 08:52.29 Seth Crenwelge You go on about Star Wars. There's a lot. 09:02.56 Seth Crenwelge Oh boy, that's a whole another conversation That's ah that is that is a whole other situation going on there. But yeah, yeah, the games are good I will say that the games that they have released are good. 09:03.79 sidekqpodcast For sure. That's a whole other podcast. Yeah, and indeed and same thing. What's been a new or interesting side. Quest or b plot element that has really you know, captured your attention since. 2020 ah, you know whether again like it's from one of your games. It's a b plot element and ah in a film television show etc and you know what? what makes this 1 interesting or different or stand out. 09:42.73 Seth Crenwelge Um, oh boy I don't know about from games. But I have I have done a bit of a reading. It fits the fits the bill. Um, and there's a book series that I really have fallen in love with these fast few years in science fiction. 09:52.34 sidekqpodcast Um. 09:59.40 Seth Crenwelge Ah, it's called suneaer and it's to to put it simply. It's like the Roman Empire in space with Eldridge horrors abound. It is a a lot more interesting that I'm making it sound but for the sake of. 10:07.18 sidekqpodcast Ah, ok. 10:17.80 Seth Crenwelge Me not rambling on for 40 minutes about about it. It's it's really interesting and the main character Hadrian has this whole plot where like he's essentially trying to stop these abominations from taking over the universe on a very roundabout way and there's like aliens and everything and I just. 10:29.40 sidekqpodcast Okay, so. 10:36.91 Seth Crenwelge Really love So I don't know if it's a B plot but the way the author christopher rockio develops like Alien culture and like perceives it through Humanity's eyes because the series starts and Hadrian like. 10:49.33 sidekqpodcast Oh. 10:54.97 Seth Crenwelge The the Alien War has been going on for a long time and he thinks he can make peace with them. But then you later learn that these aliens are so drastically different from humans that the main character was just like projecting his own views of humanity onto this Alien species and thinking that. Like they we could actually make peace but you actually learn that the aliens link The Alien Language doesn't have a a word for like surrender or like peace like their word for essentially like a compromise is. Essentially amounts to like less than like you are Submit. It's like submission So like a compromise to them is like submission and like surrender and just seeing the cultural differences with that like it's not really like it is a main part of the story. But if you don't like really take time to think about it. 11:35.70 sidekqpodcast M. 11:51.20 Seth Crenwelge Doesn't really like the full grasp of it doesn't really hit you and I really like that the books make you think I've been attracted to books that make my mind work recently and it's sort of Duneesque as well. It gives it does have dune vibes with like very much swords in space like laser swords in space. 11:55.44 sidekqpodcast Um. 12:00.14 sidekqpodcast I was. I. 12:11.40 Seth Crenwelge Um, just better 5 Yeah. 12:17.13 sidekqpodcast I was going to say that reminds me because ah the d and d I've been doing lately is I've been running one on one d and d via Google docs with a friend and we just came across this interesting point the other day when you said like oh the alien language has no basis for like peace or compromise or surrender. 12:25.37 Seth Crenwelge Um, oh. 12:34.45 sidekqpodcast And so ah, ah my my player has come across the infernal language and so I ruled because she was like you know her character was asking like oh do you have like a concept for love and ah so then the character the Npc responded and was saying like oh no, we don't have like. That is a foreign concept to like the Evil gods who constructed this language they have no, they have no basis for what love is and then he lists a bunch of other words like satiated satiated or appeased or so ah you know, like other words that like dance around it but nothing that truly means. Ah, love So it was kind of like eye- openingening discovering this character. We Also I roughly in the moment came up with an analogy of like oh infernal and abyssal is like the same relationship between Portuguese and Spanish like they sound similar but they're actually very quite different and so an infernal speaker will. 13:21.72 Seth Crenwelge Oh yeah. 13:29.27 sidekqpodcast Call like an abysle language speaker lazy and then an abysle language speaker will say like oh the infernals like 2 prim proper and you know doesn't have a real grasp on language and so I thought that was kind of ah a funny insight I came up with. But yeah, yeah, so the things you can learn from. 13:36.91 Seth Crenwelge Yeah. 13:42.61 Seth Crenwelge Yeah. 13:46.00 sidekqpodcast Your favorite book series. You could just as easily apply into a D and D setting especially if you're like you know you're going to crusade down into hell and like we've got the devils on the rope and then in in infernal you learn you you learn that like oh we don't have a word for. 13:49.96 Seth Crenwelge Um, oh absolutely and like. 14:02.45 sidekqpodcast We do have a word for surrender. But it means when we're in the dominant position not from when we're in the the weak position or something like that. 14:06.60 Seth Crenwelge Yeah, yeah, like and I'm learning Spanish right now or least trying to because I have to and like learning another language and then like thinking like experiencing how that changes how you think because it does it play into like. 14:13.87 sidekqpodcast I. 14:26.30 Seth Crenwelge You know people say knowing another language is like having another soul you know and I agree with that to an extent of like it certainly changes how you think and how you perceive the meaning of words which is something I think about a lot because I'm an egos major. So yeah. 14:30.38 sidekqpodcast Um. 14:42.32 sidekqpodcast There we go and then the final way that we'll round out this personal interview section catch up bit is what has been a new or interesting Hobby or passion that you've gotten in your life and why is this ah stuck with you. 14:58.73 Seth Crenwelge Um, ah, who boy um I mean I love writing it's not really new I've been writing since I was like a tiny child. Um I remember writing at Grandmother my omi's house on the couch. 