Austin Price: Hello everybody and welcome in for another episode of Vol Club Confidential. I'm your host, Austin Price, Tennessee Big win 20 to 13 over Texas a and m. It was a defensive struggle. The offense not much to be desired out of that one, but Tennessee will look to improve this week when they travel to Alabama. They're on the road the next two weeks at Alabama this week and at Kentucky next week. Let's bring in ball clubs. Brandon Spurlock and Brandon Tailgate this week in Tuscaloosa is bound to be pretty good as a lot of Tennessee fans head down. Looking for the first win in Alabama since 2003. Has it been Brandon Spurlock: That long? Yeah, we're five and one this year and we're undefeated in tailgate, so we're going to keep that street going in Alabama. We'll be in lot A is the plan, so we'll have a good setup there and we're kind of putting the bat signal out to anybody that's going to be there reaching out to people. So if we haven't got to you yet, feel free to reach out to us and we'd love to connect with you there in Tuscaloosa and then it's on to Kentucky after that. Right? So a couple games on the road. Austin Price: That's right. Two games on the road, this game with Kentucky next week at the tailgate one, you're going to do keenly. You go do a little racing Brandon Spurlock: Friday, racing keenly. They've got their fall, but Austin Price: You're also taking a self-made beer barrel to the bluegrass. Brandon Spurlock: Yeah, we would commandeered a barrel and we painted it into the beer barrel trophy, so it's here in the office here. We're going to have that with us, so we're going to have our own little celebration Austin Price: With that Brandon Spurlock: Thing as needed. Austin Price: Trotting it around Lexington. If Tennessee's able to get a win up there next week, it's Brandon Spurlock: Heavier than I thought. Austin Price: That thing is super heavy. Best thing going on about N I L right now is what for you guys? Brandon Spurlock: I think just the support, the continued support. I mean, I just checked right before we got on here, we're just short of 4,000 members I think last time we checked on this show in particular. It's a top three show in Knoxville in terms of sports shows, sports talk shows or whatever you define this as, and I don't think anybody really knows that. So our people are following us. Our people are paying attention. N i l has become, it's still about N I L, but it's about other things too. It's about fan experience, it's about a community, and we're seeing ways where this thing can, whatever n I l does, the ball club has become something that can exist well into that and beyond that. So that's pretty exciting Austin Price: To be Brandon Spurlock: Part of. That was not the case a year ago and even two Austin Price: Years ago. All right, we'll see you down in Tuscaloosa this weekend. Now let's bring in tonight's guest, big offensive tackles, John Campbell. John Campbell: How are you? Good. So when you met with the Austin Price: Media John Campbell: Earlier Austin Price: This year, you told the story about Tennessee wasn't really on your radar when you went in the transfer portal, but you quickly kind of found out that there a place you had interest in. I guess what was it that sold you on Knoxville to want to come up here and play? John Campbell: Really just the environment. The fans obviously like Joe and other players on the team, just wanting to just get in with those guys. But just the fans, it's crazy. They talk about Rocky to and how they seen the song, but really spiriting it. It's crazy for, yeah. Austin Price: So I've been wanting to have you out. I've been wanting to have Omar Norman lot out, but I wanted to wait until y'all played some games in kneeling to be able to talk about your experience. What's that been like? Last two when you had the blackout, then you had checker kneeling just coming from Miami. Not the poo on them, but at the same time I'm sure it's just a bit of a different atmosphere. Yeah, John Campbell: No, it's a crazy difference. Like Miami, we didn't really have no fans. They got all those big things down there, events and stuff. Here it's straight football. So just going in those games like the blackout or the checker, it was crazy, especially the checker, just seeing all them different colors and squares out there. But nah, it was just crazy experience being out there and just hearing the fans, they get real loud for real. Yo, Austin Price: When you get out there for warmups, is that when you first look around and go, man, this thing's going to look really neat Then when you run through the T, everybody's filled in at that John Campbell: Point? Everybody