But before him, we bring in Will Crockett to the volunteer club and will first home game coming up this weekend. 00:00:28:15 - 00:00:45:17 Unknown The season is finally here. Fall camp is finally over, thank goodness. And we can turn to Real Football and Neyland Stadium, like everybody else in the southeast. But primarily Tennessee will start out with the ball season. Ball club is going to have a big presence here on campus so they can be ready to go. We have some new things planned for everybody. 00:00:45:19 - 00:01:03:11 Unknown Always want to make it bigger and better. The app has obviously been something we talked about last week with Hunter. it is a big deal. and, you know, it's a one stop shop. I mean, you can find all the videos, we do have all quest you can find Eric Cain logged on Vols. You can find, you know, Josh Pate and what he does. 00:01:03:11 - 00:01:19:19 Unknown I mean, you can find a little bit of everything, along with Vol Club Confidential every episode. right here for season three, or look back in season two or season one. Yes. I mean, the big thing with the app is we want to gauge our members within all Tennessee fans on a daily basis. So it's a way for them to come and see what's going on with the ball. 00:01:19:19 - 00:01:36:06 Unknown So all the contents after we get a big win on Saturday, you're you're searching for content. You want to, you know, kind of keep all of that off from the game. So we have a way for them to come see you, to come see things without taking to the country, what we're doing behind the scenes with players and coaches for them to come and just continue their golf fandom. 00:01:36:08 - 00:01:53:01 Unknown And then the best part of that is they get the reward for everything that they do. So we have daily games in there. thanks for watching the content, doing different stuff that you did with points you can convert into the merchandise that we're wearing, that we have here so that Get Me Points is valuable, confidential, worth. 00:01:53:02 - 00:02:17:13 Unknown It should be worth a million for you. We can always make that happen. I don't know if that's one and 100 bidders on the show is worth $0.50 or points. But we love Hunter. He's not here this week, but they'll be back here soon. As for Knoxville, smiles are great sponsors. Doctor Malone, Doctor Cost and everybody over there. 00:02:17:16 - 00:02:19:00 Unknown Here's more on them. 00:02:19:00 - 00:02:39:15 Unknown Knoxville smiled, depending on us to make her smile better. Knoxville smiles. Are you happy with your smile today? Knoxville smiles were all about smiles. Hey, lads, what makes you smile? Pancake looks. I, I thought. 00:02:39:15 - 00:02:52:19 Unknown Some go to supper. How are you doing? Good. How is it? Doing great. 00:02:52:19 - 00:03:00:01 Unknown Cushing as you get here to to Rocky top. Kind of a whirlwind right there, you know, you know, in the month of February. What was that like? 00:03:00:01 - 00:03:20:18 Unknown You know, when you first got, you know, the the interest from Tennessee to kind of take me through those initial phone calls. I was on my way to Ohio, high school coach clinic, with all I. So I was driving the car, and the first call I get was Kelsey Pope. That's all I was. Job. And I said yes. 00:03:21:00 - 00:03:44:04 Unknown And then, he told me that he would be reaching out to, And then I got a text message from head coach Mike Carolina. That coach. Right then reached out to, want to do some background information. So that's what I kind of knew. so the first initial phone call was that night around 8:00. All day. 00:03:44:05 - 00:04:05:17 Unknown And then, we talked and then he told me to be back in touch with me the next day, which is on Friday, and get a call about Friday via lunchtime. and told me they wanted me to get you Saturday morning at 9 a.m.. I left the clinic, went back to my office and made sure my stuff was right, and then it was all I remember when we talked for the on the phone for the first time. 00:04:05:17 - 00:04:25:22 Unknown Like you didn't want to put the cart before the horse, right? You're like, I don't even wanna think about it. I'm not even looked at the room. I don't know what they have. You were making the decision based off of Tennessee. The trajectory, the the the tradition. Not of, you know, kind of who Tennessee had in the room just based off, you know, you were just because you didn't want to get too far ahead of the ahead of yourself. 00:04:26:00 - 00:04:58:01 Unknown Why like, why not let yourself? Why not let your mind go there? I think it's just the way I kind of always take the rest of the time, let things come to you to focus on doing the best is you can do the job. and at that moment, it was it was. I feel like I did everything that we need to put myself in a position to have a shot at the job, and it worked out in my favor, which I was, which I was like, but I've been in this situation before to, to where I kind of started envision myself and put myself in the rules. 