15:11.46 sidekqpodcast So. 15:15.28 Seth Crenwelge And I was very very young making terrible terrible stories that I still have to this day and I look back at to humble myself of my my sixth grade writing. Yeah I have recently started playing tabletop warhammer 40 k which is really. Like I never expected to be like a war gamer and like a table like like that kind of tabletop gamer. But my friend is really into it and he actually bought me some miniatures to like because you have to like cut them out of the sprus and then glue them together and build them and then paint them I haven't painted him. 15:36.91 sidekqpodcast Um. 15:46.89 sidekqpodcast You paint them. Oh all, right? Okay, so you're following in tradition where you just acquire them. You make them but you never actually paint them. 15:51.10 Seth Crenwelge I've painted Yes I've painted some I've painted some. It's just very time consuming to paint them like it takes an astronomical amount of time to do one and I have a lot cause he got me a bunch and I was like oh cool we played some low point games and then. 15:58.40 sidekqpodcast So. 16:10.58 Seth Crenwelge I um was like oh I'll get some more and I got some more and now I have like a full 2000 point army um, and we play pretty regularly I go over to his house where we go to our local game store and we play and it's it's it's a lot of fun like I really like it. It's just. 16:24.55 sidekqpodcast Um. 16:30.43 Seth Crenwelge Is number one really expensive. It is so expensive and it takes a lot of time. Not only do you have to buy them which is great like crazy amounts of money in my opinion for plastic you have to then spend the time to cut them out glue them together and then paint them. And then learn the rules and then like it' it was a I did not think I would want to get into it like I thought when he bought me some I build them would play I'd forget about it but I like kept coming back to it I was like it's kind of fun, just hang out with my friends and like imaginary shoot stuff you know and I play. 16:52.52 sidekqpodcast Um. 17:01.14 sidekqpodcast And. 17:05.33 Seth Crenwelge The Adeptus Sororas the sisters of battle if you know what that means they're the. 17:11.41 sidekqpodcast Oh okay, see my only experience goes back to my junior high dayss and this is takes us back way back when to the early 2000 and ah you know my friends wanted to play. 17:17.87 Seth Crenwelge Yeah, prehistoric. 17:23.31 sidekqpodcast And ah, my parents got me some imperial guard I Guess that's what they were called then so I had like a little bit of Imperial guard and ah so then what our hangouts would be ah whenever we got together to play. Ah, 3 of my friends would be busy arguing about which characters you couldn't couldn't use and then the remaining 2 of us would be like Wow look at this thing I made and I painted it and it's so cool and so yeah, eventually that all fizzled out and I ended up selling my stuff to another kid the neighborhood I'm sure for a deal a steal. Um, so you know. Obviously thank you Mom and dad for ah you know, making that sacrifice to buy that stuff only for me to then months later turn around and sell it. So. 18:02.00 Seth Crenwelge I'm sure it was a lot cheaper back then I'm sure it was a lot cheaper back then the prices have gone up for everything reason. Yeah yeah, um I I don't think I'll ever get heavily into it simply because it takes too much time as it. It takes so much time. 18:05.99 sidekqpodcast Oh yeah, yeah inflation you know don't you know for sure. 18:15.20 sidekqpodcast So. 18:19.19 Seth Crenwelge But like what I have now is probably what I willll keep for until like we don't play anymore and then I'll sell it. But that's fun. It's ah it's a hobby I hang out with my friends and we do it So we're not like competitive like super competitive I Know there's like tournaments and stuff never been to one of those. 18:24.99 sidekqpodcast Um. 18:31.32 sidekqpodcast You and painting competitions like you know, just people who spend their time painting miniatures and then you know submitting them for contests and stuff. 18:37.22 Seth Crenwelge And lost. 18:44.33 Seth Crenwelge Yeah, mine would probably not not not do very well in painting competitions. They're they're they're passable at a distance. 18:54.30 sidekqpodcast So sure. Yeah, they have like the weird eyeballs that faced different directions or whatever. So yeah. 19:01.30 Seth Crenwelge Ah, yeah, that's just like little dots. It's it works as you know you're not looking at them up close most of the time. 19:08.32 sidekqpodcast Right? All right? Well it sounds like we did awesome here in the personal catch up interview section that now it's time to head into a little bit and now it's time to head into some Npc creation. 19:23.61 Seth Crenwelge Let's do it. 19:23.94 sidekqpodcast And npc creation is brought to you by you the podcast audience and our patrons from patreon so of course I have to give a shout out to all of my fine supporters. Okay, excellent, all right? well without further ado we begin this. 20:41.10 Seth Crenwelge Yes, oh I'm so ready for the path of random. 