# Top 5 [ Oct 21, 2020 ] *INTRO* What’s up everybody! Welcome to another episode of the Top 5 @ 5 with your host Jonni Kuest. Today is [ Wednesday Oct 21 ]. Here’s what you missed while you were procrastinating work and watching champions league matches all morning: 1. Purdue 1. After a long lawsuit, the makers of OxyContin, Purdue Pharma has finally agreed to plead guilty to federal criminal charges. They’re getting hit with an $8Bn charge which will go towards opioid treatment programs. They’re also paying an additional 3.5Bn fine, forfeiting 2Bn in profits and shutting the company down. Since they dont actually have 8Bn. They’ll sell what they do have as assets and create a new quote unquote public benefit company. That company will still make and sell OxyContin, but profits go towards opioid treatment programs. The sackler family that used to own Purdue pharma settled with a 225M civil payment, although they might still face criminal charges. Quote The company, which filed for bankruptcy in 2019, pleaded guilty to violating federal anti-kickback laws, as it paid doctors ostensibly to write more opioid prescriptions. Abuse of prescription painkillers is a major cause of the nation's opioid crisis. Although the more than $8 billion in fines and penalties in the agreement is a record to be paid by a pharmaceutical company, it is only a fraction of what it has cost federal, state and local governments to combat the opioid crisis. States across the country have filed claims topping $2 trillion in the Purdue Pharma bankruptcy case. End quote. So what do you think here? Was this a fair enough deal? Should the government even be in the business of selling people Oxy? Is their argument of legitimate uses for Oxy valid? Let me know your thoughts. Shoot me a message. 2. Francis 1. This pope is really tryna go down in history as the chillest of all the popes. I wonder if the super conservative cardinals regret their decision. My guy first said the words in 2013: who am I to judge, when he was asked during a news conference about a reportedly gay priest in Brazil. And that sparked some stirrings. But yesterday, during the premiere of a new documentary about his life, he took the extra brave step and endorsed same sex civil unions. Quote "Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God," Francis said in one of his sit-down interviews for the film. "You can't kick someone out of a family, nor make their life miserable for this. What we have to have is a civil union law; that way they are legally covered." The Jesuit priest who has been at the forefront in seeking to build bridges with gay people in the church, the Rev. James Martin, praised the pope's comments as "a major step forward in the church's support for LGBT people." "The Pope's speaking positively about civil unions also sends a strong message to places where the church has opposed such laws," Martin said in a statement. End quote. Absolutely does. My guy has denounced climate change deniers. He embraces the Big Bang theory and evolution. He speaks out against ethnic cleansing when others won’t. He doesnt rock gold and fancy gear. He’s definitely been the most chill pope. it’s cuz he’s jesuit. The Jesuit priests are always the cool ones. Now take a bigger stance and responsibility for what the priests did to all them boys for decades and you win the big prize. 3. Hummer 1. You remember hum-douches. The d-bags that would drive those obnoxiously large hummers, built the desserts of Iraq and off-terrain— slightly modified to drive down and command suburban streets all while getting about 8-10 MPG and spending 100$ in gas per tank. Oh, and spending about 80-100k on the truck itself. Back in the early 2000s when money was worth money. Well, its baaaaaaaaack. Except! She’s electric. Boogie woogiewoogie. That’s right. An all electric Hummer Supertruck. Ready to take on Tesla from America’s hometown brand, General Motors. 1,000 horsepower. 350mi range on one charge with fast charging. It has all the off-reading capabilities of it’s dinosaur guzzling older brothers, like crab walking mode and adjustable air suspension to get an addition 6” of clearance. But this one sips electrons instead. Now the price part hasn’t changed. Prices range from 79k up to 112 thousand for the super off-roading capable one. But all of them get 350mi range. It’s still super large. Has a pickup bed in the rear, removable t-tops, and, a front trunk. It has this 18 camera system called ultra vision, which gives you a full surrounding view of the vehicle. And they partnered with Epic Games, who makes the Unreal Engine and Fortnite to design the in-car infotainment system. The graphics are unreal. Btw, they sold out of pre-orders in 10minutes. Expect to start to see these on the streets late next year. 4. Live Stream Photoshop 1. Live streaming is all the rage, whether you’re watching or creating, playing games or giving live cooking demos, the live stream market is starting to take over online video views. One area people have been asking for is more content creators to live stream their process. And today, Photoshop is enabling that. Adobe is now letting you live stream your Photoshop and illustrator work from your iPad to the world. And to watch other streamers, you dont need a special app. That same app you stream with, you consume on. Just open the Photoshop or illustrator app, go to the Discover tab and you can find live streaming creators, showing you their process. For now this is only available on iPad, but there is a limited beta for the desktop version that you can apply for. 5. American MiGs 1. I thought this was an interesting story and worth a read of the full article as well as the full interview. What I’m talking about is a retired American F-15 pilot that gave up some details in an interview about flying some top secret jets. Well. They weren’t really top secret, just so much as they weren’t American jets. Yea. Check this out, apparently, during the Cold War in the 1960s, quote the U.S. intelligence community went on a top-secret shopping spree. The CIA purchased or leased Soviet fighter jets from a number of countries, often acquired through pilot defections, captures, or even from the Soviet Union itself. The Soviet planes were then passed on to the U.S. Air Force, which translated instruction manuals (if any) and had some of its best pilots fly the unfamiliar aircraft. The haul included MiG fighter jets collected from countries such as Israel, China, Egypt, and Indonesia. End quote. Yea. That’s right. We had the enemy planes and had our own pilots testing them out and flying against our own planes in combat training, ya know, just in case WW3 ever really happened. The program was called Constant Peg and it just fascinates me how they were able to pull this off. Full story in the show notes. It’s definitely a great popular mechanics read on aviation . *OUTRO* Well my beautiful people, those are my Top 5 news stories of the day. *Amtrak. Quibi. Vax Volunteer*.