00:04:58:01 - 00:05:16:21 Unknown And it didn't happen. so like this one, I had a peace of mind of some of the year, and I there was going to work out a way that was already written, and I made that answer leads into my next my next kind of observation slash question. You are a part of a group text with a bunch of running backs, coaches and it's like a faith based text. 00:05:16:21 - 00:05:34:05 Unknown It's inspirational stuff is quoting scripture and stuff. Every morning. And you're on this text with some guys that were up for this job, like to kind of take me through that because, I mean, I know you guys are buddies and you're sitting there, you know, just, you know, kind of spitballing ideas, you know, you know, each and everybody's room. 00:05:34:07 - 00:05:52:16 Unknown But all of a sudden now you're, you know, you know, who kind of your competition is for this job. So like, how is that you remain friends but probably like, hope he doesn't get over it. Gets to me. You know what? It never came about? Because we always thought we just, That's the thing about it, you know, we always try to help each other out in every way that we can, no matter who we're going after. 00:05:52:16 - 00:06:05:02 Unknown The same job players. I don't know if, you know, at the end of the day, yeah, we're competitive, you know, exciting times. But we got to be a lot better. That's what a whole brotherhood. 00:06:05:04 - 00:06:14:03 Unknown Who started it. And then kind of take me through what it means to you. Because I know you're you're you're a man of faith. So I mean, some. 00:06:14:05 - 00:06:33:16 Unknown He just he put in the group a lot of guys that he had a lot of trust in, a lot of guys. and it means a lot because at the same time, like, we always got each other. So that jump start my morning, that it's not only him playing things that I may be, I may jump start the morning or another coach may go sophomore. 00:06:33:18 - 00:06:50:18 Unknown You know, we all in each other because there's certain times we need that. You know, you got those dark days that you go through the kind of you got to go through your morning look at a message. You know, you guys kind of you have similar kind of, you know, starting in the small and, and kind of working your way up. 00:06:50:18 - 00:07:09:10 Unknown I mean, you know, he was at Western Kentucky and, and, you know, in Oregon now at Ohio State, you know, you kind of went, you know, the directional Carolinas, I mean, you know, Western Carolina, East Carolina, you need South Carolina someday, which is where you're from. I know, I know, I'm joking, I'm joking, I know I'm joking. 00:07:09:13 - 00:07:37:05 Unknown But, like, you know, then you're at Louisville and Cincinnati. What is it about the, you know, your journey that you know you appreciate? Because, I mean, I feel like, you know, whether it be a Carson Newman, which we'll talk a little bit a few minutes, but I mean, just you've kind of just gradually climbed. I think that's the biggest deal, you know, being able to work my way up and being able to learn how to coach, you know, from the time 2000 and now I've always had my own world. 00:07:37:07 - 00:07:54:10 Unknown I've always had my own, so I got a chance to learn how to coach. I got a chance to learn how to develop a process. okay. This is what I want to teach philosophy to me. This is what I want my teaching position and be around some really good coaches. So, you know, I was blessed to coach on defense when I first opened up. 00:07:54:11 - 00:08:11:01 Unknown but then being able to transition to go coach signing, my first job out of college and then, you know, being back at home and running backs spot the rest of my career is a little bit easier. But I think doing it the way that I did it, I didn't, you know, I think I took the proper steps in terms of, okay, I gotta work my way up. 00:08:11:01 - 00:08:40:10 Unknown I started again, I used to, follow five and you get a lot of cliches, and you meet a ton of people along the way. Teams that are really, really good people. what coach position did you coach on defense? You never tell an and I got this better than you. by the way, coach, change if you ever see the man's got the biggest hands. 00:08:40:12 - 00:08:56:00 Unknown Those things I remember shaking hands with Arnold Palmer one time, and he had big mitts, and you just, like, kind of engulfed your hand. And just the same way I at those things. And he never. He gets up there and he's very talky with his hands when he meets the media. And I'm like, good Lord, those things are huge. 00:08:56:02 - 00:09:20:11 Unknown what is it that you enjoy most about? You know, you know, coaching in general, the relationships, number one, that you develop, those are relationships. And that's where I realized I had to tell my players, get married, over the last two years have been getting those texts and those calls. Coaches like about 2000. And I said, you need to practice getting out of that. 00:09:20:13 - 00:09:34:16 Unknown and just, you know, being there, like every job that I've had has been in that situation because there are certain things that young men go through that. 00:09:34:17 - 00:09:57:17 Unknown how to deal with, you know, worry and stress at times and, and being able to see them develop and they might grow from year to year that that's kind of like one you see a guy come in as a freshman and you get off to graduating senior, junior, all the dream goals and aspirations that you talk about. 