20:52.20 sidekqpodcast Dog and pony show with a role of the d 20 to figure out what is going to be the name of our character today. 21:00.10 Seth Crenwelge Oh boy, um, let me grab my d 20 and roll that bad boy I got a 2 21:10.27 sidekqpodcast 2 Okay, your answer was provided by previous guest Joshua Simon's penance. Yeah. 21:19.34 Seth Crenwelge Penance that is a fucking cool name. Can I curse sorry. 21:26.65 sidekqpodcast Ah I'll bleep it out I try and keep this show at least semi Accepts accessible to children though. It's not exclusively marketed to children. Um, so yep. 21:32.45 Seth Crenwelge That that is very fair that is very fair. 21:39.68 sidekqpodcast Ah, okay, and then the next thing we get to roll for is the ancestry of the character. So this is where you get to do a 2 d ten d 100 roll and this is where it could swing. Wildly so let's figure out what ancestry penance is. 21:46.55 Seth Crenwelge Oh what. 21:53.31 Seth Crenwelge Okay, let's do this d 100 um 62 22:01.20 sidekqpodcast 62 is I scroll down the list. Ah okay, so penance is a quake off? Yes, so those are the bear like anthropomorphic. 22:10.25 Seth Crenwelge A Qua goth I mean oh wait is that know I think I had um I think I ran a like Qua goth prince as a villain in one of my. 22:16.13 sidekqpodcast Guys from the underdark. 22:27.70 Seth Crenwelge And pains once um. 22:29.75 sidekqpodcast Oh so quick. Jog down memory lane and you'll be like yeah I know exactly what these guys are all about ah QUAGGOTH. 22:35.17 Seth Crenwelge Yeah, how do you spell quagoth. 22:48.43 Seth Crenwelge Oh I was thinking of something else. Never never mind but they look cool. Ah okay, cool Quaga Bare Humanoids cool. 22:54.12 sidekqpodcast I'll just cut that out of the podcast. 23:00.35 sidekqpodcast All right? yep and then let's see what is the job or role in society for penance a quag goth. Ah that will just be a regular d 10 role. 23:10.71 Seth Crenwelge Regular d 10 okay. I got a 5. 23:18.21 sidekqpodcast 5 o interesting okay, a little bit of synergy here your answer provided by our Patreon supporter your aunt my mom ah Pam Cren Wogi ah penance is a clairvoyant. 23:28.60 Seth Crenwelge Hack down. 23:34.10 Seth Crenwelge A clairvoyant. 23:36.72 sidekqpodcast Yeah, so I guess looks into the ethereal and sees the future or something okay and then let's see the age range of our character. We determine that with the role of a D eight. 23:41.93 Seth Crenwelge Yeah, some sort of future site huh. 23:52.91 Seth Crenwelge D Eight K one shot. 24:00.32 sidekqpodcast Child so a child clairvoyance named penance. That's a quag goth named oh cut that named out because I already already said named. Okay, so with these key pieces of information in mind when you hear penance. Lairvoyant Child Qua Goth what is the physical description that comes to mind. 24:28.00 Seth Crenwelge Oh um, I am getting like ritual vibes from this I think this quagoth I think Penance is ah small and like scarred. From a difficult life perhaps from self-flagellation for some future sin that they have seen themselves committing and are are making forcing penance upon themselves for. 24:54.20 sidekqpodcast Mm. 25:04.11 Seth Crenwelge Because they have not committed it yet, but they will commit it as they are believer in destiny. 25:10.80 sidekqpodcast Mm Wow That's pretty metal pretty dark. So yeah, so then interesting for player characters to run across because it's like well how can you punish yourself for something you haven't done yet. Well interesting. Okay, so. 25:25.27 Seth Crenwelge Moral Current Rhythm church. 25:27.76 sidekqpodcast Small child life and so any any particular I don't I'm not entirely familiar if quagots are necessarily bound to wear clothes. But do you imagine? Ah, this penance is wearing clothes or robes or anything of that sort of nature. 25:43.35 Seth Crenwelge Ah, if anything I think it would be some sort of ah like bro if not like some tattered sort of shabby under dark like stolen from some drow ah like too big for them sort of robes. 25:59.60 sidekqpodcast Oh. 26:01.50 Seth Crenwelge Ah, and they probably carry around if they're clairvoyant some sort of like ah ritualistic bones or something or dice or runes something akin that that would like fit the underdark like if you're gonna take a bunch of stones and. 26:11.16 sidekqpodcast Okay, so. 26:19.00 Seth Crenwelge Carve runes into them and cast them to see the future kind of thing. 26:20.51 sidekqpodcast Okay, so that's how she sees the future. She gets a bunch of runic stones and then like rolls on like dice and then reads it based on how how it appears. 26:31.49 Seth Crenwelge Um, yeah, reads the reading the runes of the future. 26:37.92 sidekqpodcast Gosh Penances read the Rune a little bit. Why don't you but um Cha I am a dad I am allowed to make dad jokes on my own podcast. Okay, and then let's see if you. 26:43.66 Seth Crenwelge You You are certainly. 26:53.80 sidekqpodcast Had to describe penance with 3 adjectives what 3 adjectives would you use. 26:59.24 Seth Crenwelge Oh boy, Um, let's see ah discrete I I think that's an adjective. Ah. 27:02.94 sidekqpodcast Let's challenge the English major and see how good their internal. The firstaurus is. 27:14.65 sidekqpodcast Someone to being discreet. Okay, yeah. 27:16.36 Seth Crenwelge Call that one? Yeah um, ooh, let's see I'm trying to go through my catalog of you know my mind palace of words. Um, and by my mind palace of words I of course mean. Just all the words that I Google every day ch the source stock I'd do that saves my life so much. Um I think. 