[00:00:58] So, first up we have an interesting story out of barn, stable, Massachusetts. I'm probably pronouncing that wrong. It appears that they had a problem with a large vault. They used to store ballots on election day morning. The story says that, uh, election day had to start later than normal. On Tuesday after the town clerk was unable to open the vault where the ballots were stored, the clerk had to notify the secretary of state elections division, that they were unable to access the ballots in order to send them to the polling places. [00:01:30] Polls were supposed to open at 7:00 AM, but weren't able to open until after 11, after the clerk printed out some emergency ballot. The Massachusetts security of state William Galvin had to obtain an order from the court, requiring the polls to stay open until midnight to make up for that lost time. In the morning, the article says that around 4:00 AM on Tuesday's officials went down to the town hall basement to open the vault and get the ballots out. [00:01:58] The vault has an old steel door with a combination Lock, but the registrar couldn't get the vault. Knew the code, but that wasn't the problem. They're not exactly sure what happened, but sometime between Saturday, the last time the door was open and Tuesday morning, the door broke. Evidently the handle shared off when they attempted to open it. [00:02:22] According to locksmith, when the handle was sheared off, the long core that went two to three inches into the door was pulled out and they said in some situations. They could attack a new handle onto the end, but since it broke off inside, that was not going to be the case. Locksmith tried several different approaches, each taking a lot of time and work in the end, he ended up using a drill scope and sledge hammer and, uh, a lot of work to get in the solution to the problem. [00:02:54] Evidently was drilling all the way through the door to access an interior handle that allows somebody who's stuck inside to get. Had to drill through the door a couple of times to slowly work that handle open far enough to get the vault door to open and was finally able to get in. But at which time it was too late for those specific ballots to be put into service, to get 'em out to the polling stations. [00:03:20] So employees were going to have to hand count all the ballots because the emergency ballots, they printed up were not gonna be able to be read by computer. The locksmith told the news that he did not think the vault had been tampered. That this was an issue of overuse over the last 60 years or so, and possibly an overzealous tug on the handle in the morning. [00:03:40] And this story is a good reminder that if you have a safe or vault that you rely on, probably be a good idea to call in a safe and vault tech every so often to just go through it and make sure everything is in good shape. And you're not gonna end up getting yourself locked out anytime. Next step. We had an interesting story sent in by a bunch of people. [00:04:04] Uh, the remains of a female vampire with a sickle on the neck and a padlock on the toe were excavated in Poland. Researchers uncovered the remains of an alleged female vampire in Poland with a sickle across her neck and a padlock on her toe to prevent the woman from rising from the dead, the skeleton, which was found wearing a silk cap had. [00:04:26] Protruding front tooth, which may have led to her being labeled a vampire. They say the sickle that she was found with was not laid flat, but placed on the neck in such a way that if she were to rise from the dead and try to get up, most likely the head would have been cut off or severely injured. [00:04:44] According to Smithsonian magazine in the 11th century, citizens of Europe reported fears of vampires and began treating their dead with anti vampire ritual. Believing that some people who died would claw their way out of the grave as blood sucking monsters that terrorized the living and by the 17th century, such burial practices became common across Poland in response to reported outbreak of vampires. [00:05:11] Other ways used to protect against the dead, rising from the grave included, cutting off the head legs or placing the deceased face down to bite into the. Burning them smashing them with the stone or hammering a metal rod through the skeleton. The pad Lock on the toe appears to be more symbolic than anything. [00:05:32] I'll have a couple different, uh, stories on this link in the show notes in case you wanna learn anymore. Unfortunately they don't show the padlock on the toe anywhere. So we don't know what the padlock that was used way back then actually looked like that was something that I was kind of hoping to. [00:05:50] Next up in the news. I don't have any specific details, but I am told that Lock picking patrolmen and se Lock and key are reporting that SLE has recently told locksmith. They are discontinuing their connect and sense smart locks in favor of the encode line. I'm not particularly familiar with any of those models. [00:06:08] I'm not a big fish ina of smart locks. So doesn't mean much to me, but if you are, or you are locksmith, that might mean something to. Over on Twitter flipper, zero put out a thread of tweets about problems they have run into with PayPal. They say PayPal has blocked our business account and is holding 1.3 million us dollars for more than two months without explaining what exactly they're not happy with. [00:06:35] Even PayPal support doesn't know what's going on. This endangers, the production of flipper zero in general. On June 7th, we launched sales on. Shop flipper, zero.one store. Customers had two payment options directly via card or through PayPal, more than half of customers chose PayPal. After a few days of sales, PayPal initiated the compliance process. [00:07:00] They asked for some documents and we immediately provided them. Then there were a few more requests, which we also submitted. And after we got this, your account is permanently block. They say, we've talked with at ask PayPal, but they can't say what exactly compliance team want from us right now. We need to pay for new production batches. [00:07:22] And this money is critical to our business. If there is anyone from our community who has direct contacts of PayPal, internal team, and somehow can influence the situation we kindly ask for help. And there was a, a reply linked to here. From Lock, picking lawyer who said, I feel for you, this happened to at covert