I've got Justin and Michael with me as always. So I want to hit the ground with the big event that is happening this weekend, which for us... is on the other side of the world and that is Star Wars Celebration. So as you folks may be aware this convention pops up at different areas that usually biannual the last one took place in London they've had them in Orlando they've had them in Anaheim they've had them in I mean Indiana Colorado Chicago this one is in Japan and we have all kinds of stuff to look forward to. And it's a little odd because you have to be patient with the timing. And we have something that we're going to be sharing later in that, for example, a panel that is listed, and most of these panels you can stream online and watch them, are listed, but you have to be careful because the timing is Japanese time. So for example, a Friday morning panel for The Mandalorian and Grogu, the next Star Wars film that people I think are going to be really excited to see is actually at 9 p.m. 10 p.m. Eastern. So that'd be 6 o'clock Pacific tomorrow night. So you're going to have people coming in Friday morning going, I'm going to watch this panel and then find out it was the night before. So we're trying to make sure that people realize, check your time zone. So we'll discuss it the the main panels that I see streaming the Mandalorian and Brogu with Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau Light and Magic on Friday stories from a galaxy far far away and Andor where they preview the upcoming season Saturday is gonna have a look at what's next for Ahsoka Star Wars Visions volume 3 building the galaxy within Walt Disney imaginary, kind of makes you wonder if they might announce the new Star Wars project. It says that it's here directly from the minds behind Star Wars projects and attractions and of course, you know, the other stuff. So, the other stuff is what we're going to talk about. Justin, why don't you start us off? What are you hoping to hear? What are you expecting to hear? Yeah, that's a very wide question just because, you know, I actually had to pull up the article, the Wikipedia article, exactly what even is out there as far as projects because, you know, there are things we know about and those are things that I would expect. lot of the things that you already mentioned, you know, maybe I don't know if we're probably not far enough along to get Maybe we get a teaser for Mandalorian and Grogu. I'm not sure, but it is a little ways I think we might. They did show footage in the past. Yeah, that's an interesting one because it is in status post-production, but its release date is still a ways out. still over a year. Yeah, exactly. We're still over a year away. Typically, movies have a tighter, I should say, tighter... run in marketing so usually you don't get your first teaser that far out but it's definitely possible especially if it's in post-production. We still don't have dates for the other kind of more set in stone films that are being worked on a Jedi Order film by Charmene Aboid-Chenoy, a Don of the Jedi film by James Mangold, and a New Republic film by Dave Filoni. those are not to mention the Sean Levy one which is apparently had Ryan Gosling's name attached to it now. Right. Well that's kind of getting into those are the ones that the ones I just talked about are the ones that are more set in stone. Those are status pre-production. So work has really started on them or or the James Mangold one is set as in development. There's many other projects that have been Kind of... They've been announced, they've been talked about, and have had recent-ish updates within the last year or two. But their status is very nebulous. you have a Rian Johnson trilogy that seems to have been put on the back burner. We have a David Benioff and D.B. Weiss trilogy that also seems to have been kind of forgotten about. The ones that are a little more clear, there's a Taika Waititi film that as of 2023 that's supposedly still in development, a Rose Squadron film by Patty Jenkins, which is also as of 2024, script work is still being done on it. A JD Dillard film, but that one's also kind of on the back burner. And then as you mentioned, John Levy film, which also has gotten talked about. within the last couple years. So, oh, and then another one, a trilogy by Simon Kinberg, which also has been talked about as of 2024. there's quite a few projects that I think this would, you know, I'm always looking for more clarity. So I think, you know, what would be very Surprising I think and also very welcome would be kind of an update across the board of what is going on with each of these projects and maybe we can get some clarity as to which ones are actually going through and which ones you know might be just kind of like ideas that have might be explored sometime in the future. I think that's really the main thing that would be a pretty big surprise but also you know what would give us uh... you know really clear kind of outline of of what to expect for the next couple years star wars and uh... michael your take please yeah think you guys have kind of covered everything justin in particular uh... covered quite a quite a bit of the uh... upcoming movies and and shows that we can expect uh... obviously