there? Yeah, everybody there. Yeah. Usually when warmup, they ain't really in the stands yet, so you ain't really worry about it. But when it's time to come out there for real going through that tee, it'd be packed. It just look crazy. The band they just opened up and you saw all that. Yeah, crazy experience for me. Yeah, for sure. Austin Price: So obviously when you're on offense they've got the quiet police because hypes won't everybody just kind of be able to hear anything but on when you're over on the bench and you're not talking to L r B about adjustments and you're able to watch the defense play a little bit, are you ever amazed at how loud it gets in there? John Campbell: Oh yeah. No, it get real loud third down, yeah, I expect them to do they one 11 and just go crazy for us. The fans just be loud. So third down, we expect them to be loud. We need them to be loud for us to juice our defensive. So yeah, no, that's a good thing. All fans. Austin Price: What have you learned from Coach Glenn Ellerby? John Campbell: What do you mean by that? Austin Price: Well, I mean as you've continued to develop since you've been here as a player, what's he taught you? John Campbell: I mean, coach Ee, I get my hats off to him. He just taught me a whole bunch of stuff. Just defense is just really just making a player smarter. I feel like anybody he could coach, he could just make them better in the day. Just letting them know something that they probably didn't learn. But ee, he a great great coach. He's like a real wizard. He skiing stuff up, he got that thing down packed. So it's just great to have a coach like that. Austin Price: John's been a character when he is met with the media. I mean he's been big smiles talking about Waffle House John Campbell: And Austin Price: Just having fun. Talking to Cooper Mays earlier this week and Cooper said, he goes, I love John Campbell because John Campbell is the same guy every day. What you see is what you get. He does not change. He is got the same energy, infectious smile all the time. Where's that come from? John Campbell: I don't know, just playing football. I mean you doing something you love, you should be happy. I mean I feel like it's better to smile and frown. You feel better when you smile. So Austin Price: I John Campbell: Don't know, just being out here with the guys is fun. I just be having fun. All my friends, it is just great, just me and new people and stuff, but I was way familiar new coop before I came out here, so it's just great having Coop. He a great player and a great addition to the O line. He keep that thing together. Austin Price: You guys have had so much success the last two games since he's been back 2 38 against South Carolina on the ground 2 37 against Texas a and m and as a Texas a and m team, those number one against the run. Why have you all been able to have the success running the ball when everybody knows you really want to run it? John Campbell: Yeah, I mean we just come out every day to practice and just put in the work. We just try to do what our coaches scheme us up to do and just what they coach. We just harp on those things and we just try to fix the mistakes that we made. So we just really just trying to get better and just improve. So that's our big thing, just trying to just get better and just increase our abilities and just get better. That's the main thing for everybody. It is just getting better throughout the season. We just can't, can't keep playing the same every week. We getting different opponent, different looks and we not going to get played the same. So we always just got to improve our game. Austin Price: I come back to spring practice and watching you go through spring practice and then you show up for fall camp, you look like two different guys. Body-wise you look like you lost. I mean you may not have lost any weight but it looked like you just transformed your body and you looked like you were ready to go, ready to hit this uptempo stuff in stride. What did the strength staff do to you to make you look transformed from spring to fall camp? John Campbell: I mean they just helped me out just coming in, helping me just get in shape, just getting used to the ways they do things there. I mean Coach Smith, the guys, they just got a great plan for everybody. Really great plan if you a receiver, they got a specific workout receiver going to do offensive lineman, D line, specific workout they going to do. So I mean just the way they got set up in there, it's just great and I just pulling a lot of extra work, a lot of late nights, two a day, just myself just getting up early at night. 