Everybody, and welcome to the latest edition of the skewed and reviewed skewed cast. I am Gareth, creator of skewed and reviewed, and you can catch us at sknr.net as we cover all things movies, games, television, travel, pop culture, entertainment and more. You can go to Sci Fi Radio, Open Critic, all kinds of places like that, see our reviews. You can go to Pinal, PINALCentral.com, keyword skewed, which is a network of newspapers and you can see, years of our reviews archive there. Go to Facebook, B. J. Shea's Geek Nation. There's an archive of our radio segments and, of course, we have skewed and reviewed the magazine quarterly publication that ties in with a lot of what we do that is available. Barnes and Noble, Magster, Mag Cloud, various places like that. So, right now, it is Justin and I. Michael is, tied up with some stuff. We're hoping that he can get free, but part of it is that the recording software changed over, and so we had to, do a little bit of updates with that. We're getting used to that, and hopefully everything works out. So have a couple of products I wanted to talk about, that I've been doing some reviews on and I've been waiting for a chance to get to talk to them, talk to you about them. And then, of course, we have, the some really big breaking news today to talk about. First off, we're on the go a lot and we're always at conventions. We work, we teach classes sometimes, covering movie conventions, cruises, you know, movie premieres, and I don't know about you, growing up in, Arizona, didn't use it that much. When I went up to Seattle, I was one of the odd people that didn't eat, a lot of seafood and did not drink coffee. Well, as I've gotten older, that's definitely come in handy And if you're like me, when you go to hotels, you find the coffee in the hotel's kinda weak. And, found an interesting little solution, Oet. There's this product called the Outen, and what it is, it's a portable, espresso machine with three minutes of self heating, and it weighs, basically about, loaf of bread. You can take the machine with you anywhere you go, and it's got a, travel size shape to it, so it's tubular, and with just one tap you can start brewing your own, you know, coffee, with a bottle sized, unit at home or outdoors. Now, you know, the great thing is you don't have to pay for expensive coffee. You don't have to wait in long lines. You essentially, you know, put a pot into it, put the bottom of the cap in, hit the button, and boom, pour it from that, cap into it and off you go. The great thing about it is they can run, as little as a hundred and $49 and they basically won a design award. I've been, fiddling around with this for a while and it's really interesting. It comes with a capsule adapter. It comes with a coffee filter basket, a coffee cup, a ground coffee spoon, and Type C cable. So essentially you put coffee into your, setup, off you go, and done. And it is really, really interesting, stuff because if you want something a little stronger, and you don't want to have to deal with, like I said, watery coffee, that's always boggled my mind even when they give you, like, K Cups, Keurigs at a place, you get watery coffee. So this is a way that you can, have your favorite coffee, do some artisanal updates, and, go from there. So definitely check it out. Just go to 0utin.com and you'll be able to see that. Now, a couple of games are in the, early access stage they asked us to test out, and one of them is Subway Sim two. Now, I wanna say at the beginning, not usually a person for this type of game. I know they're phenomenally popular in Europe. This one even had a primarily German language, and I was having to do some, you know, easy fairly easy to understand, but I was having to do a little bit of refresher because I do know some. I don't, speak it that much. But, interesting off game, so I decided to go in, made my character, got my quick play going, got familiar with that. You know, here's the open the door quickly, close the door, cabin door, passenger door, all that lovely stuff. Got myself moving and then, made it to the first station, you know, throttle up, throttle down, brake, that sort of thing. And the real problem came for me when I tried to throttle up and go to the next station because I overshot my mark. And here I am sitting here about 40 feet from where the ideal disembark point is, could not for the life of me figure out how to back the train up, get, you know, things off. So after about five, ten minutes of that, I said, Okay, let me just put the thing in here, go on to the next station, and see how that works. Wasn't able to do it on the current mode, so basically I got stuck, tried to take some video from it. It didn't work beyond the initial screen. So, basically that is where we are with it. It is from AeroSoft. It is called Subway SIM two and it is available for PC. So, you know, there are there are some things at the time, that they had told me. Like, for example, statistics, achievements, credit, load game isn't working, photo modes, so on and so forth, save game are not working. They'll be released when it comes out on April 29. Well, I'm sitting here going, it's after April 29. Still had a little bit of a problem with it, but, what I did get to play was fun. I certainly enjoyed doing that. I just, you