00:09:57:19 - 00:10:12:02 Unknown When you were a player, I'm sure you had coaches that pushed you and maybe you were like in the time like, this coach drives me nuts. And then like as you get older, you understand what he was trying to do. And so then when you see him when you're older, it's more of a like, oh man, I love to see coach. 00:10:12:02 - 00:10:26:14 Unknown Right. Have you become that guy now for for these older players, have you become that guy where you're like, I'm not saying like you're hard to play for because I don't think that's the case at all. But like that guy where you like where you're like, oh, coach. And you see their face light up because they've not seen you in a while. 00:10:26:16 - 00:10:44:03 Unknown Yeah, I'm kind of still I haven't reached that age limit yet. Yeah. You're not old coach like daddy, coach. And I'm still like a brother. so yeah, when they see me that we have a really good time and, you know, we enjoy each other's company. You know, it's a lot of guys. And we still got a taste of each other. 00:10:44:03 - 00:10:50:11 Unknown Love. You know, love. But I got this. my phone exploded. 00:10:50:12 - 00:11:09:03 Unknown About. I knew that time period was coming in, and I've always had, like, Andy Hibbert play for me. Yep. Andy Hibbert from the time he was a coach, at some point I. You got to be coaching at Tennessee. I don't know when it's going to happen, but it's going to happen. So Andy cut our sport. Listen to resistance a long time ago. 00:11:09:05 - 00:11:29:10 Unknown he's one of the ones I stay in contact with him. And so it's been a blessing. And he's very prevalent. The back at his alma mater. It gives. Got another kid on the way? I believe so, so I mean, like, you know, he's big out there in Corydon. what did you what did you learn about East Tennessee when you were at Carson Newman? 00:11:29:12 - 00:11:54:15 Unknown number one, we win game day hit on Saturday. Everybody kind of rockets off in, like, New York State. Even, like you could just feel it on Saturday. you know, I was gonna say it like, you know what was expected every week, week in and week out and and even coaching at the smaller level, it was like, man, I didn't even have an opportunity. 00:11:54:16 - 00:12:17:15 Unknown Sure. From Western Carolina, we played here the 2015 evolving situation. So we're like you understand the difference if you understand what it means when you walk into the stadium, like it's going to be a, and it was how to be able to shoot is all. So nothing like being over here. Lot. I was here like high school football was literally getting sick. 00:12:17:17 - 00:12:35:21 Unknown and being able to go out and, in this day, this was beneficial to me. and I think the biggest deal is like, you know what you are had to do a lot, but it was more about how to holistically develop a plan. I think that was another idea. Like everybody looks at coach sports all the way in discovery. 00:12:35:23 - 00:13:06:06 Unknown but like holistically, how we develop the players, how you develop these coaches, was something that I took. Personally about Jefferson City is what what what what what comes to mind when I say Jefferson City? When you say Jefferson, the first thing I think about, the second thing that I think about is the McDonald's that sits right there on the corner, before you get to campus, because every day, I didn't make it money. 00:13:06:08 - 00:13:24:19 Unknown So my life was to, I mean, you chicken for all that last meeting. Are you telling me you didn't go to pals? Is this real? At that point, I want to have enough money to, So, no, I didn't, go to that point and. But I was living every day if we can make money. And that's the reason why I don't drink sweet tea today. 00:13:24:19 - 00:13:56:07 Unknown Because I was drinking for 32 hours myself. Oh, sweet things. You're from, you know, over in South Carolina, the beacon Drive in. what was your go to play with, sweet team? I don't know, so my dad used to take me and my brother there. And and, we would end up at the beach. When I was younger. 00:13:56:07 - 00:14:05:20 Unknown I couldn't finish the whole thing, but by the time I got the job, the whole place was my. 00:14:05:21 - 00:14:24:19 Unknown That was kind of like those fond memories in the church in Spartanburg. so it was a lot of fun. I can't go to. Doesn't agree with the stomach. 