27:35.28 sidekqpodcast Sure thesaurus.com okay 27:49.61 Seth Crenwelge Guilty as guilty and adjective to be they feel like yeah guilty into yeah guilt Ridden Yeah I think Guilt Ridden and. 27:54.28 sidekqpodcast To feel guilty guiltridden. Okay. 28:08.47 Seth Crenwelge Oh boy, What's a word for like somebody who's lonely but wants to reach out. Um. 28:13.98 sidekqpodcast Mm it lonely but wants to reach out like a feeling of being trapped isolated yearning. 28:21.86 Seth Crenwelge Um, yeah, yeah, like I So yeah, like yearning yearning is a good one yearning for like connection but also like afraid of it so like year. 28:30.43 sidekqpodcast Mm. Okay, okay so discretet guilt Riddden and but they're yearning like they want to connect but they're too freighted. Okay, all right now we get to go back to some dice rolling. 28:39.54 Seth Crenwelge Um, yeah. 28:45.99 sidekqpodcast So all of our Npcs have to have something cool on them. So what is going to be a valuable item piece of law secret or ideal or concept that the character would ascribe to so you roll the d 4 first for the category and then a d six for the particular thing. 29:01.14 Seth Crenwelge Okay, has got d 4 2 o 5 29:05.59 sidekqpodcast This is going to be a piece of lore. 5 ha. Okay, well your answer was provided by previous guest Elizabeth Horsley penance knows where a portal to the astral plane is but it's only big enough for your hand to fit through. 29:28.83 Seth Crenwelge Ah, okay, ah ineath a lot of stints. Yeah yeah, the underdoors full of crazy crazy stuff. 29:30.34 sidekqpodcast And and you know with Underdark Shenanigans that would make I feel like that tracks pretty well like that seems like something you would be able to find in the underdark. 29:44.42 sidekqpodcast So that's cool and you know she's a child So obviously at her height perspective of the world like she would probably be the one to notice. 29:55.62 Seth Crenwelge Yeah, it's like in some weird hole that only a child can crawl in and. 30:03.29 sidekqpodcast Yeah, but it's only big now is it only big enough for us a hand her size or is it like ah only big enough for a hand for an adult. 30:10.27 Seth Crenwelge As ah, that would be a good question that I would ask you if I was a player and you or the Dm of the game. 30:16.12 sidekqpodcast Oh, and then I had had the rule. Okay, well then Dungeon Masters It's up to you for this piece of lore. How big is the hand-sized portal to the astral plane. 30:22.78 Seth Crenwelge Is it because then it's like you can only get like a like maybe a few fingers in if it's a child hand size then what's in the what's in the hand size portal something. 30:34.86 sidekqpodcast Um, don't know maybe you the an interesting question that I've ah been brought up in this game that I've been playing you know the logistical arcane mechinations of how. 30:39.79 Seth Crenwelge Smaller than a hand size. 30:49.53 sidekqpodcast Ah, the bag of holding Works. You know the idea that it's like oh it's just a pocket somewhere within the astral C of where your items are sitting and I figured that there must be some sort of hyjinks that ensue when someone figures out like. This random magic hole and they reach in and they're actually pulling things out of somebody else's bag of holding or something like that. 31:07.78 Seth Crenwelge Bag of walding o it's it's a portal. It's a hand size portal into some somebody's bag of holding Mcguffin. Yeah. 31:15.61 sidekqpodcast Like a big bad evil guy or something like that and then suddenly you pull the important evil item and now the bad guy goes into a rage because like hey this important thing Mcguffin is now missing and I'm going to tear up the countryside to try and find it. So. 31:29.22 Seth Crenwelge The the Heroes don't know what it is so they can't You know they don't know that they shouldn't take it or they or they do? Yeah yeah yeah, here's. 31:37.58 sidekqpodcast Right? Or they just get useful items out of it that they don't have any reason to normally get like well I just found this hole in this magic A holy Avenger was in it. So I guess I take it now Finders keepers. Yeah. 31:50.59 Seth Crenwelge Here's a yeah here's a hole here's a bunch of magic items here you go. 31:57.41 sidekqpodcast Pretty cool ideas. You know we give those away for free on this podcast. So hopefully that that will make it into your game. So okay and then as we've had the time to learn about this character this next question you could totally do on your own if you want it or if you want to keep with the theme of random. 31:58.94 Seth Crenwelge That is true. 32:16.28 sidekqpodcast We need a side quest that penance would be willing to offer or or recruit player characters to go and do on her behalf. So if you want to roll randomly the last dice d 12 or if you're inspired, go ahead and lay it on us or do a combo. Both. 32:31.83 Seth Crenwelge Let's roll and see what we get I like the I like stick into random and let's see what I can do with it when let me see what it is ah 7 32:37.93 sidekqpodcast Um, yeah. 32:42.34 sidekqpodcast 7 ah, okay, another response provided by our previous guest Joshua Simons do an odd job in town. Do you think that fits with penance. 32:53.38 Seth Crenwelge Yeah I could yeah I think Pennance you know under dark resident. But certainly I think is more attuned to the outside world and perhaps a bit older than. 32:55.29 sidekqpodcast If she's a clairvoyant does She know something about this odd job. Maybe yeah. 33:12.52 Seth Crenwelge Her age gives to her or makes her seem because you can see into the future feel like that gives you some little bit of maturity. Maybe like you're experiencing the outside world. Um, you know you're still child. You don't have that sense of logic but you know you're a little bit maybe more mature than the average duck. 33:19.98 sidekqpodcast M. 33:32.45 Seth Crenwelge Um, maybe penance. Yes, you know? Ah yeah, maybe Penance needs some component for something or or perhaps some small. 