know, certain things for me, I like being really precise on these things are not always the most ideal thing for me. And it was kinda like, alright. You know, just tell the passengers to move the back of the train and they'll get out through the other door. Everyone will be happy. We'll move on. So, that is where we are with Subway SIM two. The other thing I wanted to talk about is rather interesting. There's a game I put in for an early, access key. I'm kinda hoping that we hear back from them, but this is one that was sent and it was kind of under the radar. And, Justin, I think you would absolutely get a kick out of this. This is one that I I sit there and I say, we gotta get the guys. If we were to get the whole, Left four Dead and Back four Blood team together, I think we could have some fun with this. It's called Dead Zone Rogue, and you have the option to play, solo or three player co op. So you wake up on a spaceship, it's a first person shooter, and you go level by level. You start off with a pistol, you have a grenade, and there's like robots, creatures, all this stuff, and you survive level by level. If you get taken out, you're out until your teammates clear the level and then you move on from there. And of course, as you go on, there's, hints that something dark and sinister was happening with colonists and so on and so forth. And each time you go through the level in Take Out Bad Guys, you get additional power up parts basically that you're allowed to use at various points, including at the end of levels to get better weapons. So you can go from, Oh, I don't want this pistol. I want a assault rifle, or I want a sniper weapon. I wanna upgrade my grenades. I wanna upgrade my armor. You have the option to do that as you go, forward, and it is a lot of fun. It was one of those that also I tried to capture video and it kept conking out on me. So there you have it. But, between that and Tempest Rising, which I'm really, really enjoying because, you know, it's not just a a loving nod to command and conquer red alert and all of that. It is just basically taking it to the next level. And then, of course, let's not forget next week, we have Doom the Dark Age coming out and all of that fun stuff. So a lot of stuff to definitely keep us busy. So, Justin, this week, I'm sitting there the other day just chilling out, minding my own business, and I get an email with some news that I'm just like abso freaking lutely about time. And I had been a fan of Event Horizon, the, horror film, horror sci fi movie, and I know it was a box office disappointment when it came out, and it was shocking and all this fun stuff. And they decided that, you know, hey, we heard pre COVID there was gonna be a TV series of Prime Video and we haven't heard a peep since and everything basically nada. Well, the other day, I get an email from a comic book company and they tell us that, IDW Dark, comic company is basically going to do a five comic series starting in April excuse me, in August that, this is very interesting. It is an expansion of the cult horror favorite, and it is written by Eisner Award winner Christian Ward, who did Batman City of Madness, Tristan Jones, who did Aliens Defiance, and rising star Pip Martin, who did That Texas Blood. It is essentially a five issue prequel talking about what happened with the original crew bef-, that was, hinted at and there were references to it, in the movie, but now they're gonna show us exactly what happened to them over five issues. So my question for you is, what do you make of this? What were your expectations? And do you think this might indicate a, renewed interest in the franchise so we can get that series or perhaps a new film going? No, it's definitely exciting. You know, I'm also a big fan of Event Horizon myself. Huge, you know, as far as sci fi horror goes, it's, it's, it's one of the just the most, I guess iconic at least, or or memorable, you know, kind of a cult classic, but, that's probably why we haven't gotten the sequel, or, like, a remake or reboot or anything. But I'm definitely looking forward to the comic. I think it's a good idea. I I I think that's definitely an interesting story to to explore there. You know, as far as what the future holds, I don't know if it necessarily means that, we're gonna get, like, you know, a new movie or anything, but it does show that there's activity. So there's there's people watching this franchise. There's there's some interest there, and you never know, you know. I I think comic is a great avenue, and, you know, we've talked before many times that, you know, there's kinda tiers a tiered system, and it's and certainly, it, you know, has nothing to do with the quality of the medium. I think there's plenty of graphic novels and comics that are absolutely awesome. But it certainly is, I think, cheaper, definitely cheaper to make a comic than a, you know, feature length, live action movie. You know, we we often talk where, you know, there's a lot of franchises we talk about where it's like, okay, you know, there hasn't been activity here in a while. Are we gonna get a new movie? Well, I could maybe do an animated movie. You know, animated movies are a little bit cheaper than live action and, you know, sometimes TV series TV series can be a little complicated on price, but