00:14:24:21 - 00:14:33:07 Unknown So you never take the kids there? Yeah. They go. You you have to take them. They make you play. 00:14:33:09 - 00:14:57:16 Unknown You're a lot closer. And you been close at different points in your career, at different stops. But you're a lot closer to family now. How much? How nice is that? That is huge. not just for me. It was really huge for my wife because now she can go and be an ambassador. You know, we get married in 2018 and you, Amy, at the time. 00:14:57:16 - 00:15:21:06 Unknown And you know, that's the furthest she's ever been. You know, she was six hours, almost seven hours away. So when we leave in 2019. And then in 2021, we will go to live six and a half away. And we got two years for her being able to get home. She also like she can get up in the morning and she's at home by noon. 00:15:21:06 - 00:15:30:05 Unknown And you know, I can get up there. My mom can get up in the grass is now in the last three months and they have an. 00:15:30:07 - 00:15:34:23 Unknown All messed up. 00:15:35:01 - 00:15:56:08 Unknown How much you enjoying the dad aspect right now? Because you make your kids are to an age where they're becoming fun, you know? Yeah. It's good. It's, I think the biggest deal is that you see yourself and then you realize everything. I put my parents. Yeah, I'm into that. Amen to. That is good. And and I think the biggest thing is, like, my kids, my joy. 00:15:56:09 - 00:16:17:02 Unknown Like, they always talk about people. So they love being able to come to the facility, like, you know, seeing and being an experience. This is where they been. Some has been a huge we have the season upon us right here. Do they do they realize what's about to happen as far as like I mean, like just what the stadium is going to look like, what game day is going to look like. 00:16:17:04 - 00:16:45:20 Unknown So this will be the first time I've been in the stadium. And it is wild. And seeing the old day that they'll be really excited for the little this one. She'll be a little bit taken back this something I mean they what I find really helpful in those instances is pulling up YouTube. Like anytime you're doing something like, you know, even if you're taking your kids to, you know, Disney World, you know, showing them what it looks like, you know, and YouTube allows them to kind of feel it, you know what I mean? 00:16:45:20 - 00:17:13:22 Unknown Like, I just think that that that kind of lets them know what to expect a little bit. You can't you can't replicate the environment, but you can show what it's going to, to look like. Who's been your biggest influence? My college coach Matt, my classes. He saw me when I was a player and knew I was going to be a coach and had a plan kind of laid out for how you want to go about. 00:17:14:00 - 00:17:31:23 Unknown So he's real honest with you. Mike Clowney, he's going to be, you know, spiritual advisor. He was a guy that grew up in my hometown. You know, it was All-American. 00:17:32:01 - 00:17:55:18 Unknown In high school, he kind of model the way, you know, guys come from you use up a lot of the college. And, you know, he plays my college football game. You know, jump into the coaching game and my job. So those two and then my high school coach Billy Jack Moore, who I still talk to these days at that point in time, I still, you know, you got a love hate relationship. 00:17:55:20 - 00:18:23:21 Unknown And I tell my players and I said, you still doing some of the drills that. He's been on that you know he's very he's going to fall and fall. And I got to be prepared for our conversation. So we're going to talk and talk about but every single place I went and coach, you always going to. So that's something that's a lot a lot to me is there's something that I hope that I can, you know, fall into my place and. 00:18:23:23 - 00:18:52:09 Unknown Who's the person you hear most from Coach Moore? And, coach. Wow. So I told the coach Mike, probably twice a week, you know, at night. Talking his. Injustices. And then, Coach Moore, I hear from him or his daughter at least once a month. So. And they coach Bryce, and he's a high school coach in Jordan. And so we get a chance to catch up in time where he might. 00:18:52:11 - 00:19:12:05 Unknown I'll make you smile at me. We see how my kids have happy. And then being able to go out and have fun watching him do, and then seeing my players be successful as to seeing them go out here and the first time that they do something they might not be able to the way it is ready to be. 00:19:12:07 - 00:19:22:21 Unknown And you see that reaction on my face and a smile that I go back and I say that. Now, more from our friends at Knoxville. Smiles. 00:19:22:21 - 00:19:44:08 Unknown I'm Tennessee basketball player J.P. Estrella. Let me give you a tour here of the offices at Knoxville Smiles. Doctor Costa is placing implants with a robot, and it's all done digitally. There's no guessing with this since it's all robotic. Doctor Wilco is the newest addition to The Office. He loves to research the latest and greatest in technology. So the other doctors go to him for the newest product information and techniques. 00:19:44:10 - 00:20:02:13 Unknown Doctor Malone is building teeth in the mouth. To him, cosmetic bonding is more like artwork. He does this without cutting your teeth down. It's all about building them up. Guys, we started from the other bigger chair. 