more about and or season two i would expect that might be able to see the uh... you the first episode of that particular show. I mean, obviously that's a pretty exciting one. think that was one of the more, kind of the sleeper hits that people don't really know what to expect when it came out the first season. And it really took off and actually I'm glad that we're getting to see a second season of that. Looking at some of the panels that are showing, obviously Hasbro's gonna have a panel where they're gonna talk about the black series figures. some of the toys that go along with it. That's always kind of interesting to see which figures are slated for the next release. We also get to see some of the classic retro series. Those have been kind of doing fairly well over the past several years. So it's always kind of good to see some of the other things in the Star Wars universe besides the games and the movies and the shows. But obviously, There's been so much that has been announced that we haven't really seen that I think any of that, any of the above would be really good opportunity to kind of showcase some of those things. So yeah, I'm pretty excited to just to kind of see where, you know, what is announced at the show and what kinds of things we can expect to see. I think it's interesting too, because there are a couple of things that I know about and one I can't say. I had to basically not say a word until another week or so. But I think let's just say it's something you mentioned and I think it's a very good bet. The other thing is we knew about this. There was a leak and they had to come forward and say, you know what, we're going to go ahead and we are going to be doing this. And that is the Star Wars game. We knew it was a real time strategy game, but the other day we got a logo. We got the name Star Wars Zero Company. And basically we were told that you will recruit an unconventional team of operatives and deploy them on missions unlike any other in the galaxy far, far away. It's a single player turn based tactics game by Bit Reactor in collaboration with Respawn. on LucasFilms games. The first details will be shared during the Star Wars Celebration Panel on this weekend. So, Michael, what do you think? Do you think a single-player real-time strategy game could work? And, you know, I hate to be this person, but whenever I hear single-player strategy, I'm here at all kinds of... loot boxes and paid cosmetics and paid characters. What do you think? Well, mean, XCOM and XCOM 2 have been really popular. Tactics based. They're more turn based real time strategy games. But, you know, those obviously were, I believe, single player only and those were very popular and did very well. I would assume, obviously, it sounds very much squad based. Which is what I'm actually really excited about because you know, I still would personally like to see a base building real-time strategy game that's in the vein of you know, the you know Starcraft and that sort of thing but built the center in the Star Wars universe It's been a long time since we've had anything like that as far as like a multiplayer is concerned But from a single-player perspective again if we're in the vein of like XCOM or XCOM 2 Where it's very tactical based I think that can work really well because it can actually have a story that goes along with it. It doesn't necessarily have have loot crates or anything like that. In fact, I that's probably more indicative of a multiplayer game than it would be a single player game. But again, I'm really kind of curious to see what this tends to be. again, I'm a bigger RTS fan. I've always liked that genre. I like the idea that it's small. tactics based game on top of that and I'm You know, I tend to play single-player games more than anything else So anytime there's a single-player only game that tends to pique my interest a lot more than any of the you know Various multiplayer games that are out there. So I'm actually I all what I've heard about it is pretty Positive now, albeit, you know, we haven't heard much other than we know the title We kind of understand the premise and we know that single-player game But I think all those things kind of work in its favor. You know, again, you can even tie it back to something like a Baldur's Gate 3 if you're talking about it from a, RTS perspective. RPG obviously set in different vein of, you know, was fantasy versus science fiction. But again, those have been proven to be pretty popular over the past couple years and have had some of the best stories to go with them. So that's what I'm kind of hoping is that we were kind of... in that same genre when we're talking about this game. Okay, and Justin, your take, please. Yeah, I 100 % agree. think that's really the angle they're going for is an XCOM 2. XCOM 2 sold in the millions of copies. So I think it certainly has its niche and that genre... doesn't have it's patty much more research and obviously the being those kind of tactics are our pg years tactics uh... turn-based games of uh... uh... kinda went by the wayside for a long time but really kind of look at the the gaming landscape there's been a resurgence of different uh... genres uh... that are are kinda very specialized in that way uh... and that this