2:00 AM just going back to the gym, putting in work. So it just payoff. Austin Price: What does John Campbell do well and where does John Campbell still need to improve? John Campbell: I feel like I just need to improve everything in my game. I feel like I do everything well, but I want to be i'll just chasing perfection. I mean the thing that's what we all trying to do chase perfection. I know that's a hard thing to say, but that's basically what we doing. We playing a sport. I mean we not really playing to mess up. We trying to Austin Price: Go John Campbell: Out there and make the perfect play or that perfect one play touchdown. It's not going to happen every time, but that's what we chasing, so we're just chasing perfection. Austin Price: You mentioned Joe earlier, you've known him for a while. John Campbell: Yeah. Austin Price: How important was that relationship? Just an understanding like okay, I know I can trust him. I've known him for a long time. John Campbell: Yeah, I don't got no worry with Joe. I knew him for so long. I know how Joe operate. He know I operate, so Joe, look at me, I look at him, he know what I mean. If I don't even got to say nothing. So we already locked in. Yeah, so it's just great having somebody you knew for a long time on that team. So chemistry already built, it's just only going to get better from that Austin Price: For you I guess. What are you hoping to, I mean the ultimate team goal is obviously to win a championship, but from an individual standpoint, what do you want to get done the next six games on the offensive line? John Campbell: Well, for the O line, we trying to win a Joe Moore award. We want to be the best offensive line that's says a great award just to show us fire working together and then I mean individual awards, probably the Outland trophy best lineman or something in that sort. But we just focus on just trying to get wins. I mean the individual goals and stuff that'll come if you just win and support the team. So I mean I'm just going to just stay focused. Just take a week after week and everything has just fall in place. You just got to have faith. Austin Price: When you were at Miami, you majored in criminal justice. John Campbell: Yeah. Austin Price: Kind of take me through that. What are you wanting to do John Campbell: After Austin Price: Football's over? John Campbell: Really? I was doing sports administration at the start, but it was too boring for me. I needed something to really work my mind and sports man, I don't know, it just wasn't really working. I had a hard class one teacher, I just kept getting a C in that class. I needed a B and I just kept getting a C plus high C and I was like, man, I don't know. But then criminology it is just something just to really intrigue my mind. Just learning how criminals think and what's they tactics and stuff. So that's something, I mean something that I like to look at and learn. I watch a lot of criminal minds and stuff on my mom, so I don't know, that's probably what got me into it. Austin Price: Is that something I guess I'm interested just you see how you are with the team, you see how you are with the media and stuff and then you have this deeper look into this type of thing. I guess is it just simply watching something with your mom or is it just something like I'd like to be a part of that trying to help and John Campbell: I don't know. I mean it just kept me active and it just kept me paying attention in class. Just really, I don't know the teacher, the way he explained I had a great teacher. He was just explaining how the criminals, their tactics and stuff. So I don't know, just learning about how people think and stuff. I don't know. That just intrigued me. I just really wanted to learn about it. Austin Price: It's going to be a modern day Sergeant Hightower right here. I mean he's going to be chasing people down at six foot five. Best part of Knoxville that you've kind of experienced besides the football stuff from the town perspective, from the people perspective, what have you enjoyed most? John Campbell: Well, all the people. They real nice here. It is different from Florida. It is just different culture. I don't know, it's just different everybody. So nice Florida, you probably see somebody, it's just put their head up, keep walking hair down here. They want to have a conversation with you, talk to you know, how you doing, where you're from. So it was just a big difference. I wasn't expecting everybody to be so nice and start knowing I was new and stuff, so people was going to try to bring me in, but now they really trying to bring me in. I'm one they on and stuff, so that's just really great. Just coming out here and just being wanted and stuff. Yeah. Austin