33:32.62 sidekqpodcast Common phrase. You're more mature than the average duck put that on a t-shirt. 33:50.58 Seth Crenwelge Butterfly effect of retrieving an object will cause something else to happen that Penance has seen and needs to happen and so needs this thing to happen. She could even. 33:55.13 sidekqpodcast Mm. 34:00.27 sidekqpodcast She's been waiting for someone to come along to do the thing that she needs done in order for the next thing to go off like how she saw it in the vision or whatever. 34:09.84 Seth Crenwelge Um, yeah, yeah, and she. 34:12.53 sidekqpodcast Or that the Runes told her this was supposed to happen and she's like well how am I supposed to make that happen kind of a thing. 34:17.69 Seth Crenwelge She's a believer in destiny so she has to make the thing happen. Ah you know because it's kind of is what people who believe in destiny. Do they just make the things that they see happen. Um, sometimes. 34:20.21 sidekqpodcast M. 34:30.84 sidekqpodcast Okay, and so regardless of ah, whatever that's going to be Okay, so the Dm sets forward something some odd job in town and she needs you to do it? Okay, interesting. 34:40.67 Seth Crenwelge Yeah. 34:42.41 sidekqpodcast Ah, she going to be very upfront about why she needs the players to do it or is she just insistent that like they need to do this thing right. 34:47.49 Seth Crenwelge I Think she's like kind of Kooky seer you know like oh there's that old seer at the edge of the village who lives in the abandoned shack with the with the big hole in it in the ground that under dark or in the basement. 35:02.18 sidekqpodcast Mm. 35:06.44 Seth Crenwelge Go see her. She needs you know help and then it's just like through the door or maybe like through a slit in the wall or something. She's like yes, do this thing I don't know why I gave her like old hag voice but you know. 35:23.30 sidekqpodcast Sure. Okay, okay, all right? So she needs the players to do an odd job in the town in order to fulfill. You know what she's seen or what she's predicted. So what is going to be the reward for the players. 35:23.72 Seth Crenwelge Ah, she's eccentric. 35:40.25 sidekqpodcast Once they returned to her successfully reporting that hey we did the thing you asked us to do. 35:46.81 Seth Crenwelge Um, um, she'd probably be willing to you know that that hole in the astral plane I mean it's not like it's worth really very much to her. 35:59.53 sidekqpodcast I. 36:01.49 Seth Crenwelge If the players want to know where ah where a small hole in the astral plane is I think that would be you know doing odd job get some information or if they want a more physical reward I think it would think enticing them that there might be something in there that they could. 36:12.11 sidekqpodcast Um. 36:18.98 Seth Crenwelge Go and retrieve if they wanted to would be also another good little lead into another quest. Maybe. 36:25.86 sidekqpodcast Okay I was going to say ah you know imagining a child. Ah you know being a dad of a young child just imagining like oh I know where this thing is and it's like if you reach in there and you like you think hard enough of what you want, you can you'll feel it in your hand, you'll grab it and pull it out. 36:33.58 Seth Crenwelge Um, this weird saying and. 36:41.67 Seth Crenwelge Yeah. 36:43.66 sidekqpodcast Um, and so that'd be kind of cool of like oh if they actually look in there and do an Arcan check they realize oh it's a portal to the aspiral plane but a kid may only reason it as like this is like the wishing well or the wishing. Ah, you know the wishing stones or whatever and it's like you. 36:55.78 Seth Crenwelge Yeah, throw a coin at this wall and it disappears and then you can reach in and pull something better out or something. Yeah, some sort of childlike sort of fairytale logic to it. 37:07.20 sidekqpodcast Right? Exactly like yeah yeah, you just reach your hand in and you think really hard of like what you want and then you just pull it out Sometimes you get what you want Sometimes you get something better Sometimes you get something worse. 37:20.80 Seth Crenwelge Yeah I think I'd like doing that like subverting expectations like that where you you play with the words in the perception of an item or an object or something like the like a natural plane hole. Ah and you and you know. Make it sound different but really, it's not and I think it intrigues players more. It makes them want to go ooh. What's that I don't know what that is I've I've never heard about that You know, especially for people who've been playing for a long time who might recognize these things by normal descriptions. 37:43.85 sidekqpodcast Yeah, so. 37:52.13 sidekqpodcast Right? Although that would be super hilarious of like someone you know, low level like ah sure I'll think about like this high level weapon I've heard about and then suddenly they pull it out and they're like ah what do I do at this now. 38:01.71 Seth Crenwelge Um, ah it Yeah ah interesting. 