did can definitely work i mean especially for uh... you might not be looking at the budget of say like uh... a jedi fall order anything but it doesn't need to be it needs to just be a very solid uh... tactics based uh... uh... turn based strategy game uh... where a lot of the death wall you know ultimately everything i'll be looking for is a lot of the depth in those kinds of games is the the management outside of combat i mean combat is uh... definitely huge part of it but uh... that the appeal of x com or uh... even uh... and this was maybe a slightly different just cuz it's it was very unique in in a different way but kind of in the same vein aliens dark descent also very much of that uh... okay you do your missions you go back to some kind of base and you manage your uh... whatever it is on x com as you're managing an agency uh... in uh... dark descent you're managing a ship with colonial but uh... squads of colonial marines so i think that'll be thing i'll be looking for is what kind of uh... overarching structure in between missions is kind of uh... you know what what are you managing are you managing squads of uh... of uh... it's kind of hard to tell exactly what uh... where in where in the uh... timeline this is set but you can kind of tell from the uh... the one piece of art we have so far that of course will We will have Jedi. We have one character that has a lightsaber, but it looks like there's also clones maybe, clone troopers in the squad as well. So maybe you have a lot of different options for creating different squads of different classes and building up those characters. So I definitely think this could work. Again, as Michael said, this is a genre that can definitely work really well. XCOM did extremely well. or even like a Baldur's Gate 3 which kind of showed that you can have a very, what would maybe in some regards be considered a very niche genre, but it does extremely well because it does that genre very well. So I'm curious to see how it plays and what timeline it's set in, what it's about, and kind of what structure it takes in between the missions. It will be interesting to find out if they do anything else. We know there's another Jedi Fallen Order game coming, the last one in the series. It'll be very interesting to see if they say, hey, know, this one's coming too, so keep an eye out for that. So we'll be curious because there's just a lot of stuff out there to get excited over. So switching gears, I wanted to talk about something. This came across my desk today. I knew about it, but now I have the details. we had CinemaCon a few weeks ago. Lots of good stuff coming out. Got a lot of first look at trailers for movies big and small. But as we've talked about, unless you work for the movie industry or are a film reviewer, they tend not to, you don't get into this thing. And you know i have people all the time why didn't you capture the video why didn't you do this because it's illegal you cannot videotape the things are secure ok go ahead and do it well i'm not going to get in trouble with the studios legal department and lose you know all the nonsense that you here from people who don't understand uh... you know that penalties stuff what we do well one of the things that is being done is part of national cinema week you remember in the past they've done discounted concessions they've done discounted movies I remember, oh, what was it? had Barbie got to see it for like $3 a few years back. Cinema United in partnership with various companies ranging from Fandango to Coca-Cola. Before I go into that, gentlemen, I do want to mention they had told us at CinemaCon and I did not get to this last time out and I really wanted to bring this up. Apparently, Fandango is going to be offering a service that when you buy your tickets online, that you will have the option to do micro transactions and round up your total to the nearest dollar, that money is going to be used to take needy children and get them to the cinemas. And I thought that was really cool because their whole thing was there's all these children out there that can't afford to go to the movies that aren't going to the movies. We want to make that happen. And they essentially were saying, look, we need to make sure the next generation of theater goers is set. With that in mind, they are doing Sneak Peek Showcase and the way it's described is the Cinema Foundation's non-profit arm, Cinema United, will host a nearly 70-minute program called Sneak Peek Showcase. It'll be at thousands of screens all over North America on April 22nd and April 24th. Now, this is where it's interesting. It will offer... movie lovers and a preview of the big screen studio movies, including some favorites from the industry insider event, CinemaCon, earlier this month. And it said on Tuesday, April 22nd, Tuesday, April 24th, you will get a look at movies. And that means trailers, never-before-seen footage and clips curated as part of films ranging from PG to rated R. So for example, Tickets are only three bucks and the money's going into charity. I don't know if it's gonna be mainly trailers. I don't know if they're gonna show some of the things like the executive at Paramount doing the motorcycle stunt routine, the dancing Megan dolls, that