certainly to, you know, when you go in the graphic novel comic territory, it's a little more affordable. But, you know, it's a way to revitalize some interest to kind of gauge, out there, you know, is there was there interest for this kind of thing? And Event Horizon is such a simple concept that, I think could definitely work again. It's it's you know, we'd also talk often about different franchises that, you know, maybe that's just a product of its time. You know, Event Horizon, I think, could absolutely work in the modern context. It's really, you know, distilled down into just deep space horror, and I think, that could absolutely work again. The tricky thing is a lot of horror movies tend to be on the a little bit on the lower budget side. And event the original event horizon, I think, also qualifies for that. I think it also was, you know, it wasn't a huge budget movie, but trying to pull off a, you know, a movie about, you know, a a derelict spacecraft that has basically gone back from hell. That can be maybe be a little, little expensive depending on how how you do it. But, it definitely is a franchise that has a lot of potential. I'm curious to see how, you know, how they execute this comic series. What I think is very interesting is that if you look at the press release and the two covers or the artwork that we have on the website, I'm not gonna read the whole thing, obviously, if you need to do that, but it basically says, that they will embrace the hard r writing of, the movie. And this series is called Event Horizon Dark Descent. And obviously, like I said, five issues. Now, obviously, I kind of wonder what kept it so long. Why did it take so long to do a follow-up? Because as I said, pre COVID, we started to hear stories about, you know, prime video. Jeff Bezos is apparently a big fan of science fiction. We heard that a series was in, the discussion phases or the planning phases, you know, and then nothing. And, of course, you know, we had COVID. We had the writers' strike. We had the actors' strike. Hadn't heard a thing. And the only real nuts and bolts of new stuff that we were getting that that, you know, for me, was Blade Runner 2099. And so there was a part of me saying, alright. Did, you know, Event Horizon kinda slip to the back burner because of the focus on 2099, which also, as we know, started production had to do this. I expect to see a lot of that at San Diego Comic Con. And then there was a part of me saying, okay, we've got Skydance, getting ready to, hopefully, you know, for them, take control of Paramount. Is this an example of them looking at it saying, you know what? It's been, from my understanding, doing well on streaming. The high definition Blu ray release did very well. You have all the people, you know, desperately hoping that the lost footage could somehow be reclaimed even though I'm told, you know, the only rumor that there's anything left because apparently the footage wasn't stored properly is there's a rumor that some producer has the unedited version that was gonna get an x rating, on a, VHS copy somewhere. But, you know, my attitude is if it existed, I think we would have seen it by now. But is this simply a case of the rights are where they are and somebody's looking at it saying, let's test the water and see how this is because this could be a cornerstone franchise. You may remember, goodness gracious, we're gonna go back on this one, Justin. Do you remember the first Doom remake, when Bethesda got the rights and they had that one where you could, you know, they made a big deal about easy level design. You could design your own multi play levels. Do you remember that? Are you talking about, like, right after Doom three or the Doom. Yeah. The right after Doom three, act if I remember correctly, Activision had it and then it went over to Bethesda and they basically kinda rebooted the whole thing and did that, you know, the the much more darker, violent one, and it had the level editor in it. And I, like, had always said, man, I want to make an Event Horizon level, but unfortunately, I'm one of those I can sit there, I can plan it, I can see it, I just don't have the skill set and the patience to do that. Because to me, I had this whole vision of that corridor, run through the ship, go down the corridor, and then fight in the magnetic containment room with the big spiked ball moving around and, you know, and you could add fire. And I'm like and then have it turn to zero gravity, and I just thought that is just the perfect pairing. And there you go. But that that's just me, you know, one of these days. Really excited to see what they do with that. That is for sure. Now, I did want to switch gears on that in probably the most, unique way possible that, this morning I got up and I had a news, story coming in. And I will be honest, the first thing I did was I looked at that and I said there's absolutely no way this is true. This is just some, you know, fan speculation show so on and so forth. And then all of a sudden, all the news outlets, the legitimate news outlets as it were, started doing this that, yes, indeed, during their quarterly or however it is, during their earnings report, Disney has announced they're building a brand new theme park and this is not an expansion to any, like the new land they're