38:07.78 sidekqpodcast Yeah, but then they have the high level adventurers coming to track them down being like hey you stole something from me I don't know how you did it but you stole something from me and. 38:15.97 Seth Crenwelge But you stole so that that is the sword of my father only one of them exist in all of the realm and somehow you have been adventuring around with it for months and I've I've heard tales. Yes. 38:28.65 sidekqpodcast I've heard tales I've heard tales of these impossible things happening. Yeah okay I like that idea of a kid just being like it's the wishing. It's the wishing. Well it's the wishing stones. Yeah, just reach in think of it. Okay. 38:38.76 Seth Crenwelge It's the wishing round. Yeah. 38:43.68 sidekqpodcast Ah, but then we have to consider the opposite. What's going to be the consequence of failure or refusing the call to do this odd job in town and. 38:53.76 Seth Crenwelge Ooh, um. 38:54.98 sidekqpodcast Is this going to trigger like some sort of thing for her you know because she's envisioned this great thing happening in her future and that's why she's punishing herself even though she's a kid and shouldn't be doing that. 39:10.53 Seth Crenwelge Um, yeah I think um, um, well because she's she's clairvoyant. Um, you could almost play her to like. 39:14.59 sidekqpodcast Or is that not the direction. You'd take it. Okay. 39:25.44 Seth Crenwelge Be a constant thorn in the side of the adventurers as they go along. Um I think it would be more like drawn out of a of a punishment whereas like maybe nothing happens right away. But maybe if you. 39:28.28 sidekqpodcast So. 39:39.32 sidekqpodcast M. 39:45.34 Seth Crenwelge Weeks from now when you're doing something else and you need to get something. It's just not there or you know or there's some some sort of note like hey do this job and you'll get this back? Um, sort of thing because she's clairvoyant So technically you could play with you could. 39:51.10 sidekqpodcast Mm. 40:05.90 Seth Crenwelge Give her like perfect prescience of the future or you could like make it not so good. But if you're going to make it like. 40:11.60 sidekqpodcast I was going to say I'm reminded of a character from Fallout New Vegas If you're familiar with that game. There was the little boy who lived he lived in ah under the underpass community on the the stretch of the highway and so he was a clairvoyant character. And basically if you talk to him or like you befriended him or did something um he would give you like hints about the plot of the game and stuff like that. So um, you know certainly could be a thing where ah you know, borrowing that sort of influence of like oh they fail they refuse her. Maybe she starts telling them about like all the awful things that are going to happen to them in the party or like you know hints about the big bad evil and you know all those big bad evil things actually do end up happening because they blew off this kid thinking like oh you're just you play with rocks and you're silly and we don't want to deal with you know. 40:51.00 Seth Crenwelge Yeah. And it's like. 41:04.95 sidekqpodcast Collecting the 10 chickens that escaped their pen in the town or whatever it was yeah. 41:07.47 Seth Crenwelge Yeah, when yeah, then the consequences like she reads them their futures and it's terrible and and births will rise again. Yeah, if you don't collect these 10 chickens. 41:12.79 sidekqpodcast The dark overlord will reign supreme. 41:24.17 sidekqpodcast He'll do it a lot sooner than he was supposed to. 41:25.27 Seth Crenwelge Yeah, yeah, the the the chicken lich he'll erupt out of his grave in ten days if you don't collect these 10 chickens be and never now that's. 41:37.60 sidekqpodcast You never know you never know all right? Do you feel like this pretty well cements the character or were you interested in exploring any of the optional questions. 41:52.72 Seth Crenwelge Um, let's see true. Um I think if they had an enemy. It would be ah that would be interesting. 42:07.00 sidekqpodcast Okay, do you want me to ask you that question is that the one or is there a couple of them. 42:09.50 Seth Crenwelge Um, yeah, yeah, you can go ahead with the the enemy. 42:19.65 sidekqpodcast Okay, so so how does penants interact with different groups of people whether they're friends or family enemies or rivals. Um, you know other people in the community etc is there nuance and how penance will interact with people. Or is she just very 1 note across the board. 42:40.16 Seth Crenwelge I Think with strangers. Ah, she's very she'll come across as kind of like very childlike but um, childlike but like aloof. 42:55.17 sidekqpodcast Okay, so. 42:57.19 Seth Crenwelge Ah, sort of not really like fully there. Um and then with like friends if if they do become friends I think she'd be willing to be a little bit more vulnerable about like why she is the way she is why she's so like Guilt-ridden and terrible. I Think she's the type to like talk to herself and like chide herself and be like now now you shouldn't have done that like all this like weird kind of idiosyncratic things whereas Maybe she's not talking to herself in the present but she's talking to herself in the future when she's doing something that she doesn't like. 43:32.73 sidekqpodcast Mm. 43:34.96 Seth Crenwelge Um, but she's speaking it in the present. Um, yeah, and then I think for like enemies if anybody makes enemies with her. Definitely think would be the type to to like allude to like a dooming future for them. Even if that might not necessarily be be true. 43:35.79 sidekqpodcast Interesting. Well. 43:54.37 Seth Crenwelge And try and give them some existential dread. Um, you know and make them freak out and give them more anxiety The worst kind of enemy inducing enemy yeah. 43:57.46 sidekqpodcast Ah. 44:04.80 sidekqpodcast Mm Yes, the worst kind the anxiety building inducing enemies. Yes, all right? Pretty good all right? Well now that we've had the opportunity to make. 44:14.73 Seth Crenwelge Um, yeah, yeah. 44:20.71 sidekqpodcast Ah, penance here in npc creation I think it's time we head into our next segment called the random encounter and then that's where I'll insert the ad break for that and and so you know here in the random encounter section. We like to do a little bit of a role play a little bit of a vignetteta scene. With the character that's been made on the podcast. So I think my cousin Seth will do a brilliant job in portraying ah penance the quag goth clairvoyant child but the question becomes who should I be in the scene am I going to be 1 of my adventurer characters. 