00:20:02:13 - 00:20:11:15 Unknown Each week, we will take a question from the volunteer club app. So if you get those questions in this week we'll ask Coach Sims. The question comes from Aiden 00:20:11:15 - 00:20:15:04 Unknown Swain. what you. 00:20:15:04 - 00:20:19:09 Unknown Guys, we got a lot of really good things going on. Like one is the one. 00:20:19:11 - 00:20:28:02 Unknown Two is being that we go on the river one, two, which I don't do a lot, because I can't swim with. 00:20:28:04 - 00:20:48:12 Unknown Two is, being able to go to college, and enjoy being able to eat. And I love fried fish on the counter. That little definition we have. So it's a lot of what you say is and that's really nice. I say that's simply not true. Drill the you can't swim because you kind of got thrown in the deep end when you got here, and you learn to swim. 00:20:48:17 - 00:21:05:05 Unknown It may not be water swimming, but you were swimming when you got here. I mean, you, I mean, I think any coach that enters into the mix in February, I mean, like you're kind of it's from a recruiting sample. You're like mid-cycle. Tennessee already had one committed. I know we can't talk names very had one committed for this cycle. 00:21:05:07 - 00:21:26:14 Unknown And then you're trying to fill out the rest right. Whereas like the 26 class you're going to have a full year building. Kind of like Coach Ablin. You know, he kind of had that was where you were a year ago. And then in year two, you know, as you know, benefited greatly from a year long relationships, you know, is that kind of how you feel like this thing's going from a recruiting standpoint? 00:21:26:16 - 00:21:33:17 Unknown I think, yes. You know, recruiting always is changing, you know. 00:21:33:19 - 00:22:04:14 Unknown I think, you know, a lot of times I get hired like you kind of, you know, you create this in relationships and kind of roles. And then you get is you catch up and see how bad, you know, you see, I think recruiting from now on is kind of what we want to do. The same of. What's one thing that you learned about Coach High Ball since you came on staff is these know I mean it is. 00:22:04:16 - 00:22:30:14 Unknown So that's the they you kind of get that sense of you know what I'm saying. And watching the games, I had the opportunity to compete against him. and they were in Central Florida already. So you can see the competitive nature there. so that portion of it and then understanding that he's really the person he wants the best for everybody in the organization, he's going to push everybody organization, to achieve those those are. 00:22:30:16 - 00:22:49:21 Unknown Are they? What sticks out to me is like, all coaches have egos when it comes to calling plays, right? Like you feel like you can develop as well as anybody. He feels like he can call an offensive play as well as anybody. But once you take off the field, that guy has no ego at all. Like he's the most approachable head coach from anybody in the area that I've ever seen. 00:22:50:01 - 00:23:02:06 Unknown Like you just, just just a regular guy. And you're kind of the same way. Yeah. Bit. Of. 00:23:02:08 - 00:23:09:06 Unknown What is it you like, most about your route, man? How to make. 00:23:09:08 - 00:23:26:05 Unknown That's the thing. I like every single player. Knows what they want to see. You know, they have a, you know, they don't want to, man. You know, the next guy. 00:23:26:07 - 00:23:48:09 Unknown That there is no selfishness in their role. You know, there's no ego. And they will continue to push each other. And that's what the young guys all the way to fashioned isn't really going to tell you. What do you think the perception of the Tennessee running back room is right now? I know you play don't care, but what do you what would what do you think it is? 00:23:48:11 - 00:24:08:21 Unknown You know, yours is. And you know, you got one older guy who's played a lot. You got some guys that really see that, which is good. You know, you like being on the ball. Everybody loves it. The backup quarterback. Right. Everybody loves the young freshman. Well your group is going to have that chance to play a lot of those young guys inexperienced guys. 00:24:08:23 - 00:24:29:09 Unknown So you you got to make sure we get him right. Do you like the versatility in your room. Because like I think every running backs kind of different. Like Samson's different than Bishop Bishop's different than cam. Cam's different than Peyton Lewis like you don't have like, a cookie cutter room. And and I think that's really good because now you get so that you're not going out of the game, you got one pitcher. 00:24:29:11 - 00:24:47:00 Unknown Now you got different curveballs and different changes that you can play on, which is good, because now they've got some like, you know, they may be getting sliced up in one bad job, and the next thing you know, you got a power run combination. And they say, you know, you got a combination of both.