Price: What's the family felt like when they've come up here and seen you in your element up here? What are they John Campbell: Thinking? They said it was crazy. The fireworks my mama was talking about. Oh, we all ran out of tea. The fireworks went on. She got scared. She didn't know what was going on. I was looking at the fireworks too. I didn't even know we had fireworks then, but no, it was crazy just running out that tee. I'm just looking up the fireworks on one off. It was piss black blackout. That's a crazy experience. My people, yeah, they like it for sure. Yeah. Austin Price: You like the black jerseys most? That seems like to be the predominant John Campbell: I put on the black jersey every week. Black Jersey mentality. I don't know. I feel like when we put the black jerseys on, yeah, I put a black jerseys on every week. For real. I like the black jerseys. Austin Price: So when you're trying to work on your craft, who are you watching? What offensive lineman, whether it's guys that played in the past or guys that currently play, who do you like to watch and learn techniques from? That type of stuff. John Campbell: I watch Trent Williams. I always train with him over the off season, the summers and stuff. When we all from football here, Austin Price: We John Campbell: Go out of Houston and train. I had brought the whole O line out off season probably before fall camp. Tighten up our skills, go out there, teach us some stuff. He had like an Oline summit, couple N F L guys, other college guys and couple little high school five-star recruits and stuff. So it was good summit, but I watched Trent Williams. That's like go-to, yeah. Austin Price: What's the wisdom that when you talk to some of these guys that have played in the league or whatever, what's the best advice they give you? John Campbell: I mean, trust yourself. Just don't think too much about it. Just go out there and do your job. Just do your job and just go hard at it. Don't hesitate, just go. Don't even think too much. I mean stay in the film room, take care of your body, really. Just all pro tips. Same thing. Coaches really preach to us. N F L guys, they preach the same thing. Just taking care of your body, doing your job, taking notes, just being respectful to everybody in the building. You know what I'm saying? Just stuff like that. They preach the same stuff like N F L. Same way pretty much. Austin Price: You tore your A C L a couple of years ago. Yeah. How hard of a time was that just because you're around football a little bit, but you're not right? I mean it's just different. John Campbell: No, that was hard. It was a hard, you went from everybody in your corner to everybody gone. You know what I'm saying? You couldn't play no more, so nobody hitting you up, nobody trying to come to the game or whatever. You only got your people that was really in your corner. So that was a real tough time. Me and the A C L, I just felt like it made me stronger, made me smarter. I went through football. I had to do the signals when I was out. So that just made me know the offensive scheme better and stuff. Really had to signal learn everything really. So that was just great really on that side. So I mean it was a gift and a curse I guess. I say tear my A c L like you out, but I mean it just made me better and I'm in this position here, so I just feel like everything happened for a reason. You just got to have faith, you just got to push through. That's it really. My mom always preached to me just have faith, push through everything going to be straight, everything. God has your plan. So I just feel like you just stay humble and you'll be all right. Austin Price: We Macallan castles out a few weeks ago and clearly if he could have been here the whole time he wishes he could have been. Is that kind of how you feel now? Having spent about nine or 10 months here? John Campbell: Yeah, no. Yeah, that would be great. I've been here. Yeah, that would be too lit for real. Yeah, it was nice. Austin Price: You were able to hang out with Darnell some and talk to him? Oh John Campbell: Yeah. Austin Price: I guess what kind of advice has he given you sliding in here to? Not really. I mean it's kind of his spot, right? John Campbell: I mean he gave me great advice. I mean he watched my film and stuff. I sold him clips and practice, ask him how he does certain things because in they scheme they do stuff differently. I was new and I just tried to just get all the info I could get coming in and just trying to earn a job and stuff coming in. But he watched me. He was like, man, you straight just go play. So really told me that he Austin Price: Gave you some confidence. John Campbell: Yeah, it just gave you confidence. Just go do your job. I mean, but yeah, darn is a great dude, great guy. And he doing his job right now in Chicago. He doing great. Austin Price: Who you hanging out with most on the team? John Campbell: I hang out with everybody kind of. I hang out with everybody for real, but I be with Omar, Norma lot. Dante. Austin Price: The transfers? John Campbell: Yeah, the transfers our group. So we hang out every day, hang out with Joe. I hang out with everybody, defensive players, TMAC, Tyler, everybody west, everybody really, we all kind of hang out together all the time. Yeah, we tight. Austin Price: Cooper was talking about earlier this week when we met with the media, we knew the defensive line was really good and we knew that that was going to help our group. You get out there on the edge, I'm sure you've had some one-on-one battles with James Pierce and he's having a fantastic year so far. What's he like to try to block? John Campbell: I mean, yeah, it's tough to block. He real fast. So basically I already knew James was real good. I told him, I said, man, boy, you better do what you're supposed to do this season. He doing it. Yeah, because I already seen him. He was good and stuff, but yeah, no, James great play. He fast. He messed up with a lot of tackles with that speed and all his twitch. He great. He really got it all. So yeah, I just can't wait to keep watching him play every weekend. So yeah, we get each other better for sure. Austin Price: What's something most people don't know about John Campbell? I John Campbell: Played the drums in high school. Well, I played a lot of instruments. I played the snare drum, a drum line when they had that Austin Price: Thing John Campbell: On there. I played that. I played the drum set. I know how to play the xylophone. It's like mallets. I played the trombone. Austin Price: Where's this musical side come from? John Campbell: I don't know. I just got rhythm. I don't know. I just always had it though. I did middle school, I did band also. Yeah, jazz band. Yes. I don't know. I'm like the jack of all trades. Austin Price: What's one thing that you're interested in then that is your just go-to, you know what I mean? If you're not doing schoolwork or playing ball, you're doing this extracurricular John Campbell: Traveling, Austin Price: Where do you like to go? Yeah, John Campbell: I like to travel. Best place I went. I like Cabo. That's a good place to go. Austin Price: Yeah, I went there on my honeymoon. Nice. Yeah, John Campbell: Cabo. Yeah, it's nice, nice place. Puerto Rico, I like the islands. I like the water and stuff. Austin Price: Probably John Campbell: Won't go nowhere. Super cold or something. Like Colorado Aspen, something. Austin Price: He's destined. He's destined to get drafted by the buffalo Bills now. Chill John Campbell: Out. Chill out. Yeah, but we do like the bills. We like every team in the N F L. All teams. We love y'all. But yeah, I like tropical weather. Just go and see tropical water or something. Yeah, that's what I like to do. I like to travel. Austin Price: If you were planning your family's vacation, is it simply going to the islands? John Campbell: I'm planning the family. How many people going? Austin Price: Everybody. Well, you're immediate family not extended. John Campbell: Who paying Austin Price: You are with the big N F L check you'll get here in the next year or two? Oh, John Campbell: I mean, yeah, we could plan a trip. Family. Well, I don't know. My daddy, he's scared to fly so he, Austin Price: Mine is too. Mine's ever flown. John Campbell: He going to have to meet us somewhere. He going to have to drive book a couple of flights. I don't know. Probably go to Marco Island or something that's in Florida. Some chill. It's not too far. Like my pop could drive or Key West, something chill. You know the family, they just want to kick up on the beach or something. Probably not go too far. My mama, she don't want to go out the country. She thinks she's not going to come back. We don't know. We'll probably just stay in Florida and go to the beach or something. Chill out. Austin Price: If you're going by yourself somewhere in the world that you've never been that you really want to go to, where are you going? John Campbell: I'm going Columbia or the Dr. Columbia. Dr. Probably Belize or something. Yeah, Austin Price: To South America. John Campbell: Yeah, some fat Brazil. Yeah, I like Brazil. I want to probably go there too. Austin Price: You'll get to go to Columbia here in a few weeks. Just Columbia, Missouri. It's not the same favorite place to eat in Knoxville is what? John Campbell: Favorite Waffle House. Austin Price: See I teed him up, teed him up, put the ball in the tee. He gets the home run Waffle House. He needs the N I L deal. Let's get that done at John Campbell: Me. For real. They see me out there. I don't know why they don't like me. Austin Price: What's your go-to there? I mean John Campbell: Is Austin Price: It the same thing every time or do you vary it up? I John Campbell: Switch it up, but I always get the all-star because the All-star come with everything. You get the waffle, the grits, the meat with it, whatever meat you want, sausage or whatever. And the eggs. I like cheese eggs, so I get the cheese, eggs, cheese, grits. I get a regular waffle or I could change a waffle to biscuits and gravy and then I'll probably get bacon, a sausage or something. Boom. And then I get a Texas or I get a steak or I could get a breakfast bowl. I could switch it up. It's an Allstar, but it's going to be something else. Austin Price: Every time. An Allstar with something else. John Campbell: Yeah. So the Allstar, Austin Price: Do we roll with orange juice, chocolate milk? What we drink? Just water. John Campbell: Probably like water. Like lemonade. Austin Price: Lemonade? Yeah, I John Campbell: Like lemonade. Austin Price: That's your jam, huh? John Campbell: Yeah. Sweet. Like lemonade. Lemonade. Austin Price: You like raspberry lemonade or just lemonade? John Campbell: Regular lemonade, probably strawberry, pink lemonade, something Austin Price: Pink lemonade. I used to love the pink lemonade. They'd serve you in church growing up. That was always the best, biggest influence on you as a person is who? Your mom and dad. Who? Yeah. John Campbell: My mama. Yeah, fa mom for sure. She showed me how to work hard. Don't never ask nobody for nothing. You get it yourself. Just go put in the work, put your head down and you'll be all right. Yeah, she put that mentality in me. Just stay humble and everything will be good. Just keep faith in. God. Stay paired up. That's what my mom preaching me, so I just keep that going. Austin Price: You feel like that you just meshed well here. I mean you kind of stepped in the door. I felt like you almost assumed a leadership role right out of the jump. Like you handle yourself a certain way. Do you feel the same way? John Campbell: Yeah, well, I mean I wasn't really trying to be no leader, just come in, new guy, come in, try to tell people what to do. I wasn't really trying to be on that because I know everybody mess up. Ain't nobody perfect and you telling somebody what to do and I come in spring workouts. Oh, you need to lift this weight. Oh, I ain't trying to come in and be doing that. I was just trying to come in and work hard, show everybody I'm going to come in. I'm going to grind, I'm going to get dirty. I'm going to work. I'm going to put the work in and I ain't going to say nothing and I'm going to just support anybody who need help or whatever. But I mean I just want to show the team. I'm going to work. If you know what you're going to get out of me, I'm going to bring it every day. I'm going to bring it every day and I'm going to put hard work in and I'm going to be a great teammate. That's why I really just try to show for everybody. Austin Price: When you're between the white lines, are you a talker? Are you quiet? John Campbell: I mean I can go throughout the whole game and not say nothing. If nobody don't say nothing to me, I ain't going to say nothing. But if someone say something to me, then yeah, I ain't going to yell. I'm going to say something. It is up. It is on. Then Austin Price: If they engage, you engage. John Campbell: Yeah, but I ain't going to just go out there and try to bother nobody. I'm just go out there, I'm going to do my job, I'm going to do what I need to do for sure. But I know it ain't no friends out there or whatever. But I ain't Finn just be going out there talking for nothing. I'm focused. I'm doing my job. That's what I came out to do. I came out to do my job. I came out to make a play, but I'm not finna come out there and just be talking crazy to nobody when somebody talk crazy to me. Yeah, no, I'm going to say something back. Don't mic me up. But yeah, for sure. But yeah, Austin Price: More excited when the play call comes in. If it's a run play or a pass play, John Campbell: Oh I don't know. I'm 50 50. I just, whatever it's called, we linemen, whatever they call we block. That's what we do. We're going to run block or we're going to pass block. Whatever we need us to do, we do it. You know what I'm saying? That's the mentality We here to serve. We the O line, we got to serve, we got to protect. We got to make sure the quarterback get the ball up or we got to make sure