sort of thing. I can tell you this, I definitely believe where I saw more than 70 minutes worth of trailers while I was there. But as I told somebody on a site, I said, If you want to see the new Predator Badlands trailer, there's a good chance that that might be there. I think they will be focusing on the big major films versus some of the smaller art films. Michael, let's start with you on this one. What do you think of this? No, see, I think this is good because it gives people an opportunity to kind of experience these previews on the big screen where they really should be as opposed to watching on YouTube or... or something like that. get a chance to promote these. get people, again, out there watching them, and the money goes to a good cause. And at the same time, they can kind of do a big showcase. Again, it's not gonna be the same thing as you guys, which everybody sees at CinemaCon. You're not gonna have the star presence. You're not necessarily gonna have all the different previews that are being shown, since a lot of the stuff is either pre-production or early production, but it does give folks a chance to get excited about it again. I like that they're doing this because it does get people that again, that experience when you go to and see these previews on the big screen, whether you're going to see it, know, a movie that's out and you just happen to be there and you can see the previews or in this case where you get to see a lot of these that are going to be coming out. It just kind of gives you that, I guess that incentive or that, or that excitement. to actually go and again, see these movies. So I think it's really cool that they're starting to do this more. gets people excited, gives them that kind of, know, premiere experience of seeing some of these things for the first time before they're even announced. You're not, again, watching the preview on your small, on your tablet or your phone where you're not really engaged with it that you are in the theater. So again, I think it's a good opportunity for, you know, a lot of these movies, and probably a lot of the ones that are gonna be coming out soonish, you know, the ones that are coming out this summer, maybe later on in the year, you know, obviously, you know, an opportunity to see the Wicked, the second, you know, premiere for that, the New Jurassic World movie. Yeah, exactly. again, it's not initially, I think, gonna be a lot of... surprises, but it is a lot of first looks of things that are likely to come out this year. Just in your take, please. No, think that's a lot. Definitely a lot of good points. think, you know, there's always something that sets the theater experience apart. There's that always that, you know, that anticipation of when you go to see a movie and you get to see some of the trailers for things coming out. Yeah, even like I've gotten excited before, like when Dune Part 2. uh... was coming out i went to again when i want to see and i'd already seen the trailer but you know being able to see that trailer again on uh... on larger screen was uh... you know it was it was nice so i think there's definitely something to that that uh... that kind of uh... it kind of gets you a little closer to that what you're talking about with the exclusive uh... exclusivity of it of the i've seen something that you know you can't just go find online like i have to be here at this specific time to see it uh... you to see before everyone else well it of course other than the people that party inside at cinema con or you know the people that are also with with you in that event but uh... that's uh... it's definitely something that's really appealing about that and uh... i think it's a good thing to kind of get people more uh... more engaged with the theaters and getting them into theater seats what i think is interesting about it is that there was somebody who uh... I was the Paramount executive again, and he addressed the theater owners and said basically, here are some things that we need to do to make sure that we have a steady supply of customers. And he talked about promotions, loyalty programs. He talked about the discount movie Tuesdays should be extended to include Wednesdays and such, unless of course it's a film that's a projected sellout or something like that. And one of his ideas was that there should be fewer trailers because, you know, there, guess there are some people that don't like this whole, I got to watch a pre show and then I've got to watch five to six to seven trailers. Now I'm actually the opposite. I really enjoy the trailers because as Michael and you know, when we go to see our press screenings, there generally are not trailers. You go straight into the logo, you know, the sound logos and the theater's logo right into the movie. So when we do go see a movie or so on the weekend, it's kind of nice to be able to say, wow, hey, check that out. You know, I got to see some trailers and what is just so weird about it is... You wonder where the middle ground is gonna be because they like to make a big deal about here's our new trailer, go online and see it. People are getting used to that. I still like seeing them on the big screen. My question about this one is where's the balance at? Because we had all