building in Florida. They're building a brand new resort in Abu Dhabi. And I just kind of looked at it, and I was like, okay. That's not expected. That was not one that I had on my bingo card. Now it's really interesting because as you may know, Abu Dhabi is an extremely wealthy, community. They have a lot of, traffic coming in and out of there. It's, you know, a very, what what is it here? It's one of the world's biggest airports. They're saying something like, a third of the world's population is within a four hour flight including 1.4 people in India. And, they're saying that it's actually shorter for them to fly to Abu Dhabi than it would be for them to go to Hong Kong or Shanghai. And as the business stuff is starting to come around, it was kinda like, okay. Now supposedly, it's gonna be very futuristic, very modern. It's gonna be on one of their, island areas, but here's where it's rather interesting. For as I understand it, there is this company called Morale, and they do a lot of resort building in and around the area. And the place is, of course, known for incredible architecture, incredible experiences because it's my, you know, obviously money's not necessarily an object there. As it was explained to me, essentially, Morale's gonna fund and build this thing. They just want Disney to oversee it, run it, and provide them the design. So essentially, if somebody said to me, think about this, they just took the Imagineers at Disney and said, you got a blank check, designs, design whatever you want. We'll pay for it and build it. What do you make of that news? Yeah. It's definitely fascinating. So and, to your to your point, I think, what's going on here maybe a little bit is, not necessarily that Disney is going in and, building this and footing the bill themselves. The first thing that came to my mind, you definitely hit the nail on the head. Abu Dhabi is definitely a huge tourist attraction, partly because of exactly what you mentioned. It is, they have sort of built that area to be as accessible, Well, certainly not accessible, money wise. You have to be very wealthy in order to go there. But in in terms of being, accessible, you know, by large amounts of people, it's definitely, it's definitely one of those places and, tons and tons of investment has gone in to different resorts and crazy, ambitious, build and fake islands and stuff like that. So it's definitely a a very interesting place. And, the first thing that came to my mind is that I'm I'm guessing that quite a bit of the funding is probably coming from other sources. It's May maybe coming from some of the authorities in Abu Dhabi itself or, like like you said, one of this other, organization that will largely be doing the building itself, which, you know, is definitely a good deal for Disney. And, you know, especially because of the amount of money it probably costs to these days to to create a new, a new footprint, you know, really anywhere. But certainly here in The United States, it's probably much more expensive than it used to be. But, you know, this is isn't, totally abnormal. I think there was some expansions, going on. I think Universal Studios, I think, has expanded overseas, recently. And, so it, doesn't shock me too much that this is a move that's being done. Yeah. Get get some of this stuff. So Meral, the company, apparently has already built SeaWorld, Yaz Island, Abu Dhabi, Yaz Waterworld, and Warner Brothers World, and it's located the island is that it's going to be on is a twenty minute drive away from Downtown Abu Dhabi, 50 Minute drive from Dubai. There's several existing theme parks, a golf course, a marina, waterway mall, and a 65 eateries on the island. And they're basically saying that they wanna make a statement with this. But this is what's interesting. CNN says it may prove difficult for them to turn a profit because it says the area has seen hits and misses due, due to theme park and leisure. You know, be very curious because I have not been there, but I did used to live in The Middle East for a while, and I can tell you it's warm there. It's very warm there. I don't know if Abu I don't think Abu Dhabi is as hot as Saudi Arabia, but nonetheless, it's warm. And, you know, you're hearing things like that this venture will be the most technologically advanced park that they've done, which will blend in with the city's futuristic aesthetic. They said everything is anchored with a park but they're gonna have a very fancy modern, castle doing this and it is going to be interesting because, you kind of sit there and you can all say, well, you know, who, who is the marketplace for it? And some people will say, oh, well, it's going to be, you know, the locals and then, of course, you're going to have the people that mention India, that mention all the four hour flights. Let's not forget there's a very large number of Disney fans who go to Shanghai, go to Hong Kong, go to Tokyo. A lot of people went to Tokyo around Star Wars celebration and have said, this thing's absolutely fantastic. I can't wait to go back. Now, yes, there's controversy. You're gonna have the people coming out and saying, well, what about human rights and what about this and that? And my thing is, you know, valid questions, but weren't these same questions asked when they expanded into China? And