we open that hole for the running back. So that's our job. That's what we got to do. Austin Price: You got these games coming up next couple of weeks. You're on the road at Alabama this week at Kentucky next week and then back home before a four game stretch in November. You like road games or home games better? John Campbell: I mean it don't matter to me. I mean home games. I was at Miami, so I mean that felt like we didn't really have no fans. Sometimes they fans was lot of our fans when we was at Miami, so it felt like we was on the road. But I mean it don't really matter to me. Road home. I just want play. I just love the game. So I just wanted to get out there. Austin Price: The bigger the game, the more amped up you get as far as you want to play in Alabama, you want to play in Georgia versus playing Yukon. I John Campbell: Don't know. I feel like every game a big game. You can't take no opponent lightly. That's how you see all these big teams probably fall to another team because you take 'em lightly. You got to go out there and treat every game like it's a championship or whatever mentality you think of. But you just make sure you on point every game don't come out that sidestepping or whatever. You better bring your mentality. Austin Price: When you guys are hanging out, whether it's Omar or Dante or Joe or whoever, what do you guys like doing? Is, is it a plays or a PlayStation or Xbox thing? Is it just listening to music? What's hanging out involved? John Campbell: Well, probably listening to music in the studio or playing the game. Really just relaxing. We'd be out on that field all day. We would come home, eat and just chill. So we'd be at the house all day relaxing and stuff. Or get in the studio, Omar them, they got a studio with us so they be rapping and stuff. They got it going on. But I mean anything really, but just mainly relaxed though for sure. Like we in the house. If you're going to catch me, you going to catch me in the house somewhere for sure. Austin Price: Ball walk or running through the tee? John Campbell: I don't know because the ball walk, you get to get fresh on 'em too. Running through the tee. I mean you still fresh though? I'm still fresh with my suit on. I, I don't know. I'm going to just say a bowl. Austin Price: Chocolate or vanilla? John Campbell: Vanilla Austin Price: Fruit or candy? John Campbell: Candy. Austin Price: What kind of candy John Campbell: Trolley, gummy worms. Sweet sour, gummy worms. Gummy nerds. Them nerd gummies. Austin Price: So you like gummies? John Campbell: Yeah, I like something sweet like candy and stuff. Yeah, Austin Price: I would ask you bee your mountains, but we've already established you like the beach. But John Campbell: I do like the mountains though. I went to Gatlinburg last weekend and I went a couple weekends before. I like Gatlinburg though. It is a new thing for me. I ain't really never been out there in the mountains. I saw a bell out there. I was like, oh lord. Yeah, yeah. But nah, it's nice though. I went at v n and stuff. No, it's fine. Nice views and stuff. You get away from the city. I'm a city boy. I'm used to city life, fast life, but going out there it is just different. Calm, peaceful, you just hear nature, whatever. So it's just great just being in that too. So I like both. So yeah, Austin Price: That time of the week for the annual question, LeBron or mj? John Campbell: What you mean? LeBron or mj? Austin Price: Who's the goat? John Campbell: The goat. Yeah. I know they know. They know that goat really was like mj, but really LeBron. I say LeBron taking over because he really leading everything kind of. He really starting to lead in every category. So there's no really other way to say he not the goat or I'll say he the king. King James. But I say Jordan Gold, he the king. I don't know. Austin Price: There you go. See we've had a lot of Jordans, we've had a lot of LeBrons. We had a few Kobes and then we had last week, coach Carner said Dr. J really showing his age. Oh, John Campbell: Dr. J? Yeah, Irving. He nice too. Now Irving. But I say Jordan goat, LeBron the king. You just got to keep it like that because Jordan really started it. They tried Kobe took out the Jordan, all them. They watched Jordan, he started it. So he ready to go and then they just, you feel me, got the blueprint and did they thing. So LeBron King, Austin Price: You're a Florida kid? John Campbell: Yeah. Austin Price: Favorite N F L team? John Campbell: I mean any team in Florida and the N F L team in Florida. Austin Price: Okay. Favorite major league baseball team. John Campbell: Any team in Florida? I ride any teams. I ride for the teams in Florida that's winning