these different studios. Now, I'm looking at it going, I really hope they show people the Running Man trailer. That was really cool. I hope they show Predator Badlands. I hope they show Wicked for Good. and then you go through it. But you have multiple studios and I know that there's gotta be a balance. And then there's a part of me going, I like the new Downton Abbey, but do you wanna spend those two to three to four or five minutes taking up time for that? There's a remake of War of the Roses coming out, just simply called The Roses. Looks absolutely hysterical. But, you know, that I could see being the problem. Are we gonna promote this indie art film? There's a... Channing Tatum film called Roof Man coming out with the big cast. You know, do you do that one or do you say, hey, here's the Megan 2.0 trailer that you haven't seen yet. Here's the Fantastic Four trailer that's going to show you what the Silver Surfer looked like that we got a look at it at the show. So a lot of interesting stuff. And what is going to be really interesting about that is that there's a report that the next trailer for the Fantastic Four First Steps is going to be releasing shortly. Many people know that it's already planned to be tied in with Thunderbolts on Friday, May 1st, but some people think that April 28th, we may see the new trailer. So all of that stuff is really, really interesting as we transition toward, you know, the summer movies. Now. Switching gears, I wanted to take a look at something rather interesting. We have PAX East coming up in June. And of course, we have Summer Game Fest. Now, we have long bemoaned the lack of the major players at the conventions. It's one of the reasons I have curtailed. Michael and I used to go to E3 on a regular basis. I'd go up to PAX West up in Seattle. always got to see what was new from Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, so on and so forth. But in recent years, it's become just all Indies. Well, PAX East, we had talked about with the later time frame, would we see some larger named games? Well, they put out, they being PAX East's PR firm, Readpop, Penny Arcade, set out an updated schedule where Blizzard, 2K games, Wizards of the Coast, Digital Extreme, the Behavior Interactive, or Dead by Daylight, Next Sun with the First Descendant will all be taking place. Now some people have said, well, you know, they're just panels. Like for example, we talked about Killing Floor 3 got a delay, but apparently they're going to be there. Now, Needles to say, a lot of people are excited. Some people are saying, Blizzard may just be doing a panel. They're not going to be doing a floor show. They have their own event down the way. They have, what do you call it? They have BlizzCon coming out later this year. But, you know, 2K Games has got people really excited. They've got two or three really big games, not the least of which is Borderlands 4 in the pipeline. And a lot of people are expecting a Look-See. So... Justin, we'll start with you. Do you think this is a sign that more more companies will be coming? We've also heard that Square Enix is going to be taking part. And do you think they will have a presence on the floor with playable demos? Or is this a dip the toe in the water and we're just going to come and do a few panels and maybe have a pop-up and hand out swag? Yeah, that's a tough question to answer just because as you kind of alluded to, there's just been so much variation to, and I've been to PAX East a few times, there's been a lot of variation to how big PAX East is, and like you mentioned, in more recent years it's definitely gotten much smaller in scale and more indie focused. And to an extent, know, to be fair to PAX in general, it is really a fan event. It is a It was kind of a, it kind of grew in scale a few years after the very first PAX. And I think they started to, the original PAX West got very large and they started to do more PAX. They did PAX East and the PAX South and PAX Australia. And it really kind of ballooned into a pretty big event. Mostly because it was a good way to get fans uh... or you know the regular public uh... access to to things that you probably would only get at three now of course games calm i think is open to the public uh... if i'm not mistaken but that is in europe uh... so i guess so i think uh... packs was a good like fit in a nice niche where uh... you know and i can just speak from my own experience packs was one of those events where it kind of felt like i'm kinda getting a e3 light experience like of course i you know i couldn't i couldn't go to three you you have to get invited you have to be part of the press uh... but it sort of felt like that where you could go to a big convention uh... and uh... you get to you know see some demos that uh... for upcoming games and sometimes pretty big games. A few PAX Easts I went to. I remember Wolfenstein, there's a demo for Wolfenstein. The New Order, I think, was the one I played. Borderlands was there. Tribes of Send was announced there. Battlefield 3 was there, so Battlefield 3 wasn't even out yet. was a very obviously very big game, very highly anticipated game and you could actually go see a live demo of it being played. So it definitely had that kind of vibe, was a