so, you know, there is a point where you have to say, let's just look at what's coming here. And I, I am very curious about this going, I, I can tell you right now, I, I, I would say, all right, probably a little more than I want to travel to right now. I have said I wouldn't mind seeing Euro Disney someday. I wouldn't mind going to Tokyo Disney, but I wouldn't mind seeing the Hong Kong and the Shanghai One. But I also say, you know, we've got a full enough schedule just go into the two parks in California. They're expanding those. We're constantly going to the cruise on their cruises. We go to their hotels. We go to the conventions because let's be honest, we're in Arizona. California is a much easier get for us to get to. Don't even go out to Florida. I have now been to Florida since I was a teenager. Now, definitely would love to go out to Disney World, see all the stuff, but again, a lot easier just to go out to California and do that. So it'll be interesting. I mean, it will be very interesting. I think there'll definitely be a lot of eyes on it. I think when they do the next d twenty three expo, which, won't be this year, but will be next year. I think there's going to be a lot of interesting stuff. Now I remember before Shanghai Disney opened, they had a massive display in the Anaheim Convention Center with all these interactive models. They had videos saying, This is what our version of Pirates of The Caribbean is going to look like. They brought cast members over from Shanghai, had them wearing the new park costumes right there to tell us, Hey, this is where our, you know, we don't have a Main Street USA, but this is the equivalent of this is where this is gonna be, this is where this is gonna be. And, you know, this is new. You don't have this at Disney parks. And I'm like, that was fascinating to me. And, you know, I'm always curious to see what the future will hold with that. So rather interesting stuff. And, moving on, just in this weekend is PAX East. As we record this, some of our crew has already started, making their way over there to get their, passes. They are going to be running into the park tomorrow and doing all of the, fun free stuff. Now, I'm sitting here going, Oh, you know, two ks Games is gonna be talking about Borderlands four. They're gonna have their new thing. Other games, I hear Killing Floor three is gonna be there. You know, we talked about Blizzard being there and then some people are saying, hold off a bit on that. Yes. They're gonna be there, but they're mainly doing panels. And then I'm like, yeah. But some of their PR people have asked if we're gonna have people there. I'm kind of wondering if maybe certain things like Borderlands four might be closed door media things, kind of like Nintendo did with the Switch two, that it's not for the public, but if you're the press, come on, set an appointment, come on behind this curtain and we'll show things off. What do you think we're gonna see? Do you think it'll be a step up from previous years, and what are you excited over? I my expectations, I I think, are a little low. I think we've talked before that PAX has kinda shifted back to its roots in recent years to be more of a fan, or yeah. Sorta like a fan event, get together, fan hobby event. You know, a lot of what PAX was originally supposed to be for is it and even the years that I went for PAX East a couple years, many, many years ago at this point. But, half of the the the floor was dedicated to, tabletop gaming tables, which I think kinda spoke to what the original intent was, was get people together, you know, with similar interests, a lot of it tabletop gaming. I think, the, I can't remember Mike and I can't remember both of their names, but, the the two founders of, Penny Arcade. That was a lot of their their interest was was with tabletop gaming, and I I think there was a huge focus on that. PAX sort of became you know, and I I've I've said this before in my speculation that, I think PAX for a while for, you know, its its peak of, like, you know, in the years that I went, it sort of became a a mini a really, really, really mini, e three. You know? And not to compare the two, but, basically, it was open to the public. There were multiple passes, so you could do it, in the, you know, East side of the country. The there's past west and West side of the country. There's south down in Texas, and then there was even Australia. So, you can kinda coordinate a public event where people could get hands on with video games that have been announced, many different places. And I I think that was a good marketing, tool during those years. So, the two years I went, one of one of them, Battlefield three was there. You know? And you think back, like, Battlefield three is a pretty big game. That's not a that's not an indie game that's not you know a, that's not any small game that was probably one of the biggest games that year and that was they had a live demo of it. The game had not come out yet so that's kind of a big deal, you know. Wolfenstein, The New Order was just, one of the two years I went. Borderlands, pre sequel was there. But I think over time it's, like, kinda more shifted into, you know, indies get get get some, attention out there. And certainly a gearbox, I think, has a love for packs just in general. So I