like N F L or something. Not like say I'm competing against a team right now, but I'm riding for the Florida team. N F L M L B, hockey, all that. We riding with Florida. Florida Panthers, everybody. Austin Price: If you weren't playing football, what would you be doing? John Campbell: Traveling somewhere? I'd probably be like a vlogger or something. Showing my life, daily life. I don't know. Did Austin Price: You just say vlogger? John Campbell: Probably not really like blogger. I don't know. It'd be something I'll be showing people something like the life I live. I don't know. Austin Price: This guy's got to a YouTube channel. He's going to be showing us. John Campbell: I'll be doing something like Austin Price: The best things to do and Cabo with John Campbell. John Campbell: Yeah, something. Yeah. And I'll be showing the lit life. Yeah, really If I want football, I just be showing the day in the life. It's crazy just what I do. Austin Price: What coach at UT has had the biggest impact on you? Not named Glenn Ellerby. John Campbell: So not ee, not Austin Price: Erbe. You got to choose somebody else. John Campbell: Oh, hype Coach. Hype. I mean it's a lot of coaches really, but Hype Coach Elby. Yeah, hype for sure. Coach. What Austin Price: Do you like about John Campbell: Hype? He cool. He got a swag too. He'll play as coach. He know he done played the game and he have did it at a high level. So that really give players respect. Okay. Because you know coach saying, oh you need to do this. Oh you need to do that. But he's saying he done did it. He done been out there. He done did them practices. He was run up Heisman, he done did his thing. So he got the respect level of really coaching and all the players really wanted to just play for him. He did it. So I don't know, it's just different playing with somebody who really did it, who played or then playing with somebody who didn't play and just talking mess to you all day. It is just different feeling as a player. I don't know, it's just a player. It just feel different. I don't know how to explain it. Austin Price: How excited are you for this weekend? John Campbell: I'm excited. We just got to go in and do our thing. Just go and work hard. Just go out throughout the week, do our same preparation, what we do and we just got to just do our thing. Just be confident and go out there and just play hard. Play hard up. Austin Price: Have you learned anything about the third Saturday in October and how big this game is? This Tennessee game? I John Campbell: Don't know nothing about the Traditions. And the third, somebody told me about some third Saturday today. I was like, what y'all talking about? And all the songs. I got to learn the songs, the Austin Price: Cigars John Campbell: In the game? Yeah. Austin Price: If you win you get to smoke a cigar. John Campbell: Oh, okay. Yeah. So Miami, Florida State Win Smoke Cigar. Okay. Yeah, but all the Tennessee songs wouldn't be singing in the game. I don't be knowing nothing. I just be standing there. I need to get my lyrics up. For real. Austin Price: You're so music oriented. I can't believe you don't know these songs. So you don't know Rocky Top yet? I John Campbell: Know that Rocky Top. That Rocky Top. But besides the other ones, I don't really know. I got to get right. Austin Price: You don't sing Rocky Top Horse. John Campbell: You know you ain't getting no Rock Talk somewhere. Austin Price: I thought I would try. I mean you never know whether you man, you come out of left field. John Campbell: Yeah, might one day I might be singing Rock Talk, but I don't know. Austin Price: It'll get you up to direct the band over a big one. John Campbell: I'll go direct that band for real. Austin Price: When Saturday you direct the band? John Campbell: Yeah, I'd go up there. Austin Price: Best advice you would give Young John Campbell if you could talk to your younger self would be what? John Campbell: Don't let little stuff bother you. Like basically? Yeah, just don't let little things bother you. And really that's the main thing. I usually really just let stuff bother me and mess up my whole day or whatever. You just got to learn. Just be calm, be more serene. Just go out through the day. Just have faith and everything will be good. That's what I really learned, but telling my younger self that, yeah, wish I'd have really learned that way back then. I done heard it, but really actually wish I would've did it way back then. Austin Price: Well, he's been a big part of the left side of the offensive line. Left tackle John Campbell, we wish you luck the rest of the way and good luck this weekend at Alabama. Okay, John Campbell: Appreciate it.