44:45.40 Seth Crenwelge Um, how boy. 44:57.89 sidekqpodcast Or am I going to be you know someone from the community someone from the past someone from her future. Maybe she's talking to like a future version of herself or something like that I don't know what kind of scene are you interested in portraying and showing off penance in. 45:16.36 Seth Crenwelge Oo Um, let's see I think an interaction with like a and a person looking to. Get something out of it like an adventure like somebody looking for maybe a reading or something. Maybe they've heard of this crazy seer on the edge of town or something or maybe they're an adventure looking for a request. 45:41.93 sidekqpodcast Okay, all right? So a podcast adventurer characters. So we've got the list to go through so I'll name them all so we got Dunkland Duncan a recklessly brave adventurer for hire happy. Go lucky no task too small no feet too daring. Ah, we have Sonja the warrior woman who started as a barbarian multiclassed into a paladin who serves to redeem the undead we have Koak the lawful evil arcane trickster roguish dwarf. We've got Chris Lee the herbalist botanist woodef drood who multiclassed into a cleric that serves living memory. We have oion who's the astral elf allusionist wizard and then we've got a gappe who is the lilac colored ah tiflling sorelock. Ah, who started off as a wild magic sorcer with fay wild ah influence there and then now has become a arch fay warlock pact and I believe that should be all the characters that we have in the roster as it were um so you have those to choose from or if none of those sound good. You're more than welcome. Ah, to help us create a new one. 46:55.96 Seth Crenwelge Let's go with a gotpe that sounds like fun. 46:56.92 sidekqpodcast A Gape man a gape has just been on a hot streak hot hot streak as of late. 47:02.10 Seth Crenwelge I Think it's the name. It's got to be the name as soon as I heard the name of gapa I was like Wow that one's yeah. 47:09.66 sidekqpodcast Yep, it's the whole virtue name thing with the thling don't you know so perfect. Okay, um, all right would you like to set the scene or would you like for me to set the scene. 47:22.39 Seth Crenwelge Um, um, you have at it. 47:27.36 sidekqpodcast Okay, so where we last left our hero agape. Um, she was coming back from her whole series of adventures. Yeah, you know she'd squared off against the 5 sided fates the 5 aspects of fate. Um, and then she had returned to the mortal realm and met with this very strange kanoo whose name was a gargle noise and there's a whole Hatfields a Mccoy situation where she was stripped of her weapons and leathers and stuff and she had to go settle this feud and then after that she got back on the road. And she met this very strange dragonborn. Ah orgi dragrax and um, you know he followed her back to town and was being very Cagey and stuff like that and it turns out you know he had this whole vendetta against the Faye. Um, so that was kind of like a little bit of a hairraising situation. But no, but thankfully her her arch fay was able to kind of set the scene straight I don't know if that meant anything nefarious or bad happened to orgid Dr acts. But um. Maybe there's a conversation. Maybe he's pointing in a different direction or maybe he was removed from the board I don't know arch phase do what they will um but it's sometime after that adventure and again agape is working with this network to try and help this community. Ah. 48:50.25 sidekqpodcast This burgeoning steampunk magicky community make sense of their growing in the world with technology but also ah cooperating with nature and it's not long before prosperina her archfey patron comes to her and says. There's an interesting individual that we've learned about ah through our Intel that's kind of come in the area um has taken up and and you know, kind of in the more rundown part of town where a lot of this you know, still. Ah. Bias prejudice you know pollution you know some of the stuff that we've been really trying to fight with this majorracy and you know all these industrial types with kind of just ah, plowing over. Um, there's someone from the underdark who's taken up residence there in an abandoned shack. Um. Very interesting, very curious sort of individuals. So I want you to go make contact and figure out what what's going on so a copy says right away boss and so she begins to approach this shack. Um, and so ah, she'll knock and be like ah ah hello. Hello is is there anyone in there. Hello. 50:00.40 Seth Crenwelge Hello Hello Yes, but yes now what you want. 50:09.56 sidekqpodcast Oh I'm I'm sorry. Are you busy? Do I need to come back later. 50:13.41 Seth Crenwelge Busy, Always busy all the time. No now is fine now. 50:23.62 sidekqpodcast Umm, yeah, a Gotpe's a little taken aback by the manner of speaking she'll try and do an insight check but we'll say that her insight check is inconclusive so she's just like maybe there's more people in there having a conversation or there's just I don't know she can't quite make. A read of the situation but she'll continue nonetheless and she'll say well I represent um interests that are trying to help the community and my boss ah was curious to meet you. And so I was sent to make the introductions. 51:03.13 Seth Crenwelge Boss A got it will hear the clattering of rocks briefly and shuffling with ah boss Um Prosperina Then. Interested in me. Um, um, for being here for your community I'm not welcome I will be that what you mean. 51:33.47 sidekqpodcast Oh interesting. Well you are clever aren't you Ah, she'll say through the door because she didn't reveal the name and so she somehow figured it out So she's like Okay, yeah, this is the reason why Prosperina wanted to talk to her. So um. Well, if it helps to speed things along my name's a gotpe and ah what what might I call you. 51:55.91 Seth Crenwelge I Call me and will call me penance and have called and shall always call myself penance. 