think that, you know, you can always almost always bet on if there's an active gearbox project that, it it might get, it might show there. So I think Borderlands four, I think, is a pretty safe bet. Randy has a good relationship with with PAX and, Penny Arcade in general, I think. So, we'll probably see Borderlands four there, maybe some other indies. But I would not expect any big players there, or at least, like, you know, any of, like, the the huge names. Even with Blizzard, I, I'm I on the side of, it's probably gonna be something along the lines of a, of panels. And that was the last year I went. It was there were a lot of panels, like, and the the bigger, I would say, quote unquote, bigger names, that did show up, a lot of them were were there to basically kinda talk about some of the things they had worked on in the past, and open up to questions. But a lot there weren't many new big games being shown or, or revealed at at the few packs as I went to. So I wouldn't expect a huge show, but it should be a good fan event. There there might be some interesting, new tidbits on some projects that's been worked on in the past. And, you know, maybe, you know, with Borderlands four coming out, you know, later this year, I think there's a safe bet we might get some, maybe a gameplay demo of Borderlands four. So you may find this interesting. I went to their site just now, and they have featured things on the page, Alienware, and this is crazy. Bandai Namco, Elden Ring, Night Rain, at Booth 16055, Crimson Desert, Devolver's got Micropunk, Funcom is showing off doing awakening there, and it shows like some other companies and you're like, okay, you know, whatever. Pokemon is gonna be there, the retro wear, Samsung Galaxy, which I thought now that is an interesting one, Wizards of the Coast. So I'm like, alright. These are, you know, these are interesting. And then you get into kind of what we talked about. Lot of stuff, but they're they're like saying Atari's gonna be there showing a lot of stuff, including their upcoming turn based game, and you're like, alright. That sounds good. Dead by Daylight is gonna be there, showing off some stuff. So you're like, alright. Fine. You know, this is this is interesting. And, you know, I'm scrolling through the list and it's very interesting because while it is still mostly a lot of indie games, it's interesting that they are willing to put right on the page now. This is, you know, not for everybody, but some companies are flat out willing to say, yeah, this is what we've got. This is what we're bringing. Usually, that is only for the press and if they have a meeting. So it was very interesting to see, like, oh, here's Dread XP. They've always got a horror game, so I'm curious what they're gonna have. And, you know, you go through it, but of course, everybody's sitting there going, yeah, but two ks games is gonna be there and Blizzard's gonna be there and people are like, right, but they're supposedly only doing, as I said, they're doing panels and stuff, and it's great that they're there. But, you know, I think most people would say, we want to see them on the floor. We want to see, you know, we want well, forget just sing. We wanna come and we wanna play and we want, you know, to get in on the action. So, it'll be interesting. I I'm hoping that there is some stuff that will really light up things. You know, as you said, some years you're like, mostly a lot of Indies that didn't really I mean, we had that one year where I think the biggest thing was the biggest home world game, but then you had other years where you're like, okay, this wasn't really, something on my radar, but it is, something that people have embraced. And so, you know, why not go ahead and, why not go ahead and check this thing out, see what it's all about and get ready and play. So, I'm hoping I'm hoping that there's some really interesting things that are gonna come from this. We don't know, but, PNY is gonna be there. You know, it'll be interesting to see if they have anything to say about, their new cards and that sort of thing or even some of their storage devices. So fingers crossed for a good show, I guess, is the best thing. And hopefully, this is a sign of things to come and some of the bigger, companies may dip their toe. I mean, I know I we've gone over this and I'm kind of like, oh, dear. Do we have to have this debate again? I've had so many people say to me, why isn't Nintendo there? Why isn't Nintendo there? And my attitude is, well, basically, they feel they don't need to go to a trade show right now because based on the preorders, they're happy with where things are, but, you know, if they do decide to do something, it would probably be at PAX West, which is Seattle, which is just down the road from where, Redmond is. So, you know, there you have it. One more thing I wanted to share with you folks before we closed out. Just literally seconds ago, this came through to me And I apologize if I get the name wrong, which unfortunately I probably will. Director Takashi Yamazaki is apparently going to be doing the brand new Godzilla movie. Toho Entertainment Asia has announced that the Academy Award winning director, of, the, Godzilla minus one will direct, and do this, get this though, Justin, for a brand new Godzilla ride attraction.