instruments. [00:07:44] When we got started, PayPal sees a brand new business growing too fast and gets nervous because PayPal's on the hook. If it turns out to be fraudulent, it was at least six months before they stopped delaying payouts. But what's interesting about this is a couple of the, the screenshots that flipper zero shared said flat out. [00:08:06] They will no longer be getting service from PayPal and that they'll have to wait 180 days for the payment of their balance, which just seems absolutely ridiculous. After seeing this and hearing what Lock picking lawyer said there, I'm starting to think that if I were to ever come up with a product that I wanted to sell that had anything to do with InfoSec or security Lock sport, anything like. [00:08:36] There. I don't think I would be doing PayPal. I would find some other service cuz because I wouldn't doubt that the type of product being sold by both covert instruments and flipper zero might be part of PayPal's hangup there. It could be the quick large amount. It could also be as one commenter said that there are concerns that some of the money could be going into Russia. [00:09:04] It's hard to say since they won't answer questions, they don't have any good customer service. They have 1.3 million of this company's money and won't even give them any customer service. Won't explain anything. Nobody seems to know anything to me. That's just like highway robbery. We're gonna hold your money. [00:09:22] We're gonna collect interest on it while it's in our account and too bad for you. And moving on to videos, several people sent this in. Stupid law makes this illegal in Alberta. A lawyer explains this is a video by Runkel of the Bailey. And in this video, he explains why in Alberta, Canada law makes self repinning kits and probably other items sold at home Depot, possibly illegal and well, probably illegal by the definitions they have in the law. [00:09:54] I'll leave it to you to go over and watch his video to find out exactly why, but this would obviously. Cause problems for anybody in the Lock sport community, anybody owning anything to do with Lock picks or Lock disassembly tools could be in trouble if you live in the Alberta area. And next up is another video by, uh, donut media. [00:10:20] I covered them. I believe it was the last episode. This one they're testing car break in products, as they say, we tested car break in product. In the video, they try their hands at various tools, including Lei picks, uh, air wedge and slim gyms. Many of them obtain through CTED instruments. I skip through it. [00:10:40] They do show basically how to use the different, uh, products and how difficult some of them can be like the slim gym and how easy some of the others can be. So might be worth checking out, moving on to the products front. This one is a little D. So if you like gin or you just want a novelty product to add to your Lock sport collection, check out the safe house distilling company. [00:11:06] This is an article that was posted called ABQ distillery brings home four American craft spirit awards at the American craft spirit awards, safe house distilling company brought home several metals, including silver for its barrel age Lock, pick gin and bronze for its regular Lock pick. It's pretty cool. [00:11:27] Comes in a bottle. It's got a pad Lock on the label. Lock pick gin might be interesting for those of you who are into gin, or like I said, if you just want something different to put with your Lock collection. And I've mentioned this before, but it was brought up again on Twitter this week. There is a book that is due out. [00:11:51] Next year called Lock sport, a hackers guide to Lock, picking impressioning and safe cracking. It is by Joss weirs, Matt burrow, Walter S beanie a to Z and Nigel Tali. It's available for pre-order at Barnes and noble and no starch press. There was a coupon code or there was a discount available if you pre-ordered through Barnes and noble up until like a day. We had a couple of new ones shared, and I'm gonna list them in the order they appear in. [00:12:40] So the first new one comes first and actually the second. One that I'm listing is actually listed last because it is the last one on the timeline anyway, listed on meetup.com Canberra locksport meets every second, Sunday of the month in on bacons field street, Fishwick in Australia, and they say the camber Lock bar group is for anyone interested in Lock, picking physical security, the inner mechanics of Lock, et cetera, all skill levels. [00:14:36] I didn't see any, and nobody sent a new in. So we're just gonna move on over at speed Lock dot org. Panda-Frog has put up a post about some new updates here. We have new attempts on the Lock, a quarter contest for the Mako 4 25 and 4 27. He said, uh, speed net one took the lead with a new record time of 7.2, three, four seconds. [00:15:00] Shortly after pick Smith tried his best, but failed with the time of 7.474 out of the blue came prince and took the lead with the time of 6.03, three seconds. So some good competition going on over there. Then we have some new records set. So the multi Lock classic with rated pins by MC in 40.6 seconds. [00:15:25] PacLock 100 G by Matt. In 5.6, three, three seconds. And the Mako 4 27 by prince in 6.03, three for the Lock a quarter was also a record time. So a way to go print on that one. And then he also posted some new first records, which are basically records or times locks that don't have any record established yet. [00:15:52] And you got the Zeis icon, SK six. Extra code. We have one Lock picking criminal story this week, this one was entitled already convicted of 20 crimes and facing charges on 18 more Wacom man arrested again. According to Wacom county superior court documents. Deputies saw a vehicle parked on the wrong side of the road. [00:19:15] They checked the vehicle's license plate found it was registered to the suspect in a recent burglary deputies say that they spoke with the suspect and asked him to step outta the vehicle. And then he drove away at a high rate of speed running, a stop sign in the process. Deputies followed, attempting to get him to stop, but he refused to pull. [00:19:34] Deputies then lost sight of his vehicle, but eventually found it unoccupied. After using a canine, the suspect was located reportedly hiding under a deck. The suspect later allowed deputies to search his car and documents, state that they located a Lock pick set in the vehicle.