52:07.60 sidekqpodcast Ah, Penance Lovely Yeah I think I knew a penance Once. Ah, good. Good good Lad. So um, yeah, So should she's sitting there kind of like doing the awkward thing of like where she's like. Ah, you know it might be better to have this conversation not necessarily through a door is there any way that ah you're going to open up and and we can talk face to face I you know I am a tealing I suppose I have to warn you but like I'm I'm Lilac colored and I'm I'm pretty nice and Cool. Um. Any chance of that happening. 52:46.90 Seth Crenwelge Um, some more rock clattering shuffling the sound of a latch being unlocked and the door creaks just a little bit and there's still like a hook across it like 1 of like the hotel doors. 53:01.28 sidekqpodcast So. 53:05.14 Seth Crenwelge Um, in these little um quagoth child peeks out with very bright, um, sort of almost Starlight-esque Eyes kind of peeking out from a dark interior. 53:25.63 Seth Crenwelge Doors open now. It has been. 53:25.96 sidekqpodcast Oh and she'll kneel down to like kind of be more on her level. She'll be like aren't you a darling little thing. 53:34.52 Seth Crenwelge Little now won't be won't be soon. You bright. 53:42.21 sidekqpodcast Well oh oh, do you need help with something is that what will get you to leave and make the introduction with a prosperina. 54:00.77 Seth Crenwelge Ah, ah I will need help. Ah I have needed help now. Yes, um, those those and she. Points out the door to behind a gape um a little firefly that is kind of puttering about in the in the air Those those. I hate them I Hate them Bright bright things all around my home outside and the windows and always will be in this. Unless they're not she looks into the eyes of a Gappe. You take them take them away. 55:01.77 sidekqpodcast So you don't like fireflies. Oh okay, so you just you just need me to get rid of the fireflies. Oh and it you want me to collect fireflies in a jar. 55:12.40 Seth Crenwelge In a jar. 55:18.50 Seth Crenwelge Yes, and then take you give them to you as a gift to Prosperina and you will. 55:24.14 sidekqpodcast And give them. 55:35.65 sidekqpodcast Oh I see give them as a gift to Prosperina. Okay, yeah I'm suppose it's been a while since maybe she's had some nice fireflies to hang out with sure. Okay, um, so you know you. 55:37.45 Seth Crenwelge Give them his gift. 55:52.53 sidekqpodcast Seeing that she's dealing with a child and this is a child's request. She's just like ah sure do you have a jar that you want me to use I don't know if I have one on my person right now. 56:03.19 Seth Crenwelge Ah, we'll have one she turns and leaves the doorway kind of hear the the small pitter patter of feet and some shuffling a small crack and breaking of something. 56:14.27 sidekqpodcast M. 56:19.94 sidekqpodcast M. 56:20.35 Seth Crenwelge Ah, glass breaking ah knew that would happen. Ah then some more shuffling comes back to the door and presents a crack to jar. Ah this. 56:32.34 sidekqpodcast Ah, okay I I guess I will make this one work. Um, she has to think in her memory if she has the mending can trip or anything like that I can't remember if sorcerers and warlocks know that one. But. 56:38.33 Seth Crenwelge Wilber. 56:52.27 sidekqpodcast Um, she might say oh maybe I'll have to have a buddy fix this one but um I'll I'll make it work. Okay, so just catch all the fireflies around here and then give them to prosperina. 57:02.45 Seth Crenwelge And then we will meet and my will be welcome. 57:07.11 sidekqpodcast All right? and so begins the legend of Zelda esque sort of running around this area trying to catch a bunch of fireflies in a broken jar and seen so there we go. What do you think getting to be penance. The little quagoth clairvoyants and. 57:28.80 Seth Crenwelge I'm not good with high pitched voices. So I just kind of went with a disgruntled middle aged woman which yeah, it works. 57:39.10 sidekqpodcast Sure, But maybe I'll have done some editing tricks and maybe I'll ah I will have pitched your voice higher or something like that time will what time will tell we'll see yes. 57:46.79 Seth Crenwelge Ah, time will only tell our little future penance I think perhaps this is a task that maybe doesn't have something of import to her future and she just doesn't like fireflies. 58:01.87 sidekqpodcast Ah, okay, sure. Yeah, she's used to like glowing funguses and like low mellow lights and the the occasional burst of the the flo phosphororescence from a firefly I guess must be disturbing somehow. 58:01.87 Seth Crenwelge Being from the underdark. 58:07.82 Seth Crenwelge Not yeah. 58:16.75 Seth Crenwelge Perhaps she likes the dark more. 58:21.96 sidekqpodcast Okay, cool. Ah, you know their ancestry or something like that I suddenly can get an idea in my head of like ok this is who this character is this is what their life is about this is what their stories about. And this is how they're different or maybe slightly subvert expectations or something like that and so then it just helps to make the world that much more richer. 01:00:03.70 Seth Crenwelge Yeah, yeah I agree I think it helps you with improv to being able to pick things up on the spot which is a useful skill. Yeah. 01:00:11.93 sidekqpodcast Yep, totally have invented characters on the spot which might have and on paper not had any reason or sense being made. But regardless they were and now they're beloved by you know more than just me. 01:00:28.20 Seth Crenwelge And now you have to keep them.