very big event where you got to see some things that you maybe you saw it get announced at E3 and then oh here lo and behold I get to see it up close. So that's what the appeal was but as you mentioned it's kind of... fallen more into anything but here's the thing it's like that's really what it was supposed to be i think at the at the beginning of really supposed to be a fan event uh... for people to kind of get together in uh... about these you know these specific interests uh... uh... tabletop gaming uh... you know tournaments uh... you know and and panels i think was a lot of the huge part of it so uh... But certainly another huge component is also what you mentioned with Summer Games Fest kind of coming out at the same time and just in general conventions not being the place where there's as big reveals anymore with a lot of companies instead going towards live streamed events. So all that aside, what to expect with this packs? Certainly a lot of big names, but I could see it going either way where... you know potentially we see some big things uh... i think borderlands is a pretty safe that we've seen borderlands at many taxes before uh... randy pitchford really likes packs very friendly to taxes and events so borderlands being there totally makes sense i think that's a slam dunk but these other ones are the are they bringing new games are they bringing all games are they doing panels it's really hard to say I think though this would be the one to look at for how the future might look with that different sort of time slot maybe because I, it's a point I try to bring up a lot where really it comes down to timing. So what makes sense? So if they, if they announce some games earlier in the summer and you have a convention event like PAX a little bit later in the summer or early fall, you can kind of bring maybe some demos or some new trailers. uh... as part of your your marketing so uh... this would be the one to watch maybe we get to see some some bigger things but uh... what to call it and see and uh... michael what do you think yeah i agree with borderlands i think that would be that pretty pretty huge particularly if there's some hands-on uh... demo of borderlands 4 obviously when we at CES when borderlands 3 came out you remember we had an opportunity to play through part of the first mission, right? So that was, and that was, think, still a couple of years before it released, at least a year before it released. At least a year, yeah. Yeah. So, you know, I would think that's a pretty good bet. And again, that would be huge in that they would really, I think this would be really the first hands-on show that would be open to the public and could get people really excited again, even if it's only a demo or the first level or a mission or something like that to get, you know, to get the fans really excited for it. Not that they necessarily need to be because Borderlands 4 should be huge, but it would be a good opportunity to get some fan feedback on it, some first impressions, that sort of thing. And then again, it would be really good at, you know, being a fan event. I think obviously there will be, there's still going to be a big focus, I think, on Indies and the fan side of it. It's certainly not going to be an E3 type of an event, at least not in the vein of where E3 used to be, where it was a lot of huge announcements, a lot of first impressions, a lot of hands-on, a lot of that sort of thing. So I think it will still be pretty toned down, I guess, trying to compare it an E3 experience. But I think that it does give us an opportunity to see what the future of PAX holds, as Justin was saying. Are they going to keep it a, depending on how it goes, might drive a lot of the larger industry players to show up too. So I think it's a good thing to watch for the Tiago's. Yeah, absolutely. Really quick, just some interesting new stuff I wanted to throw out there. Jurassic Park franchise alum Sam Neill apparently is going to go after a different set of giant creatures as he's apparently going into the new Godzilla Kong film and No word yet on what he's playing other than a new human. So that that's a great description and You know, we're getting some Avengers news or ramping up with that. We should have some more stuff very very soon, but Quietly in the mix we got an email today. Knott's Berry Farm wanted us to all know it's time to dust off your swimsuit as guess what? Soak City is opening May 17th through September 7th on select dates and you know, that's not that far off and You know 15 acres water slides the whole idea We had a heat wave here in Arizona the last few days were it actually got up to 100 degrees on a couple of days earlier than it normally hits 100 degrees. Then it got in the 90s and thankfully it's cooled off into the high 80s so we have a little more time before we get blasted. But the idea of swimming pool and the water slides is definitely really, really interesting. So everybody, Star Wars celebration. Cinema United tickets are available online. We have them here on the website. Proceeds go to charity. and lots of good stuff at PAX East. I think that is gonna do it for this week. Everybody be safe, take care, and we will talk to you all next week. Until then, have a great one.
